The legal requirement is 4 years of separation, not 5.

When are we going to see reports of same-sex couple separation and other family law issues reported in the Irish Times, btw?

The 4 out of 5 years separation before divorce rule is in the constitution, so it will take a referendum to remove it. Don’t expect an improvement on this any time soon!

Irish Divorce laws are ridiculous…. people have to have lived apart for four out of the last five years before they can have closure. This has to be revisited.

Are you suggesting we stop punishing heretics and fornicators?

      That way likes ANARCHY.

A FG TD (can’t remember her name but she works in family law) was starting to get the ball rolling on reducing it to two years recently – she was on The Last Word talking about it and of course they had to have Breda O’Brien on for ‘balance’ talking about ‘the poor kids’.

In fairness though, a wait of 52 weeks in Tullamore and Dundalk for a brother and sister to legally part the ways would be worth it for the sake of the children.
