Basically just the south park episode with the hippy jam festival “look we’re helping” “we’re gonna send a message with music”
The facbook comments on the live video of “proud to be irish again” “take back whats ours” and “making history” hurt my eyes to read, god some people actually think this is our woodstock.
Happy Christmas, and a happy new year to you
haha brilliant
‘member Woodstock?
‘member Star Wars?
‘member Goonies?
+1 all the way!
I wrote this on my keyboard, hear me type ‘R-O-A-R-!’
Hippies.
I gifted a poem to my missus one year, was broke at the time
did it rhyme at least?
Christmas Wishes
Now do the Dishes.
Harry molloy has lots of bishes
please don’t gift things.
I’ll gift you the back of me…
Accept horses, everyone likes their local magic gift horse.
Smell of burnt sticks off the lot of em.
Fine Gaelers hate seeing all that human compassion. It’s one thing they can’t control. Makes them feel awkward, all that caring without a profit being made out of it.
Glen Hansard bringing out an new CD soon?
Oh – what an original dig, Rugbyfan. I honestly can’t understand why some people are being so cynical and nasty about this action …
not a dig just a fact, I like Hansard and have been at plenty of his gigs. publicity sells cds and vinyl.
Yeah but do you REALLY think that’s why he’s doing this? Seriously? Is that all you have to say about what is happening there?
Is it a fact? It looks like a question to me.
That muppet coveney the other day, (paraphrasing here) “oh the building isnt suitable, blah blah”
It is suitable, in one very important area.
1). It has a roof.
Anyone who has been homeless will tell you thats all that matters.
I should know.
That black and white picture at the top is ace.
Hansard has a fierce bang of Ronnie Drew offa him in that picture!
That’s a compliment, by the way.
Glen Hansard lookin more and more like a homeless person by the day.
every time i see him my mind just glazes over. boring b4st4rd.
still.
fair play.
he’s oh so earnest
You’re very quick as always to pour scorn on the efforts of these people to try to do something to help the homeless. What are you doing to help?
as always, really?
I’m just laughing at Glen, I haven’t voiced any opposition to this effort.
you, as always, are taking a pop at me.
Anyone hear on radio about the delays to traffic this caused. People moaning on and on about it.
Almost no traffic uses that street so I doubt it’s having any impact. But AA Roadwatch will probably hype it up.
The Reeling in the years moment.
There’s an unintended consequence of this protest/occupation. That is that hugely valuable income at this time of year usually donated to Focus Ireland, Simon and FPmcV Trust will get diverted elsewhere. I know that they are very, very worried.
There’s also a reason that these three organisations are staying so quiet on this – they know it’s not the right approach and they know that this will be ultimately damaging for their reputations if they do come out in support.
FWIW, I have mixed feelings on this issue. What I mean is this occupation and act of civil disobedience has clearly amplified the chronic nature of the issue and may provoke and embarrass the State into dealing with homelessness – hopefully in the long term. On the other hand, what’s next? Where next? Who deals with any legal or liability issue should something awful occur?
As Niallo states – a roof over ones head (especially this time of year) makes it suitable. For those who now have said roof – it probably is. But it’s not sustainable. for either the city or the State as a whole.
For now, if you can, make sure you give to those who can support this issue beyond Apollo House.
Ahh now you can’t be poking holes in the populism using facts and reasoned arguments, that’s not what this is about at all
He’s not doing that so try again Vin.
I’m not doing either – poking holes or using facts…. I’m voicing my own thoughts and opinions… If anyone wants’ do deem them reasoned arguments, that up to them…
@VinLieger. Facts, eh? Can’t be having them. Like the press release asking for no more donations earlier today and to please give them to other homeless hostels (Facebook around 11am this morning). They do not want to divert money from existing charities. They were just covering running costs and are not pretending to be a permanent solution that replaces existing charities. Or how about those 4 shows that Glen Hansard did in Ireland before and during this building occupation for the purposes of raising money for the Peter McVerry Trust, not Home Sweet Home. Not to mention that the annual Christmas busk will be yet again giving money to either Simon, Focus or PmV, as it has each Christmas.
