This party is over.

An Antoine Griezamann brace sealed Ireland’s fate this afternoon in Lyon.

A great start for Ireland with a converted Robbie Brady penalty, the one goal lead was wiped out in a 15 minute French blitz, aided by some piddle-poor defending by Ireland in the second half.

Au revoir les Paddies.

Final score: France 2 Ireland 1

UEFA Euro 2016

I haven’t been so entertained watching football since Saipant, thanks to the lads for working their asses off

Very enjoyable. ups and downs of the 4 games. However ALL goals conceded in the tournament however were as a result of defensive errors.

which would never have occurred if the goalline referee who was 10ft from the french head that deflected the ball out for an un-awarded corner kick moments before the second french goal

      robbed twice.

It must be awful to have the life ambition of bring seen as a poor mans Roy Keane by Internet strangers.

They did quite well all things considered, the first half today saw some proper nifty football. I hope the fans in Paris have a great night.

  4. Frilly Keane

    A super campaign
    Nonetheless

    Brady’s goal was savage
And that peno today was as good ( and crafty) as any ye’ll ever see

Problem with that? Get a grip. The lads did us proud and we should be glad to fly out colours in support of them. Great couple of weeks. Fair play to the Irish team and the Irish fans.

Admittedly it was much funnier when it was originally posted, at half-time,

I could rant and rant about all the fine margins we let slip through our hands that we could have controlled and I don’t mind people complaining or bemoaning any of the many obvious failings but there’s a time and a place best suited and this thread is not it…..

I am so happy and proud for the team, absolutely massive improvement from last time we had a go at this under Trapattoni.

We should have beaten Sweden, we knew we made a total mess of Belgium(Who beat a very capable young Hungry side 4-0 btw), we did the business and earned a great win against the B team of the best defensive system in the world. To top it all off we ran the host nation, a very talented side(joint favourites)ragged with frustration for 60 mins. A little more skill and a lot less bias and advantages to France(those 3-4 days extra rest would have made a huge difference) and we could have been worthy winners.

Most of all the errors, mistakes and failings were well known and acknowledged by the players themselves.
More often than not we were disappointed because we could or should have got a better result and refreshingly, we did not rely on luck like the old days and we didn’t get any of it or moan that we didn’t either

The Martin O’Neill / Roy Keane good cop / bad lieutenant setup is a great fit. It’s never going to be perfect and I can’t realistically imagine a better combination we could find anytime soon. A lot of credit should be given to them for trying to be dynamic and taking risks with unpopular decisions. If you don’t try something new and risk failure you can’t learn and improve faster for the future. Mistakes will always be made and people always know what you should have done anyway.

Some of the younger and less experienced players really have grown up and taken the mantle from the auld guard and the future looks bright again after a long period of problems. Check out Bonner and Cunningham talking about it on the highlights show on the RTE player.

Random thought : Why does Irish football only seem to thrive in a recession and what can we do to create the right conditions for a better supply of higher skill competitive players… one to chew on I suppose…?

Great to see Brady, Hendrick, McClean form a strong attacking midfield partnership.

In spite of his age and the lack of game time I was so glad to see Hoolahan finally get a chance to shine after being exiled and ignored for so long…

James McCarthy is and was a lot better than he will be given credit for….
& Thanks Dunphy, ye bleedin b-o-l-l-1-X !! for making a name off of exaggerating the bloody obvious…

Great tournament for Ireland north and south, we are now around the 12th best International team in Europe compared 30th or whatever before.

The fans taught a lot of people how it can be done too…..

I could go on and on even more….

I’d say that match could be the making of the french, even with the side of the draw that they are on they could win it.

    1. :-Joe

Only Italy can make it past Germany on that side of the group.

Sorry to all the other supporters of other teams and to end all your dreams.. etc.

Think how good our football team could be if we didn’t squander so much time and energy on GAA?

    1. ALisonT

Its only squandered if you think the money and corporate sponsorship in Soccer is more important than having hundreds of thousands of kids and adults taking part in community sports every weekend. Perhaps they would be better off watching sport on TV so the nation could get all worked up about reaching the same stage of the Euro Campaign as we did in Poland – Last 16.

    2. :-Joe

If you want “soccer” football to be better in Ireland buy a season ticket at your local club or whatever top two clubs you prefer.

If you’re really into it then you can get more involved and have a chance to influence management of that club as a loyal supporter.

Otherwise, lobby the sports minister or help people set up mini-leagues and cups for kids or just turn off the PC / Playstation for a few hours and kick your kids out of the house with a football two or three times a week.

Great soccer players are born from economically underprivileged young kids.
