Tony Blair is a warmonger. But shouldn’t people be criticising prince Andrew in that photo also?

“Racism, sexism, homophobia, misogyny, misandry, libel, abuse, bullying, incitement to hatred and hijacking the usernames of other commenters are not. In fairness.”

        +1 Topsy

He absolutely should be punished for the atrocities committed, and the ensuing mess. The double standards are rather sickening.

Most British PMs are warmongers. And almost all of the British establishment supported the war in Iraq.

Most of those criticising Blair now were every bit as gung-ho pro-war back in the day.
Don’t forget he won a general election after the war started.

All this anti-Blair hate is faintly ridiculous in this context.

Blair is a convenient scapegoat because they all feel a bit embarrassed ’cause the war isn’t seen as successful and the Bush love-in seems ridiculous to them only in hindsight.

Is Theresa May married? Does she have children? Is she gay? I genuinely don’t know.
For some reason her personality and relationships are not important, she’s practically anonymous.
(This is in relation to the Varadkar vs Coveney partner photographs, I’m not here all day for the chit-chat but nobody thought to reference our own past Taoisigh and TDs with unconventional arrangements that were largely ignored).

Methinks that if May had maintained her pro-Remain stance we may have learned more of her life and character.

    1. Bertie Blenkinsop

She has no kids, it was a source of controversy in the leadership election iirc.

      1. Deluded

Well then I stand corrected, thank you both.
(… actually I do recall some guff from
Andrea Leadsom for which she apologised)

    2. Listrade

Umm, her personal life has been covered extensively. Once when there was shenanigans over government contracts being awarded to her husband before while she was Minister of Justice (but that’s just the perk of being a Tory Minister) and a major brouhaha over her lack of children when she was running for leadership.

Besides, why would an Irish newspaper cover the personal life of a British PM? How many times did Irish new cover David Cameron’s private life? Not the British papers, the Irish? Maybe a handful, like when he left his kids in the pub by accident.

I really don’t get the comparison between coverage of Varadkar in the Irish news and May in the British.

… because at the time some of the comments here compared us to the American political theatre regarding personality politics, so I wondered how this worked regarding local (even native) politicians.
        Regarding May I am wrong.

‘For some reason her personality and relationships are not important, she’s practically anonymous.’

‘Cept in the media at large that is not true.

She is married to a man, a banker (well actually, an investment relationship manager in the city). They met while studying together in Oxford & were apparently introduced to each other at a Tory Party dance by the former Pakistani PM Benzair Bhutto.

She is childless & apparently/allegedly not by choice. This is something which apparently/allegedly causes her some personal anguish but she rarely speaks about it – until, of course Andrea Leadsom decided to try use that as a apolitical weapon in the Tory leadership election.

By all accounts she is as secretive & politically-focused as you might think, although some confidantes allege a sense of humour.

…that was Blair wasn’t it…he converted just before he slaughtered all those people in Iraq…

          2. classter

Blair converted afterwards but May is not Catholic. She is CoE & her father was a vicar.

That link you shared, Bertie, is behind a paywall.

OK. Just seen something about it online. Gove said she was a catholic. In the same way that Bill Clinton was said to be the first black US president.

          4. Deluded

            Aye, Gove reckons she is…
From the article linked…“The PM’s outlook on life is informed by traditional Anglo-Catholic beliefs that pose a risk to our post-Brexit future” then he starts on about her giving up crisps for Lent.
Maybe she’s a pretend Catholic like the rest of us.

In the name of the late, the great JC. We are to worry about Mrs May being a closet ‘high churcher ‘ and ignore the machinations of the Christian Brothers?? OK so.

  4. DavidT

Those rules about street furniture in The Examiner are just bonkers. Whatever happened to common sense? “Leave enough room for buggies and wheelchairs to get past” is all that’s needed.

    1. Sheik Yahbouti

Common sense went out the window as far back as the PDs, I’m afraid. Remember “Cafe Society”?

      1. DavidT

Often in the towns in the west that have outdoor seating, usually under canopies, there’s plenty of room to get past – but not 1.8 metres.

        I detest these blanket regulations.

What a waste of weekender Front Page real estate

When Katie Hopkins getting that smirk knocked off her face would have given them a great return for it

Hopefully the Sundays will exploit this opportunity
