When did Irish maps start using “Derry/Londonderry”?
It is the City of Derry.

It’s the wierdest thing in the world. In every semi-official missive, it’s known as Derry/Londonderry by local officaldom. Something to do with the GFA i assume. Maybe a local can throw more light on it.

A friend worked for amnesty and was based there and was driven demented by having to call it Derry/Londonderry constantly

        It’s one of those things.

We used to call it Derry & the British called it Londonderry.

Now that we are keen on being tolerant & open, we call it Derry/Londonderry and the British call it Londonderry.

People leaving North / West & going East.
Lots of empty houses in North / West, housing crises in east.

No broadband in North / West.

Maybe if we had briadband in North / West, people might want to staty there?

Over 200K empty houses is obscence. Really needs to have a use it oe lose it policy.

        Empty houses in general.
I know there are holiday homes that are only partially occupied part of the year or houses that are stuck in probate after some one dies, or houses undergoing rennovations & not not habitable.
But if a house has been effectively abandoned, left to the elements for a period of time ( 5, 15, 20 years?) then there could be a mechanism to CPO or possess it.

Before people get all anxious about sacred property rights, they are subject to “the principles of social justice”, and in accordance with laws passed reconciling the right “with the exigencies of the common good” (Article 43).

Not much point in CPOing thousands of houses in the North and the West if no one (who needs to be housed by the state) wants to live there. By CPOing you’d probably be doing some owners a favor as they can’t sell them.

As for the “social justice” & “common good” argument – they’re both tempered by the requirement for the acquiring body to justify there are no alternative options available.

As for sites in Dublin, the LAs would be hard pressed to argue that there are no alternative sites or alternative actions available to them – plenty of undeveloped LA or state land available and the LA’s own planning restrictions (limits on height & amenity/transport restrictions) could easily be argued as an alternative action they could take.

Jumping for a CPO solution instead of fixing the problems with the LAs & how social housing is generated in Ireland is a bad move.

Half of the people on Dublin’s housing list are older single people. Perhaps given the choice of moving to another part of th country, they might take it?

If a house is already build & is suitable, would it not be faster for an LA to acquire it that building their own?

I agree, there is plenty of derelcit land, service sites in cities that could be re-used by LAs but not. Have no idea why.

Interesting re the difference between the change in number of households relative to the change in population.

I guess the first being larger than the second indicates a large proportion of young professionals relative to older couples & families.

Might *finally* see a push towards different types and configurations of housing. Last thing I want at the moment is a generic three-bed semi-d in the endless suburbs.

  4. CousinJack

Lots of empty houses where people don’t want to live (except for a few weeks in the summer)

  5. Truth in the News

The CSO did’nt say much about the non national population figures
Stroke City defnition of Derry seems to indicate that the production of
the data was outsourced, to who, in relation to the North their next census is
2021 which will bring into question the status of the North and indeed Derry
By 2031 who will be the majority group in the North….how much longer will the
3 Kingdoms last….”the times they are a changing”
