does anyone else find the headline of the Irish Times Weekend rather insensitive/skewed?
I mean, in 2015 alone 102 unarmed African Americans were killed by US police. http://mappingpoliceviolence.org/unarmed/
I may stand to be corrected, but I don’t remember the Irish Times framing that shocking statistic as the US nation being shaken by profound grief?
It seems like a distant memory now the outrage sparked by the Rodney King video incident. Just another daily occurance these days in the US
Deluded
I see your point but I’m not sure how it could be worded to reflect the gunman’s statements while not appearing sympathetic to his actions.
I had a look back to how we reported the Charleston shootings with regards to racial motivation: https://www.broadsheet.ie/2015/06/18/de-friday-papers-113/
(As I recall Fox News and others saw Charleston as an attack on Christians)

@Deluded my point about the headline was really about the part “US shaken by profound grief” which to me seems culturally insensitive. I don’t recall any similar headings implying that the US as a nation being shaken by profound grief after the numerous stories of unjustified use of lethal force by US police against it’s ethnic minorities
Deluded
Yes, I misread your point. Certain tragedies are seen to cause anguish in particular communities but others are a national matter.
@Twunt I think it’s important to also take into account the ethnic ratios in the US when considering that infographic. ie. that whites make up about 64% of the population, blacks about 12%, hispanic about 16%

“Micah X” – like Malcom X, geddit? The Sun, unsurprisingly goes with the same spin on the name that the online racists did. Dude’s surname is Johnson.

They seem to be altering their behaviour, quite rapidly, and becoming more “urbanised”, maybe its something to do with the amount of food available on the streets nowadays. Not that I’d want to appear a seagullphobe.

It is good to see the Daily Mail dealing with the big story, the one that the other papers wouldn’t touch.

A wonderful legacy for America’s first “post racial” president to leave behind.

What a moronic statement.

it is. “post-racial” is a moniker that was foisted onto him, not one he ever claimed. his real legacy is that his terms were for the most part bush’s 3rd and 4th terms.

@Sido – Yeah, I expect a President of the 50 states to change a gun culture and race relations that have evolved over hundreds of years, in his two terms. With the Republicans being so supportive, with each of the 50 states having their own laws, police forces and judicial systems, he could only succeed.

I see the local papers for local people are focussing on local issues.Their vision of themselves should inspire the resurgent empire.

Examiner: Bizarre stuff between FF and FG. FF don’t want a leadership contest in FG because Kenny improves FF’s chances. The first time I have ever seen the ‘opposition’ propping up a Taoiseach while his own party want him gone.

ugh, how an papers say that the shooter was racist? you CANNOT be racist towards whites, racism = privilege + power, this shooter is just lashing out against racist power structures that keep african americans oppressed, we need to be more understanding towards the REAL victims of this, the african american community.

nonsense.you can’t just redefine words to suit a point of view .

#blacklivesmatter equals #whitelivesmatter
#killallwhitepeople equals #killallblackpeople
They are the exact opposites.

I think you mean racial supremacism. Base racism is neutral of power.
