An email from Cheryl Mills of the US Department of State t to John Podesta, Clinton Campaign chairman, leaked by  Wikileaks this afternoon, indicating that President Barack Obama knew of Hillary Clinton’s private email server, the focus of an FBI probe, despite claiming that he learned of its existence from watching the news.

Good times.

Meanwhile…

apple

Oh.

An email from Lisa Jackson, vice president of Apple’s Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives assuring  the Clinton campign of its law and order values.

    The key word is ‘indicates’

it’s just some staffer’s opinion until proven, in what may or may not be an email from them

‘despite claiming’ however are weasel words – typical Irish gutter tabloid journalism

    bravo!

before all the nuts get involved

  2. Mayav

The desperation to find scandalous angles in these overall pretty mundane emails is quite something. People just can’t accept there is no equivalence between Donald and Hillary.

    1. Faecal Matters

in fairness I guess Assange is getting quite peed off at being the house guest of the Ecuador embassy. Perhaps he mistakenly believes he will troll DOJ into forcing the Swedes to call off that nasty rape investigation

      1. Mayav

I was sympathetic towards him until he talked about the Jews controlling the media and US election the other day. Although maybe there is something in what you said. He’s been locked in a small room for years now. That has to be messing with his sanity.

    2. Twunt

The eMails are mundane, but the server that was illegal and the lies to conceal it are serious matters.

        1. Listrade

The server itself isn’t illegal and appears to be common practice, however, the handling of classified information through the server is illegal. It is pretty nailed on that HC did handle all kinds of classified material through the server. It is also nailed on that she lied about this. It is also nailed on that from the wikileaks Podesta emails her campaign only found out late on about the issue and were a bit peeved about it to say the least.

At the end of it all, the FBI report shows numerous breaches of sending and receiving classified documents through the private server. States as much, but only goes as far to say that HC was “extremely careless” and didn’t recommend criminal charges.

The whole conspiracy surrounds why, even though there seems to be evidence of criminal act, there was no charge against HC. The Podesta emails don’t give any additional insight to the situation, more the behind the scenes “WTF” of her campaign as they try to handle the PR side.

A more likely explanation for the lack of FBI action, outside the conspiracy, is that this is very common practice. GW Bush has had his own scandal with an email server (though he managed to delete his and didn’t cooperate with any investigation), if the prosecuted HC, it would open a can of worms as it is highly unlikely HC would go down without taking everyone down with her. This stuff has been going on for years across several Senators and Presidencies.

These tinfoil posts are class. Careful you don’t pop a nut from squeezing out the Hillary hate there Bodger!

  4. Chris

So tired of this. I can’t even vote in the US but I must say I don’t care if she had an an email server, in fact if I was her I’d do the same. The fact is she new the CIA would be spying on her but she can’t say that. Also she is one of many to do the same thing, Colin Powell for instance. Also, gee wonder why her emails aren’t on Wikileaks, it’s because she had her own server. The state servers are worse than leaky sieves, it would be mad for her not to of had her own server. Lastly the cry babies who say she put state secrets at risk are hand wringing Republican opportunists, these ‘secrets’ were far less safe on the state dept servers, which have been the source of so many leaks.

        1. Kolmo

‘Gee wonder?’ is that a new superhero I haven’t heard of?

Bur seriously, US elections are the the most boring thing on earth.

    1. SOQ

Why? I would assume all IT companies have similar policies as Apple.

Many years ago I worked for a communications company. Mobiles, pagers etc. The drug squad (some of who would scare the life out of you because they looked so junked) would walk in and ask to see all records for an individual, which they got without question. And that was not in the USA.

      This is not news.

    2. Jake38

Apple complies with legal requests for data to investigate crimes.

Yeah, huge problem for them. Not.

      1. Caroline™

The gushing and toadying about enthusiastically complying with government data requests is very much at odds with how they present themselves to their customers these days. And yet that slight PR discomfort is literally the high water mark of these bombshells.

