Behind The Blue Door

Ellen Coyne and Catherine Sanz, of The Times Ireland Edition, went undercover at an ‘abortion advice’  centre in Berkeley Street, Inns Quay, Dublin 7.

The Women’s Centre advertises itself as an impartial source of advice for women who want to travel to the UK to access an abortion but has direct links to a Catholic anti-abortion group

…A woman working at the clinic, who claimed to be a counsellor, told her that breasts and ovaries were connected and that when a pregnancy ended unexpectedly a woman’s reproductive system could be damaged, causing breast cancer…and that abortion could lead to women abusing their children in the future.

Abortion causes cancer, women’s centre claims (The Times Ireland Edition)

the entire homeopathy industry needs to consult their legal team if so.

Its unregulated, so i assume they can do what they want.

        1. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

+1 see also the herbology people, the angel consultants, holy men etc

          1. Owen C

I’ m actually forced to justify/explain major life decisions we make vs what a fortune teller told my wife 5 or 6 years ago.

          2. mildred st. meadowlark

One of the angel people got to my mum when she was in a vulnerable place. They’re utter vultures. I feel your pain/impotent fury/volcanic anger.

          3. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

Seriously Owen? That’s a battle you can’t win. Unless you set up an elaborate “angel” to come and leave little clues around the place.

I never really heard of anyone going to angel people or fortune tellers before moving to Ireland and then suddenly everyone seemed to go, even those who would scoff at church goers for believing in sky fairies.

          4. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

@mildred – Same with mine. Total scammers feeding off the sorrows and worries of others.

        1. Starina

it’s called investigative journalism. if she was really pregnant i’m sure you’d say it was crass to use her pregnancy for a story.

          1. Tony

Shooting fish in a barrel more like. What did she think the counsellor was going to say? So she lied, got her recording and whoopla! A fully formed multi media story for the outrage brigade. A good days work.

          2. mildred st. meadowlark

Subverting information, altering it, offering false and incorrect information to women in a desperate situation for the sake of private agenda is nasty and underhanded, regardless of which side of the argument you sit on.

          3. Nigel

We don’t have to ‘think’ about what it was the counsellor was going to say, because the counsellor said it and it was reported: JOURNALISM! Redundant for people on the internet who already know it all, true, but of use to mere mortals like the rest of us.

        2. 15 cent

Tony. Do you or do you not think, that it is bad for this place to tell pregnant girls false information of this magnitude? Think of a young girl who has became pregnant, going in there, and then being further terrified because she’s being told she could get cancer and what not.. an unneccesary added fear on top of what shes going thru .. it sounds like you’re ok with that. you’re more incensed about investigative journalism .. you genuinely dont care about what these girls are going thru and how its made far far worse by these lies .. explain yourself, because you dont sound human at the moment

        3. 15 cent

“What did she think the counsellor was going to say?” .. are you implying that everyone should expect advice centre counsellors to lie? you’re a fuppin idiot, Tony. A pig-headed, moron. you really are. no logic at all.

    1. Count Chuckula

No Tony, it’s not a crime to “tell lies when being a journalist”. A journalist can ethically and legally engage in misrepresentation when it is deemed in the public interest. The “public interest” is broadly defined, but it could include exposing a crime or serious impropriety, protecting public safety or preventing the public from being misled.

It is beyond any reasonable argument that this is what Ellen Coyne has done in this case. Her deception – passing herself off as a woman with a crisis pregnancy – was required because she could not have revealed the immoral activities of this organisation in any other way. Any reasonable observer would agree that using outright lies and superstitions to frighten and coerce already vulnerable women is wrong, and that Coyne was right to expose it.

      1. Tony

But she wasn’t vulnerable. She lied about being pregnant. It wasn’t real. And as for bringing morality into it.. That’s just a perspective as the counsellor and the journalist have demonstrated.

          1. Nigel

Code of conduct? We’re not talking about rigidly enforced morality, then? What code of conduct did the journalist sign up to that made her subterfuge equal to or worse than fraudulent medical advice?

        1. Count Chuckula

Coyne didn’t “lie”, Tony (as I have just explained, and as as you well know). She presented herself as a woman with a crisis pregnancy in order to uncover the activities of an organisation that purport to offer advice and counselling to women but in actuality gives them demonstrably false and potentially damaging information. In posing as a member of the public, she performed a public service.

