Why is the legalisation issue always framed as how much taxes it would raise.

What about the economic activity in general it would create which is of much greater value to people than giving it in taxes to politicians.

You’re right, the dramatic increase of snackfood sales would be a serious boon to newsagents all over the country.

Because EVERYTHING in this benighted country is always assessed in those terms. Ever listen to RTE news – tv or radio – whether it’s tourists, commerce, innovation, artistic endeavour the reporting always hones in on “six millun to de local economy”. Nothing whatever about the actual merit of the thing.

also imagine a world where a stuffy git like Enda Kenny would ever consider such a thing. i can see his squirrel face now, with his school teacher voice goin they never use ‘drug money’ to raise funds. sure we already know he doesnt care too much for money, apple tax, nama etc.

well lets see. guards estimates it as €800 a plant so 1500 plants equals 1.2 million. in reality a plant is worth one hundred at most so a street value of €15000 if not less. The police (a crack team of elite hero’s no doubt) will make more money from OT following up this “crime”. tax payers will foot the bill in court fees and incarcerating the nine involved . how much does it cost to prosecute and follow through a sentence for a few years. 1.2 million “drugs” responsibility devided by nine? €133333 (€1666) each? how many years in jail?

just legalise it, then people who enjoy it can watch every budget for tax increases – same as drinkers and tobacco smokers

Im all for farming the weed, but id like to know more about the workers conditions on these farms. Usually imported, asian and unpaid. Thats the real crime. This never gets reported cos pictures of plants work better i guess.

“Evidence of exploitation and human suffering? I’ll pass. Pictures of plants that make people squiffy though! That’s what really sell papers”

  3. Fully Keen

    It’s illegal.

And will be on this backward little island for decades to come.

    Get over it.

    It’s embarrassing.

  4. Lord Lucan

Legalising weed for medical reasons seems like a no brainer especially when it can stop adults and childran having seizures.

Of course I would completely legalise it. Based off Colorado who have a slightly bigger population than us, if it was legalized and taxed we could expect to add €100m profit to the exchequer. That doesn’t even include the other benefits such as increased tourism and increased economic activities due to it’s legalization.

Also it would greatly reduce gangland crime. There is a reason why the Kinahan’s are openly killing people on our streets and that reason is money.

Of course our booze consumption would probably fall so expect the drinks companies to fight it tooth and nail.

I agree with Lord Lucan, and I’m very relaxed right now, if you know what I mean. wink, wink…

Delighted. The should burn it in public in a town square and make us all sit around nice and close and [s] sniff [/s]watch as a deterrent.

” Go to your room, and don’t come out until they’re all smoked! ” was a common parental punishment back in the day for being caught with fags….

So, why not with the doobies… dang it!

  6. Mourinho

    Legalize it for medicinal purposes?

    Sure. In tablet form.

Then what argument will the recreational smokers use?

While everyone is waiting for their houses to be inevitably broken into, cars/bikes stolen, corruption up the ying yang and they waste their time and resources on removing these plants from circulation, pure waste of time. The most dangerous thing about weed it the increased possibility of violence or psychological trauma due to needless incarceration.
It’s long past the time for rational, scientific and truthful education of it’s effects and then just tax the damn consumption of it…
The rationale for it’s prohibition, if applied to alcohol, would have booze banned for sale a long ago, money talks I suppose.

  8. Junkface

The drug war they are LOSING is a total waste of time and energy. Legalise weed now and concentrate on serious crime. Look at USA, don’t Irish politicians worship everytthing the US does?

  9. sǝɯǝɯʇɐpɐq

    There’s no justification for prohibition.
    It just serves the cartels.

Only the minions go to prison…
    …funny, isn’t it?

    Yeah.

And remember Kids… you aren’t allowed kill anybody… It’s totally against the law.
