The greatest live performance deserving of a golden discs voucher was undoubtedly Freddie Mercury’s performance at live aid where we almost literally held the audiences voices in his hand

    Leonard Cohen – Suzanne
His gig at Lisadell House was a magic gig. The musical genius on stage belying his years with his stage presence, surrounded visually by Benbulben behind the stage and St Johns point in view to the right.

‘The greatest live performance deserving of the Golden Discs voucher was obviously Rod Stewart’s “Have You Ever Seen The Rain” (CCR)

And there’s in a “it must be said” attachment

U2’s “Where The Streets Have No Name”
    (My favourite ever video FYI)

The greatest live performance deserving of the Golden Discs voucher was obviously Arcade Fire at Electric Picnic 2005. The tent could only hold a couple of thousand people but I’ve probably met ten times that who said they were there. Nothing makes a performance iconic like a whole lot of people faking memories of being there.
That or Beastie Boys at a later Electric Picnic when the guards had to be called to restrict the amount of people trying to get into the tent, they had to remove the walls of the tent for people who couldn’t get near it to at least be able to hear it.

Yep. Take everything literally, Hank. That’s the way to live life. It must be interestingly conflicting for you to pass any food emporium

So if you havn’t met that many people, maybe the people who told you they were at the gig were at the gig.

There was loads of room at the Beastie Boys at the front for that set. Too many precious souls didn’t want to stand in the muck in the tent though!
Arcade fire were decent, I was crammed near front as Goldfrapp and Royksopp were on before and after them.

We were up at the railings at the back.
Went back for the second performance of Beastie Boys on day two as well – guards all over it thinking everyone would be back – barely anyone there.

I went last year and found it… lacking. In comparison with earlier years, the quality of the festival, the atmosphere, has all gone downhill. Won’t be going again. We’ve stuck to the smaller festivals this year and they’ve been really lovely.

        1. Penfold

the line-up that year was excellent. Nick Cave, Kraftwerk, Flaming lips (before their show becoming too repetitive), and Fatboy Slim (with the smiley face glasses things that were handed out)
          Was a nice size too.

AH you’re taking me back now … God we are old now aren’t we.

first time seeing flaming lips was in Vicar St, that was a special gig. Gave out lazer pointers to the crowd on the way in.
And then at Bob Dylan in Kilkenny…and then yeah every time after that it was the same but still good craic

The greatest live performance deserving of the Golden Discs voucher was obviously Metallica at the MTV European Music awards 1996 when they sang Last Caress and So What! A very funny moment!

  6. Steve

The greatest live performance deserving of the Golden Discs voucher was obviously Metallica and the San Francisco Symphony orchestra in 1999. One the best live albums ever made!!

Some other person stole Freddy Mercury at Live Aid in 1985 which I would have picked myself,

Simon & Garfunkel – Bridge Over Troubled Water – Madison Square Garden, NYC – 2009

A voice from God, delivering a song written by a genius, accompanied by the perfect musicians.

The two just couldn’t get on together, but you can clearly see that they have deep love and respect for each other.

    Spine tingling stuff.

  8. The Bad Ambassador

Can’t believe I’m saying this… but the most visually stunning live performance I have ever seen has been Pink’s “Glitter in the Air”. Would’t be my kind of music (Mrs. Ambassador loves it) – it’s not a bad aul’ song to be fair but when she is swinging around in some silks with spirals of water running off her body, it’s pretty impressive.

Here she is at the grammys: https://vimeo.com/12338443

Good gigs that spring to mind was seeing the Skatalites in Dolans Warehouse, around 2004 direction. Live up the road at the time so popped in just about on time for the gig. No sign of anything, so went for a pint in Dolans pub next door. They tumbled into the pub about a half an hour later, all of of them looking fairly elderly and monged, the lead singer was like a 70 year old version of Shane MacGowan if he’d gone rasta. They decide to have a meal in the restaurant section. Bought a ticket and not your regular limerick band, so decided to wait it out. About 70 minutes later they appear onstage in the Warehouse. By this time I’m a bit annoyed.
Then they start playing and they are ELECTRIC. My body was taken over. All is forgiven.
The intensity dips slightly in the second half, but overall the gig is amazing.
Saw footage of them playing electric picnic a few years later and couldn’t believe they were the same band. They sounded sh**te.

Adebisi Shank were good live too. Preferred them live to their albums.

A tricky one this, initially I thought of REM in Slane in 1995 and then I thought of Guns N Roses, Wembley 1991. Good live performances but lacking something special to make them memorable I thought. Some further thought and I decided to go with:

The greatest live performance deserving of the Golden Discs voucher was obviously U2 and L. Pavarotti – Miss Sarajevo.

We have to wait over three minutes for the great, late, Luciano Pavarotti to replace the soft and familiar voice of Bono with a voice from the gods and it’s so worth it. Instant goosebumps. Great video, wonderful lyrics and poignancy, timeless piece of live music.

‘The greatest live performance deserving of the Golden Discs voucher was obviously robbie brady, chants, music, love, tears.. it had it all.

  12. Squiggleyjoop

‘The greatest live performance deserving of the Golden Discs voucher was obviously Girlfriend Is Better from Stop Making Sense.

That accolade must surely go to Dustin for his trojan effort, in Dustin does Twink, again.
    Though nothing smutty of course.
