Spotted this touching and timely tribute to Sister Act (1992) as the local police station’s effort in this year’s Scarecrow Festival [Until August 1]. We weren’t sure how to feel about it. I said I know how to find out how we should feel about it…

Fight/straw nun argument!

It might also be a tribute to the 1990 Eric Idle and Robbie Coltrane film ‘Nuns on the Run’. That looks like Robbie Coltrane standing next to Whoopi there.

Or you could develop your own opinions by informing yourself using a broad range of sources and experiences.

Or you could take the line you quoted as a light-hearted jab at the tortuous blackface debates that always blow up here! Your choice!

No, all are equally creepy. How else are you to make a coloured scarecrow? Wouldn’t it be racist to make white only ones?

Bright red lips on pitch black faces is not how ‘coloured’ people look – it’s what every stereotypically racist depiction of black people looks like.

Unfortunately people still deliberately choose not to see the bleedin’ obvious

out of curiousity , if it were a shade of dark pink lips would that fix it?

The white skin tones aren’t exactly realistic either like. Is simply having ‘a black one’ racist?

What if a garda had based the figure on a golliwog he’d had in his youth – but he actually really really loved that golliwog. And he even used call it Whoopi.

        What then you monsters.

What if the representation was made to look more like Whoopi Goldberg, brown face and not mad red lips.

But then it was quoted making very iffy statements about rape.

        Food for thought.

Should point out that while it was on the police station’s premises there was nothing to say that it was the Gardai’s handiwork.

Does the Durrow Scarecrow Festival culminate in a male virgin being burnt alive in a Wickerman?

i saw this last year, the sister act nuns were propped up near the wrestling arena. which was great. it was all great. i forgot about it this year, genuinely wanted to make a weekend of it and go down with a camper van and a few pals. some nice pubs there, i think it would be class craic.