Sorry if these poke a few holes in De Kloot’s story.
Using Apollo House rather than any other building is actually quite clever.
1. The homeless get a ‘roof over their heads’ for the coldest months.
2. It gets a lot of publicity.
3. it’s not permanent and can’t be (because Apollo House is to be demolished).
4. because of #3 there will be less urgency to kick them out – everyone knows this is temporary.
Come springtime, when Apollo House needs to be emptied, there will be a lot of pressure on DCC to offer equivalent numbers of beds (of a better standard). Come to think of it, DCC should start working on those now – they have 4 months head-start to get them prepared.
Hah! It’s driving the blushirts daft.
Keep it up Glen!
No its not because blueshirts know that these scum will be back where they belong sooner rather than later. They’ll be back to shooting up and robbing people in no time at all.
Irelands banking system has robbed thousands of Euro more than petty criminals ever did
Hurray for everything!
Reading the usual hateful, sneering comments above is what I have come to expect from the regular broadsheet trolls. Its very sad if that is really how some people truly feel. It reminds me of Earl Spencer delivering the eulogy at his sisters funeral when he said of Princess Diana; “I don’t think she ever understood why her genuinely good intentions were sneered at by the media, why there appeared to be a permanent quest on their behalf to bring her down. It is baffling. My own and only explanation is that genuine goodness is threatening to those at the opposite end of the moral spectrum.” I have read a lot in the last number of days about civil disobedience. Civil disobedience is not our problem. Our problem is civil obedience. Our problem is that people all over this country have obeyed the dictates of inepth politicians for too long and thousands have suffered because of this obedience…Our problem is that people are obedient all over the world in the face of poverty and starvation and stupidity, and war, and cruelty. Our problem is that people are obedient while the jails are full of petty thieves… (and) the grand thieves are running the country. That’s our problem. I hope this movement takes off in other areas too. It may not be a long term solution but it’s way more then what’s currently being done. I’m sure the legal eagles will eventually clear it out and move the occupants on with their court orders but if it allows someone to feel human for even a short period over the Xmas then it has been worth it. It might even shame our politicians into finally taking some meaningful action to ending homelessness once and for all. Happy Xmas to you all.
and many happy returns dude. well said.
I hope this is at least being used by genuine homeless and not the hundreds of professional beggars on the streets of Dublin
fair dues.
Occupied by a bunch of skangers, lowlifes and junkie scumbags. There’s a reason these knackers are homeless and it’s got nothing to do with the government or anyone, it’s down to their own bad choices in life.
Thats a very low remark Bill. Wash out your keyboard now!
+1.
These guys are looking for a free pass on life. They need to face up to their own responsibilities and stop blaming everyone else.
Here’s an idea, why not let these people stay here for a few months so they can use it as an address and then they can get a job. The ones who haven’t bothered shouldn’t be helped but the ones who do make the effort will then be able to pay for their own accommodation or can be temp housed until they can afford to pay their own way like everyone else is expectations do to. Nobody deserves a house for free just because they have a sob story or have 7 kids and are supposedly single but pregnant with an eight.
Fair play to Glen and the other musicians. While I’m not a fan of his I think that drawing huge attention to the plight of the homeless during this crisis is important. Irish people need to break more laws regarding housing and double standards, the damage they do is minute compared to the outright robbing of people and treachery of the banking sector/Central Bank with regards to mortgage fraud. Of course in Ireland white collar crime gets NO punishment. FG really are the most digusting party in the country, followed by FF.
Ireland is corrupt and dysfunctional.
Good to know you’re not a fan of his.
I love how in a distant crowd everyone is unrecognisable except mattress mick, you could see that fella from a satellite
Fair play lads, a roof over their heads is more important than the fact this is breaking the law. Just because something is law doesn’t make it morally right.
Congratulations to the organisers for a sublime act of awareness raising
Go away doom-mongers and especially the assholes who complain about the ‘professional’ charities being usurped here. Dung-beetles the lot of them.