  5. bisted

…election is over as far as Paddy Power is concerned…they have already paid out on crooked Hilary…

  6. SomeChump

She’s running against a fascist whose campaign was prepared to accept an illegal donation from a Chinese business man in exchange for influence. If anyone believes he would not be corrupt and mendacious in office they are deluding themselves. He’s also due in court before the end of the year to face charges of rape against a child and has been accused of sexual assault

      1. Mayav

Hillary is an emotionally stable racist with the necessary temperament and experience for presiding over the government of the USA. Trump is a fragile man child racist who is completely crazy. I’m going with the non crazy racist here.

          1. Mayav

Not really. Just pointing out that even if she is, it’s not a reason to stop supporting her because the alternative is Trump who actually is a racist. Plus he’s crazy and highly insecure. Do you support Trump? Anything to say about his racism seeing as it’s clearly an important factor in this election for you?

          2. Mr Reality

More pseudo science, so if your not Hillary you have to be trump, I’m for neither but comparing her to trump doesn’t excuse how blatantly inadequate Hillary Clinton is

      2. petey

don’t forget to mention that she “got a child rapist off the hook.” don’t let the side down now.

      3. ahjayzis

        Stop the whatabouttery.

There’s no “re-open nominations” or “none of the above” on the ballot paper. That’s the rotten system. You don’t have to like either of them, but there’s a choice of TWO. Would it be Hillary or Trump?

  7. Joe Cool

I might get banned but hey Ho. Bodge, I seriously hope you are being ironic because your posts on this make you look like a 14 yr old child. We are not stupid. The big bad woman done bad things. Think about this for a minute, You are supporting the support of a serial molester by a man wanted on a rape charge!! A man in hiding in an embassy instead of facing his RAPE charge. Your support of Trump is laughable as his intelligence is probably akin to yours

    1. Mr Reality

Nice pseudo science there Joe, so if your not Hillary you have to be trump is that your warped view this?

        1. Mr Reality

If you don’t like his opinion high tail it to a fluffy safe space where snowflakes can bask in agreement and pretend that everyone who disagrees is a troll

      1. ahjayzis

Mr Reality – you do understand the US system of electing presidents?

Your comment makes ZERO sense. It IS a binary choice.

      2. ahjayzis

Nothing warped about that. There’s a choice of two – two people have a chance of getting the required Electoral College votes to become president – you get that right? Let us know where you’re misunderstanding the situation?

        1. Mr Reality

So your saying I have to be either one or the other, nothing else..!!?

Your actually encouraging people to be gullible

          1. ahjayzis

You can choose to abstain if you were a US voter, or vote for a hopeless third party. And they are hopeless, not even being on the ballot in all states.

If you genuinely can’t decide which is the lesser of two evils, in this case the thoroughly unpalatable status quo candidate versus nativist racist fascistic narcissism, then stay in bed.

          2. Mr Reality

So you don’t have to choose between the two stooges, thanks for pointing out how correct I was, I’m anti warlord so id go with abstain as both illegal candidate Hillary and Netanyahu front man trump are blatantly inadequate

  8. Mr Reality

I’d bet Obama is regretting signing that deal with Iran, breitbart and assange sprung up straight after and went directly after the weak link Hillary

      1. Mr Reality

Eh they are going ahead with it anyway Kieran, this time they have US support that’s why Netanyahu was so upset

        1. Mr Reality

cue the breitbart anti Hillary slur campaign she’s the weak link because of her dubious past

          1. Mr Reality

And the democrats put her illegally front and centre, very strange it’s almost contrived imo

  9. Steph Pinker

I know BS is a tiny cog in the wheel of the internet where most people commenting choose to be anonymous, but why do regular commenters (and I include BS staff in this) keep changing their usernames? Names may be changed and identities and agendas altered according to whatever topic is published on any given day; however, what I don’t understand is why regular commenters on BS don’t have the courage of their convictions – or more importantly – feel they can’t post comments under their regular usernames? It’s pretty obvious that some are trolling, but many more are not.

    1. Captain freegear

You mean Kieran KFC aka fake Sheikh aka Nigel aka Moyest aka clampers aka ahhjaysus and all the other pseudonyms?

