If you haven’t got your pic with the @MaserArt #RepealThe8th mural @projectarts yet, hurry up.. it’s coming down at 12

Anyone?
Meanwhile….
Hot Press reports:
This week, a mural on the wall of the Project Arts Centre in Temple Bar, with the slogan ‘Repeal the 8th’ has attracted some controversy.
The artwork, offending or otherwise, was commissioned by ‘Hunreal Issues’, a new website that aims to share women’s issues with a wider audience and painted by renowned urban artist Maser.
It is not the first mural to appear outside the Centre, but it is definitely the most controversial. Its predecessor was a big ‘YES’ mural to honour the marriage referendum, which curiously didn’t receive any complaints.
This highlights how incredibly divisive the issue of abortion can be – at least for some.
According to Project Arts Artistic Director Cian O’Brien, the centre has received 50 complaints, but it has also attracted over 200 messages of support.

UPDATE:
Project Arts Centre this afternoon.
The Project Arts Centre has released the following statement:
We have taken the decision to remove the mural artwork by celebrated street artist, Maser, painted on the front of our building, after receiving a warning notice from Dublin City Council Planning Department that the work is in violation of the Planning & Development Acts (2000-2015).
Commenting on the artwork, Project Arts Centre Artistic Director, Cian O’Brien, said:
“We have had an astonishing response to this artwork by Maser and I want to thank everyone who has contributed to the conversation around this important topic. I, in no way, wish to censor or silence an artist; I respect the legal position that the DCC Planning Office is in and the parameters within which they are working. This artwork occurs in the context of many in the artistic programme.”
“It is the first time Project has been presented with a planning notice for a painted artwork on the front of our current building. Project Arts Centre is complying with the planning notice and has removed this artwork. We look forward to working through official channels with Maser and The HunReal Issues to explore the possibility of re-installing this work as soon as possible.”