          1. Caroline™

Yet he’s managed to derail the whole thread just by repeatedly slamming his mons pubis off the asymmetric bars. You have to admire how willing he is to debase himself just to get our attention. We should be flattered. *winces*

        2. ahjayzis

Why are you people engaging with this imbecile?

He’s either got massive comprehension problems and has just discovered the concept of investigative journalism, or is a troll successfully deflecting the discussion away from the bad-doers.

          Ignore the cretin FFS.

  1. The Real Jane

What shocking lies these people tell. I mean, they can’t possibly believe what they’re saying.

      1. The Real Jane

And? What has that to do with the lies that she was told on the assumption that she was a vulnerable person in a crisis situation?

          1. The Real Jane

Alright Tony, since your persona today is “more stupid than nature intended”, I’ll let you at it.

      2. Micheál

How do you come to that conclusion? If she knew she wasn’t pregnant, surely she wouldn’t have gone on with this charade. She gave all that “advice” precisely because she thought she was pregnant.

  2. Tony

Hilarious to see the staunch defence of journalism after last Friday’s loonfest. By your choices you define yourself.

    1. Owen C

Does the counsellor have a duty of care to provide accurate advice to people who come looking for help? Yes, this cannot be denied.

Does the journalist have a duty of care to be 100% honest with people they are investigating? No, absolutely not. Indeed, the actions of journalists are constitutionally protected in many countries given their importance to society.

Tony, this is how people in the real world go about their lives. Come join us some time.

      1. Tony

That’s the point. In the real world people don’t go around lying about being pregnant. In the real world she lied, which makes things not real.

        1. tucker

Good great jeebus, Tony, give it a break. I’m sure your English teacher in school wasn’t exactly telling you the truth when he/she lauded you for your excellent debating skills.

    2. Dόn 'The Unstoppable Force' Pídgéόní

Tony, I know devils advocate is your shtick but you’re really reaching on this one. They are two different stories and two different ways of covering them. It’s sad to see that what you are taking from this is immoral lying journalists not immoral lying “independent” counselors.

      1. Zuppy International

If they can lie about their “pregnancy” what’s to stop them lying about the “Councillor”?

        Fake news is fake.

        #admitabortionismurder

    3. Bob

I think it’s not as hilarious as the cultists who can’t defend what their organisation did and instead have to complain about a journalist’s tactics for getting the truth.

      1. Daisy Chainsaw

It’s no different than the “sting” by “prolife” on the Irish Family Planning Association. There was no problem with lying about a personal situation then!

  3. The Real Jane

Yeah. With grammar like that from whichever organisation produced this widely disproved nonsense, I’m going to take a pass, young Zuppers.

  4. Nigel

‘A woman working at the clinic, who claimed to be a counsellor, told her that breasts and ovaries were connected and that when a pregnancy ended unexpectedly a woman’s reproductive system could be damaged, causing breast cancer’

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8712194

‘These data support the hypothesis that there may be a small increase in the risk of breast cancer related to a history of induced abortion among young women of reproductive age. However, the data from this study and others do not permit a causal interpretation at this time; neither do the collective results of the studies suggest that there is a subgroup of women in whom the relative risk associated with induced abortion is unusually high.’

  5. mildred st. meadowlark

That information is over twenty years old. Can you reference something recent? And with actual medical accreditation, maybe.

    1. Zuppy International

The US National Center for Biotechnology Information isn’t good enough for you?

Fair enough. I’ll go back to my original position:

      #admitabortionismurder

      1. The Real Jane

I can call myself The Official Irish Centre for Biology Stuff if I want. It doesn’t make me (a) officially anything, (b) affiliated with anyone who knows anything, (c) lying.

    1. Zuppy International

What’s your point? The discussion admits the result are ambiguous [probably because they don’t want to step on their abortion cash cow]

“The results of studies looking at the possible link between breast cancer and induced abortion often differ depending on how the study was done. Cohort studies and studies that used records to determine the history of abortions have not found an increased risk. Some case-control studies, however, have found an increase in risk.”

Other actual studies point to strong correlation between induced abortion and cancer. So the claim is not at all outrageous.

