Pro Choice protesters (left) face off against Pro Life campigners outside Leinster House last night

If you’re waiting to find out the fate
Of the famous amendment called 8
Which can mean life or death
Well don’t hold your breath

Best Waterford Whispers headline this week was: ‘Pro Life Group Not All That Interested In Children Once They’re Born’.

  2. Anomanomanom

Just had an interesting discussion about this. What do broadsheeters think, the discussion was basically should the repeal the 8th be a women only vote as a man cant tell a women what to do their own body especially since men cant have kids so it wont effect them, it from discussion to heated exchange, to which the reply was then surely women of a certain age who can no longer have kids or women who for any reason can’t have kids also should not be allowed vote. Im actually against bought I think everyone should be allowed vote. What do others think.

    1. DeSelby

I would be in favour of a women only vote. That would certainly liberalise abortion laws.

However I suspect that there is absolutely no chance of that very hypothetical vote ever happening.

      1. Cian

Only if women could only abort a female foetus.
If it were a male foetus then that would need to remain illegal – unless men get to vote too!

          1. Cian

newsjustin – they don’t. Which was my point.
You shouldn’t restrict who can vote on abortion to women only, as it does affect both sexes.

          2. And Social Justice For All

So you agree Justin that right to vote on an issue should not be extended on gender grounds alone but only to those affected by the outcome? In that case no need to “exclude” men – just don’t include us – as it’s none of our concern.

          3. And Social Justice For All

Hello cian I knew you’d show up. How did having a baby affect you? Did you get hot flushes love? Hormones raging? Thyroid balance upset?

    2. newsjustin

I think that’s a nonsensical argument – that only women should vote in a constitutional referendum – it’s also, clearly, unconstitutional and never going to happen.

To be fair, I think most pro-choice people would view it as nonsense too.

And, I guess it was written at speed, but “since men can’t have kids” is obviously wrong.

      1. And Social Justice For All

Maybe the campaign should then be to persuade men to not vote. That would really put the frighteners on you paedo apologists

    3. mildred st. meadowlark

      That sounds patently ridiculous.

I’m not gay, and by that rule, I shouldn’t have voted in the marriage ref.

What would be the point of asking, if all you were going be asking is a specific group of people, expecting a specific answer to the question.

I’m a pro-choice myself, but I cannot see the use in excluding voices from the debate, even if I don’t agree with them.

      1. And Social Justice For All

I can if they’re uninformed or don’t really care either way. But it should not be coerced

    4. Spaghetti Hoop

You really need to go back and re-read your Constitution….try the bit that grants equal voting rights to all citizens.

      1. And Social Justice For All

Try the bit that actively persuades men to opt out of exercise of their franchise on stuff that doesn’t really matter or affect them at all

  3. Nigel

    Well,
    a) It’s stupid that the entire country might be voting on a private medical procedure.
    b) You can’t restrict the franchise, nor should you, unless you appeal to men to recuse themselves voluntarily, which wouldn’t work because anti-choice men would simply ignore the call.
    c) ‘Men shouldn’t have a vote on this issue’ is getting it wrong; it shouldn’t be a vote at all – but setting the right to choose against the right to vote is putting fundamental civil rights in competition with each other. If it wasn’t a thought exercise, but an actual possibility, it’d be really dangerous and divisive.

    1. newsjustin

“…setting the right to choose against the right to vote is putting fundamental civil rights in competition with each other.”

Yeah, I have some bad news for you Nigel. So is setting the right to choose against the right to life. That’s what makes this such a terribly contentious issue tbf.

      1. mildred st. meadowlark

Versus the right to full bodily autonomy, something women in this country have never actually had.

Its not just about a *potential* life, it’s about giving the woman -the carrier of the potential life- the choice.

      2. Nigel

It’s a woman’s choice to make at that stage as to whether the fetus will go on to live or not. I realise people are uncomfortable with women having that kind of power, but at the end of the day anything else is forced pregnancy.

    2. Clampers Outside!

” a) It’s stupid that the entire country might be voting on a private medical procedure. ”

Too simplistic. It’s abortion. Assisted suicide is a medical procedure too. Feckin’ about with genes is just medical procedure…. and so on.

      1. And Social Justice For All

No. It’s just too simplistic for creeps and cretins like you who want to argue over the time of day. You and your ilk with your endless uninformed or in your case informed by breitbart, infowars etc are exactly what is wrong with this country and why meaningful reforms take so long to effect. Just stay out of stuff you don’t understand please – the adults are talking now.

        1. And Social Justice For All

Or go listen to Newstalk, Hookie will be on soon and you can send your ignorant comments into him

          1. And Social Justice For All

            Lol

            You’re funny Hoop

Did you reply to my question about corruption in Kenya!? I can’t remember what thread it was in

        2. Clampers Outside!

And Social Justice For All says….. to great laughter, a raised eyebrow and a smirk…

” No. It’s just too simplistic for creeps and cretins like you who want to argue over the time of day. The LOLs I got from this were brilliant :) If words could come to life and read in 3D I’m sure I’d have seen the spittle jumping out from the screen after you typed that with fury … I am what is wrong with this country says you….. LOL!

Will you do me again tho, but try be a bit more encompassing next time. I didn’t get the full gamut in that last one, just the spittle.

You do know that social justice is inevitably regressive when applied across the board. You should look into that you angry little muppet…. your comments in this thread are laughable.

