This morning.
Custom House Quay, Dublin
President Higgins marked United Nations International Day for the Eradication of Poverty with an address at the Famine monument.
President Higgins said:
“When strangers who arrive on our shores in need or difficulty are left in the uncertain limbo of direct provision for anything up to ten years, I am ashamed.
When homeless families are forced to live in one hotel room devoid of cooking facilities, and subjected to a dehumanising set of rules and conditions; when others without a roof over their head are condemned to wander the streets by day, and desperately seek space in homeless shelters by night, we as a nation are failing to display the necessary spirit of humanity on which a democracy should be built.”

and yet the alt right will attack him for being Michael D Higgins, nothing to say about the shameful governance being displayed by Merrion Square.
it’s usually the loopier side of the left attacking him for not refusing to sign legislation that they don’t agree with
Have the Scientologists already taken over? Damn, that’s quick work.
he could accom a few down the park?
Yeah, great, that will sort out the homeless crisis and the refugee problem – they can all stay at the President’s gaff – would you ever.,.,…..
it would get them out of his blushirt sight and then out of his blushirt mind..
Yeah, great, that will sort out the homeless crisis and the refugee problem – they can all stay at the Presidents gaff – would you ever………….
It’s as if he’s the only politician in the country who can actually see with clear eyes what is happening and what is right to do about it.
He’s not looking to get reelected anymore. Apparently it’s massively freeing.
That’s unfair. He was hardly Thatcheresque when he was in the Dail. Don’t tar them all etc.
Michael D lives in luxury paid for by the taxpayer…………housekeepers, cooks servants.
He’s some socialist
And would it help anybody if he lived on oatmeal and went around with no arse in his trousers, ollie? Try getting annoyed at the people who COULD do something about these things, and won’t.
What ? people like Michael D who was a Minister and long serving TD but did nothing except add another massive pension to his collection
Man with pension entitlements from the public purse amounting to 250,000 qhowls at the injustice of poverty …… what a charlatan
Yes. The President of the nation should be homeless because some people are homeless.
Tell the Government Mr D, they can change that. The man on the street can only do so much to help but the solution needs to from the top down not the bottom up.
The water tax president waffling on about poverty. If we are lucky he might write us a little poem.
If he had referred the bill to the Supreme Court, and it had been found constitutional, then the Bill /Act would be rendered immune from legal challenge in perpetrator. As it stands the legislation in question is still open to attack, or amendment.
*perpetuity not perpetrator
Lol, like that was the so called socialist’s intention all along.
When Higgins flings open the doors of the Vice Regal Lodge to those
yearning to break free from poverty and to give shelter to those with no
home, and renouce the huge salary and live on Old Age Pension we might
take heed of him, but verbal gestures are worthless for man that knew
poverty in his youth.