“Among women who had been pregnant at least once, the risk of breast cancer in those with a prior induced abortion was 20% higher than that in women with no history of abortion (95% confidence interval 1.0-1.5).”

      http://citeseerx.ist.psu.edu/viewdoc/download?doi=10.1.1.614.2139&rep=rep1&type=pdf

      1. Nigel

‘A woman working at the clinic, who claimed to be a counsellor, told her that breasts and ovaries were connected and that when a pregnancy ended unexpectedly a woman’s reproductive system could be damaged, causing breast cancer’

      2. ethereal

In 2003, the US National Cancer Institute (NCI) held a workshop of more than 100 of the world’s leading experts who study pregnancy and breast cancer risk. The experts reviewed human and animal studies that looked at the link between pregnancy and breast cancer risk, including studies of induced and spontaneous abortions. Some of their findings were:

Breast cancer risk is increased for a short time after a full-term pregnancy (that is, a pregnancy that results in the birth of a living child).Induced abortion is not linked to an increase in breast cancer risk.Spontaneous abortion is not linked to an increase in breast cancer risk.

        And

        Conclusion

The topic of abortion and breast cancer highlights many of the most challenging aspects of studies of people and how those studies do or do not translate into public health guidelines. The issue of abortion generates passionate viewpoints in many people. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women aside from skin cancer; and breast cancer is the second leading cancer killer in women. Still, the public is not well-served by false alarms. At this time, the scientific evidence does not support the notion that abortion of any kind raises the risk of breast cancer or any other type of cancer.

      3. Mani

Zuppy, ever thinking of addressing the issues caused by your sanity abortion all those years ago? I hear it’s linked to all sorts: paranoia, nocturnal moistness, dry elbows, and a gaping need to see conspiracies everywhere rather than address the deep dark gnawing feeling in your gut that when it comes down to it, you’re just the pits.

  6. 15 cent

i cant believe how many people see this story, and for them the horrifying part is the journalist lied about being pregnant. there’s no point arguing with these people, as i can see people have tried and they are stubborn as they are stupid. just such a brazen display of stupidity. i despair for our country knowing theres dopes like Tony etc. walking around the place.

    1. Zuppy International

You’re correct. So-called “journalists” lie to us everyday. Nothing unusual about that. In fact anybody who complains is a loony-tin-foil-hat-wearing-troublemaker.

Now shut up and drink the Kool-Aid.

      1. MoyestWithExcitement

Kool Aid? You know that’s not sold in Ireland, right? So you’re either a yank or someone reciting yank propaganda. Either way, you’re evidently not an innocent punter giving their opinion. Youth Defence, are you?

“Keep eating the cool pops” is more homely, and has the bonus of not mocking 900 murder victims in Guyana.

      2. Nigel

Apparently pro-lifers do too, misrepresenting themselves and giving dubious-to-say-the-least medical advice. But the journalist presented herself as pregnant, which is the real shocker.

        1. mildred st. meadowlark

Nigel, care to join me for an outrage party? I’m going to pelt eggs at some journalists who *lied*.

          1. Nigel

            Sure, I’m up for that!

            *writes shocking expose of throwing-eggs-at-lying-journalists-phenomenon*
*is publicly excoriated for totally lying about being up for it*
            *gets hit by eggs*

      1. 15 cent

id say we’re safe from Tony having kids. It would take some truly awful creature from the bowels of hell to agree to breed with him. And he’d be well below even their standards. which might explain his carry on. i’d probably be overly agitated and irrational if i literally never had sex either.

          1. Tony

Just pointing out the facts Fluffy. No need to bring personal invective into it, unless you want to prove that you’ve nothing else left.

    2. Kieran NYC

What you don’t realize is that Tony is a fake troll persona. The person posting probably doesn’t believe what they post, they just like the argument and reaction.

Multiple people on here have admitted as much and still no one gets it. They even switch personas and manufacture a fight with themselves to draw people in. They’re never banned. And so we have the current BS comments section.

    1. Daisy Chainsaw

      They are qualified!

Qualified in lying, but forgiven by the baby Jeesus for saving the babies.

Bring back the Laundries! They’d sort out those uppity shluts quickfast!

  7. Junkface

Religious people can be toxic in society. This is a good example of evil, spreading fear. This is from people who fully support a Church which made children sexual objects to be raped and tortured for centuries.

Oh but they REALLY care about everyone.

    1. ahjayzis

      You’ve misunderstood.

Religious nuts care deeply about our next life living with their zombie carpenter deity in the sky.

It’s this one they want to make us suffer in – because then we win extra points n the next life. Ya get me?

      So really they’re being kind.

  8. Casey

Wow. You can just tell that is from a peer reviewed paper. Medical professionals and their well known inability to spell medical terms.

  9. Dave

Language is made up so its not real.

Buildings are imagined and fabricated from man made materials so they are not real.

Tony appears only in comment section so he’s not real.