” Wow Nigel! Possibly your best ever comment which is saying something considering the consistently high quality of your content! ” …GUFFFFFAWWW!

” Wow we really needed to know what you think. You’re so reserved normally. ” You do realise you are on a public open blog / forum darling. And I love how you speak for everyone else on this site. You with your ‘royal we’…. pffft !
More LOLs for me at least :)

          1. Lord Snowflakee

Permit me to observe you seem to take criticism of your positions (some of which are quite outlandish) very personally Clampers. In particular from this guy ‘social justice’ (an obvious troll if ever there was one) and Nigel (an even worse one) seem to really have your number. But why do you let them get to you like this? Is it because there is a grain of truth in their criticisms (the broadsheet collective wondered)?

Either way the puerile way you choose to respond makes you look worse than them!

          2. Clampers Outside!

I only give personal responses when attacked personally.
I responded to this… “creeps and cretins like you” above.

With regard to Nigel…. he has a tendency to get personal in attacks too, although he has improved. …I respond in kind.

            I know… I shouldn’t… but hey, it’s the interwebs :)

          3. And Social Justice For All

You didn’t get my joke about Nigel’s content then? Or rather – you did! I LOLLED too

    3. And Social Justice For All

Wow Nigel! Possibly your best ever comment which is saying something considering the consistently high quality of your content!

You really hit the nail on the head.

      I loved your comment.

However in relation to B I don’t agree. If neutral men were persuaded to stay at home then it means that pro choice people would just have to have higher turnout than the paedo enabling freak brigade. Change the problem!
Will be interesting to see what Lorcan thinks.

    4. rotide

      a) It’s stupid that the entire country might be voting on a private medical procedure.
I would have expected better of you Nigel.

The country WON’T be voting on a medical procedure. The country will be voting to amend a line of text in the constituion which is what is going to make this referendum such a complete poostorm.

A yes vote won’t legalise abortion, a no vote won’t prevent abortions taking place (as they do under current legislation)

  4. Clampers Outside!

I googled the poster headline as I cannot see the pic in the image…. “dead 11 week fetus moments after abortion” and clicked on ‘images’.

    I’m still pro-choice.

    1. And Social Justice For All

Wow we really needed to know what you think. You’re so reserved normally.

      1. Daisy Chainsaw

What’s “anti life” about wanting to ensure that actual sentient women and girls have access to all their healthcare needs and full bodily autonomy to make decisions that affect them? Have you ever heard of a situation where a man, boy or non pregnant woman or girl is denied treatment until the threat to her health only becomes a threat to her life? When was the last time you heard of a man, or boy threatened with a court order to force them to undergo a certain procedure that they don’t want?

There is nothing “anti life” about being pro choice. So called “prolife” policy in this country kills women.

  5. Mourinho

Where do you draw the line?

Masturbation : socially acceptable, though not in public
    Condoms : Socially acceptable
Morning after pill : Social norm, although has a slight stigma
3 days after pill : Morning after pill is 89% effective after 3 days. Somewhat effective up to 5 days.
    1 week after pill : ?
    1 month : ?
    11 weeks : ?
3 year olds : Obstreperous little shits

I was there last night, right up to the gates of leinster house.
The pro-life turn out was pretty pathetic, literally about 6 guys holding 3 signs behind a few Gardai vs thousands of pro-choice supporters.

A lot of the coverage I’ve seen seeks to highlight some sort of protest/counter-protest face-off as if there was some equality in support for both sides of argument. This wasn’t the case.

The pro-life guys were there for the photo-op and it looks like they got it.

    1. mildred st. meadowlark

      Thanks for that.

Was reading about it last night on the journal and it was certainly painted as great stand off between the opposing sides of the debate.

      1. TomCo

I took the day off work to cover the event.
        I was with various groups from 12am – 8pm.

In the hour I took for lunch around 3pm I just caught the tail end of the pro-life demo on Dame St. Again, they hung around for the photos (their own propaganda included) before packing everything up and moving on.

The next pro-life presence I saw was a singular individual at about 6:30pm walking against the pro-choice march down O’Connell street.

At 7:30pm upon reaching the Dail, the same small group from Dame St (pictured above) were stood silently behind gardai to the right side of the main gate.

Personally I’m massively disappointed at the standard of coverage for this event. I haven’t seen a single image demonstrating the sheer scale of the protest march at 5:30pm.

It was clear to me from the lack of pro-life turn out that the tide has finally changed for the better.

I’d love to know who takes all the abortion fetish pictures and videos. I can’t imagine any reputable clinic allowing photographic equipment in the surgery, or a woman taking a few snaps for instagram after the procedure/ I can’t imagine and unreputable clinic allowing evidence of their illegal activities, so they must be either faked, or not the aftermath of an abortion.

It’s some kink though, to go actively looking for those kind of pictures to print on banners!

    1. newsjustin

It’s a medical procedure. I’ve no doubt photos are available as a teaching aid.

I’m not sure why some pro-choice people get hot-under-the-collar about those types of pictures. Obviously I’d prefer if none of these were every made. But if you’re pro-choice, surely you’d be fine looking at the result of an abortion. What is it some pro-choice people describe it as again – “like a heavy period” or “just a clump of cells” no?

      1. Thomas Heade

Pro life groups have a habit of misrepresent the duration of the pregnancy for emotive effect.

        Regardless, it’s a little tasteless isn’t it?
Brain surgery is important and necessary, but I still feel queasy seeing the inside of someone’s head.