      1. Steph Pinker

I think you missed my point, Captain. BS is full of individuals who, hypocritically, like to make their opinions known through various guises and identities – that’s what I can’t comprehend; why not stick to one username, especially considering everyone’s anonymous? Is it because people like to troll? Is it because people have conflicting views on many issues? Is it because some people like to troll and others like to troll them back without the consequences of being re-trolled/ stalked? Is it because some people have established a reasonable identity and personality associated with one username, and they don’t want to sully their anonymous online identity by expressing alternative views which would be deemed unpopular by most of the regular commenters or editorial policy? Or, is it boredom simply because BS provides a platform to say things many people wouldn’t say to other peoples’ faces?

I think the internet is fascinating, and it’s a wonderful source of information if you know how to separate the wheat from the chaff when it comes to research, reading and knowledge – and it’s not too bad for a bit of humour, puns, cat videos or satire either, but, what I don’t understand is why it brings out the worst in many of us. At the end of the day, we may be anonymous to each other [which sounds like an oxymoron], but ultimately, we are the only ones responsible for what we write and how we think, therefore, what we write online is a representation of who we are; so, my question is: are there really that many angry, opinionated, frustrated nasty people in the world, and if so, where have they been hiding and what have they been doing for all those years before internet fora became a personal outlet?

        1. Janet, I ate my avatar

Don’t mind them, some fair points. The angry people have always been out there, you bump into them more when you are in the service industry but that’s beside the point.
I reckon people stop engagement with the more virulent trolls so they have to reinvent, the tone comes through though.

          1. Mr Reality

Yea ignore those awful people with differing opinions Steph/SOQ they’re like a fart they will be gone before you know it and the safe space restored

        2. SOQ

There a couple of individuals on this site who have multiple usernames. Only BS can say if they are using the same email address for each one. Either way, it is highly likely they are using the same IP. They are not hard to tell because the usual sneering, one up-manship and personal attacks begin pretty soon after.

Only they can really say why they do it but in one particular case it appears that this person feels that they have a duty to act as some sort of new puritan PC Police. So he or she keeps switching usernames because nobody would engage with them otherwise, which is pretty sad really.

This sort of behaviour is definitely doing Broadsheet harm.

          1. Mr Reality

Help BS the trolls are disagreeing with me again, I’m playing the fluffy snowflake card again in the hope moderators will intervene

  10. anne

How would receiving an email from a personal email address as opposed to a work one indicate to the recipient of the email what server is being used by the sender at the time?

    1. Cian

If you received an email from “taoiseach@taoiseach.gov.ie” you’d know that this came from the server taoiseach.gov.ie – and have reason to trust it was from Enda. On the other hand if you got one from “Enda.Kenny@FineGael.ie” it came from the server FineGael.ie – again you would have a good idea from where it came.
However if you got it from Enda12Kenny@xmail.com you *may* suspect that it was a bit dodge.

PS I made up the email addresses – I don’t know if they work,

      1. anne

Not really no. You can send personal emails from work by logging into the relevant service providers mailing service..gmail or whatever. It wouldn’t necessarily indicate that a separate server is being used.

        1. Cian

Really, yes. If you use gmail from work, then the email is going through the gmail server – not your work server. It won’t be stored on your work server. it is stored in your gmail sent items.

          1. SOQ

            Not quite true.

If you use a personal email via a browser on a company PC then what you type is monitored. If you type a banned word for example then it will flag up to the administrator via security software just the same as if you used the company email address.

There is no reason why your employer cannot record what you type into gmail/hotmail as the equipment is their property because while you may be using a private email to send, it can still be traced back to the company’s IP range.

It’s about liability rather than ‘big bother’.

  11. Truth in the News

We need to get Assange to have a peep at a few servers here, especially the
the traffic to the Dept of Finance in the last 10 years in their dealings with the
EU and more recently Apple….a little known, a lot more to find out:
The Drug Squad will hardly ask for it when they next trott out to Swords or indeed
    Merrion Street.

      1. Mr Reality

Yea he might hack the fine gael ard fheis imagine if that happened he might than leak it to assange and the mossad