Ah here.
By Alan Nolan
Take it down. Complete waste of space à la the usual Irish Times OpEd/RTE/Labour muffia suspects.
Leave it up. Excellent use of space.
So 4:1 in favour, but it’s coming down because that 1 are a bunch of religious extremist nutters paid from the US to lobby on a professional basis.
This is why we can’t have nice things.
“Nutters” says the guy behind guns.ie… nutters?
Yup, nutters.
(Also, cheers for the olympic-target-shooting-equals-gun-nut thing, never heard that before)
Is it coming down because of complaints, DCC planning or because it’ll attract more attention taking it down rather than leaving it up there to grow old?
I’d genuinely like to know.
Ah. I see the update now.
that space is usually used to advertise upcoming shows being performed in Project so it could be that, big show en route organised poster space.
ninja update proved me wrong.
It’s coming down because some old fogey named Alan complained.
Repealing the 8th is so hot right now
Ohhhh and it’s about to get a whole lot hotter for AW 16’….tomorrow on Expose
expose?
Soz Xposé
I’m 100% pro repealing the 8th but the lefty dublin types getting involved are nauseating ……..
Translation:
“I don’t mind abortion so long as they don’t get too uppity and I have to hear about it while having my dinner in the middle of the day”.
The voice in your head is doing regressive translations…. weird….
Hi, justinnews or whatever name you are choosing today.
Heh! Stop that.
yup
Like Vogue Williams?
Repeal the hate.
+100
I see what you just did
While I’m pro-choice there is something deeply disturbing about a big bubbly happy friendly heart logo promoting abortion. It’s serious business. This kind of STUNNING insensitivity isn’t going to help. To me, this makes the people who put this logo up look like they have no idea what is actually involved in an abortion.
What is involved in an abortion?
It’s bold, striking and colourful but I would not have said bubbly or happy. It’s strong and assertive without being dour or aggressive. I’d say it captures the spirit of the repeal movement very well.
“I would not have said bubbly or happy.” serious mental gymnastics going on there…..
Really? Maybe on first impression, but on examination, it doesn’t treat the subject trivially, which is what seems to be implied by ‘bubbly and happy. Seems more like an elegant evocation of the love and life that are driving the movement.
“….more like an elegant evocation of the love and life that are driving the movement”
Did some flower waving hippy pitch a tent up your hoop or what… that’s nonsense Nigel.
Anger at injustice drives the movement more than anything FFS.
How could anyone give a damn about injustice if they weren’t driven by love and life? To be angry about something you have to have a heart and feelings and care about things. Damn right I’m a goddamn hippy. I love you, Clamps.
Jaysus Nigel, you’re a gas man :)
Thanks,Clamps.
Happy Heart logo used for Irish Heart foundation too!
http://www.irishheart.ie/iopen24/happy-heart-appeal-t-10_1493.html
How dare they! Have they no idea what is actually involved in a heart attack?
Heart attacks are serious. Having a happy heart logo with people who have or have had survived heart attacks is insensitive. People have died from heart attacks.
Abortion is a medical reality affecting 1 in 10 Irish women. #Repleasethe8th.
Thats about having a healthy heart…. totally different message, branding 101….. again super troll level mental gymnastics going on here.
My point is that its a medical issue affecting women. We can’t even have a discussion about it with doctors in this country.
human doesn’t realise the labial connotations of heart shapes lol
Human is very much against giving his brain a workout.
it’s called art, go look it up in between fish dinners.
It’s not promoting abortion, it’s promoting the repealing of the eighth.
+infinity
“Concern troll.”
is it being taken down because Maser still insists on using Bello Pro?
What’s involved is the destruction of an organism that will be a human. It’s poor taste making a trendy logo for something like that.
What is currently involved is that women’s medical needs are not being discussed or met in this country.
Long overdue that it goes #Repealthe8th
Pro choice if the ladies are deserving and sad enough for me to feel like they really made the right decision but understand the gravity of what I think the situation is?
Why should anyone else have any say in someone else’s medical treatment?
If a smoker develops lung cancer, is it up to anyone else to decide if they deserve treatment?
Its a medical issue between a women, her doctor any anyone else she chooses to bring into the conversation.
Opinions from complete strangers don’t matter, they don’t have to live with consequences. #Repealthe8th
Flippin’ smokers with their self-inflicted lung cancer getting chemo on demand!! There are no organisations stopping them from getting medical treatment. But we mustn’t let women have total control over their own bodies because they can’t be trusted not to do something someone completely unconnected to their lives doesn’t like.
The complaint and removal have led to a huge amount of publicity for Repeal The 8th movement. It’s kind of backfired.
You mean like an advert for condoms?
It’s not really about abortion directly, is it, but about the political and social movement to repeal the amendment making abortion illegal. If it was a logo for an abortion provider, you might be closer to the mark, but, i dunno, there might be something to be said for demistifying it a little.
Yep. I think it’s very important to seperate personal feelings on abortion from the issues around repealing the 8th. Plenty of people I’ve spoken to don’t seem to see the difference.
in your case subhuman
IT’s not going to be human, It already is human.
It’s a big red cartoon heart. Bubbly and happy.
Yes, like someone who now is not condemned to continue a pregnancy against her will. The relief!
Not really. Cartoon hearts denote love, but what type of love depends on context, whether romantic or parental or just generalised affection. Not automatically happy and bubbly, though usually positive, certainly. Maybe you just have a problem with the Repeal movement trying to be a positive one? Surely the idea that women who undergo abortions are better off if people treat them with affection and a little positivity and avoid blame and recrimination isn’t such a bad thing?
Women who murder their babies are both Nazis and Isis and need to be punished. It’s what Jesus would have wanted.
the same mistakes the ‘Britain Remain’ campaigners made are being made here. Preaching to the choir. The creative side of society are making badges and art, jumpers etc. But that only gets seen by each other. If you wear a nicely designed badge with an ‘x’ thru the 8, it looks nice, its a nice design, it does not reach Mary down in tullamore who’s local priest tells her we must keep the 8th amendment. There’s no point creating things that (a) might not be directly understood or (b) wont reach the people we need to educate. Just saying repeal, or repeal the 8th, doesnt educate either. All this time, money and talent, should be used in a way to reach and educate people who are against repealing the 8th. I dont know how to do that right now, but thats what needs to be figured out.
abortion is a sure fire way to get rid of all these poor inbred numpties.
There’s no point trying to “educate” Mary down in Tullamore. All this is about pressuring the government.
The most intelligent comment on BS in a long time
Well it must have prolife groups worried if they’re threatening to vandalise it and demand it get’s taken down.
As if the people ‘on your side’ don’t need to be mobilised and informed and engaged.
they ALWAYS have murals but someone at DCC doesn’t like this one so suddenly it’s in violation of planning permission.
My guess is that they have had complaints citing the legislation so they had no choice but to act. As a rule, I’d imagine most people are happy to ignore stuff that they don’t have to do anything about.
a calculated pr campaign. they knew well there would be objections and the gee mafia now get to give out.
“the gee mafia ”
For wanting to control their own wombs?
“gee mafia”. so tell me, how long have you been single?
the ‘gee mafia’ sounds fantastic, how do I join?
Send in your flaplacation form.
HA
His whole life, I’d imagine.
“gee mafia”
You can’t deny, that’s tremendous. An Irish Pussy Riot?
That you came up with “gee mafia” over when geestapo was right there says a lot about your intelligence.
lol
very Night Porter!
Please, everybody, stand back. Give him some room. This one has been hurt, and badly.
Haven’t you, old boy?
The Gee Mafia, led by Val Capone.
excuse me, Vag Capone, thankyouverymuch.
You’re right of course :)
God be with the days when Projecet was know for controversies that took place on its stage.
Aye, fierce terrible altogether, this painting of a heart, t’be sure, t’be sure. I long for the good old days of low crime and plain walls.
My late uncle was one of the founders of Project Arts and I can promise you he would have been behind this piece of art, and the sentiment behind it 100 percent.
That is that settled then.
Yes. Yes it is.
yes its an irish pussy riot. Membership is available.
How would you know?
I thought it was only sticks and stones that could break our bones , but its may not be true anymore …..
I saw one of those ad trucks driving around merrion square complaining abour pro life voices being silenced
by RTE a few weeks ago. In hindsight I wish I had complained to comreg about it.
It’s already turning into a battle – I saw this yesterday in the Sun Times:
http://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/ireland/pro-life-group-sends-begging-email-to-backers-76hhtdccq
Get ready to complain about Family and Life, the anti abortion lobby group who don’t think they need to register with SIPO, and bring their billboards, lobbying, donations etc to the attention of the relevant authority figures.
Let’s not allow a stupid amount of US money to impact on our social policies.
Ah yes, Family and Life. For when Youth Defence isn’t inhumane enough.
“This highlights how incredibly divisive the issue of abortion can be – at least for some.”
Jayson, this is divisive. Even its divisive-ness is divisive.
From the Irish Times: The Pro Life Campaign responded on Monday afternoon, describing the behaviour of the Centre as “absurd and unacceptable. […] The Project Arts Centre should belong to everyone and not have such a close-minded attitude on what constitutes freedom of expression.”
Irony overload!
Still waiting for Cora to report those dodgy doctors ,she claimed existed on news talk, to the Gardai.
Jaysus wept….
wow, that is impressive even by their standards
Is it possible to make a counter complaint about the removal?
Bring on the referendum to repeal he 8th. And the next one. And the next one.
