The thing is – the reason why homeless people don’t use shelters is because of other drugs users, or that’s what the homeless claim. They won’t stay here. They prefer to be out on the street drinking & taking drugs. They don’t want tl face up to their responsibilities. They want a free pass to do whatever they want, including a free home. This is a disgrace & they should be told to be realistic. Commitment is needed first, they must take the initial sacrifice.
Also, to add – these ‘celebrities’ are only endorsing this for publicity.

What would you consider to be a realist offer for homeless people Rhianna? We’ll provide you with a home in return for what? How does it reflect on our society if we can’t provide for those in need without expecting something in return?
There is a valid point being made, the homeless that are drug users and out and out scum should not be allowed into those shelters. Alot less would sleep rough if those shelters were safe. Take the shelter in Thomas street broadsheet loves to go on about, since it opened the homeless drug user problem is much much worse in the area. So why not just ban all junkies.
1. the law does not differentiate the reasons for becoming homeless, it only identifies need and allocates accordingly. the law may allow a refusal of accommodation or status if that person has made or is keeping themselves homeless. so, for anyone working with homeless persons, labels like ‘junkie’, ‘scum’ etc. are unhelpful, to say the least.
2. there are facilities for those with active substance issues, just like there are those who only take homeless persons without. all homeless services are not the same – please remember this.
3. thomas st/cornmarket area has long been an area renowned for drug dealing and not just because of the prevalence of homeless services. granted, that area has a high prevalence of facilities but in my opinion homeless services should be far less concentrated on the city centre. there should be a service in each district to save homeless persons from say, balbriggan having to be accommodated in town.
4 ban all junkies? ok, you tell me one time, one place that it’s ever worked.
In a society we expect people to abide by particular ‘rules’ – the rules may either be legally enforceable laws or they may be social niceties (politeness, respect, that sort of thing).
So if people are provided a home then I don’t think it is unfair to expect something in return. This includes that they respect the house and ensure it is well kept, that they respect their neighbours and don’t do anything unsociable.

Any of the established charities will tell you that a housing first strategy is needed – you can’t get counselling, go to appointments, recover from addiction if you are sleeping on cardboard.

3000+ empty premises in the between the canals, just two or three of these useless speculator empty office blocks could be converted into community/Detox/Counseling centers or temporary accommodation for those who were screwed from day one of their lives – this never-ending set of catastrophes is a reflection on every one of us for continually voting for greasy bastards, it’s the same as 100 years ago, and 100 years before that…

Not really, the people vote for change and the governments who have such big plans in their manifestos, only to turn their back once they get elected. That’s a reflection on the government, not the people who believe they are doing the right thing.
