LJG is more poignant, surreal and witty than Noel Fielding.
Yep
“Last time I had a cheesecake similar to this one, I spent 4 days inside the homemade leather stiletto of a 16th century Venetian prostitute who stole the hearts of all who paid for her services due to her ability to anthropomorphize the memory of their mother to encapsulate the first 3 pets of their father…ARE YE HAVIN’ THAT?!?!”
Joe cool
It’s the end of the bake off. That lad is the unfunniest “comedian” ever
Custo
Mel & Sue are the unfunniest comedians of all time though.
Kieran Nice Young Chap
He peaked with The Mighty Boosh.
Should have changed his shtick after that
mildred st. meadowlark
Yeah, season one of the Boosh is gold.
Great name btw ;)
Scoops Yeah
That’s my memory of the Boosh too. I wouldn’t risk watching it again.
mildred st. meadowlark
It feels jarringly wrong to say this but… you might be right.
Could they not have got Ainsley from ready steady cook or something?
Yep
His innuendo might have been a bit much, even for Channel 4. He’d be trying to throw bell peppers in everything anyway.
mildred st. meadowlark
Nothing wrong with a bit of innuendo. It would be worth it to see him put the moves on Paul Hollywood. And heso would.
The thing about Bake Off is that the bakers are the Stars, and the BBC made sure of that from their 1st Season when it was a tent that Toured, ie Dundee (cake) Sandwich etc. In fact one of my favourite bakers was in S1.
Putting Mary and Paul together was genius, they are Master Craftspersons first, and it is always about the Bake and the Baker for these pros, and are TV personalities only by way of a consequence to their trade. At bit like that lad Fred Dibnah (rip) or Guy Martin.
Mel and Sue just happen to be everyone’s favourite cousin/ reliable neighbour/ kookie sister who both happen to be extremely clever, entertaining, and total non-slebs for Prime Time Telly hosts.
Their relationship is very like Mary and Paul’s in that on its surface it looks a very unlikely partnership; yet they’re successful partners in every sense in that the combo equates to 1+1=3
I think Noel will be great actually, because he’s all of those that Mel and Sue are. And so is Sandi, but she does like to remind people how smart she is, and that irks me. But that’s probably just me.
For Bake off followers like me, I think the reaction will be like mine …….
I’m just dying to know about Noel’s own favourite bakes, his runaway yeast stories etc, the one he always has the makings of, Is he a kneader or a dough hook lad….
And I think Sandi is going to be good with the interesting but useless information stuff.
I also think former runner up Mary Anne Booermans – should be given a regular slot, to do the historic and lost in history Bakes, like stuff that didn’t really come back after rationing etc ; remember the Opera Cake Technical Challenge? Marie Anne introduced that to Paul and Mary and Bake-Offers as a Signature in S2, and then co produced the segment to accompany the technical in S3
The only thing I’m not looking forward to is the Ad breaks. And the obvious product placement and ‘Brought to you by ‘ shyte.
Because that’s what ruined the Irish Bake Off; well that, and that the Bakers themselves were the last thing the Producers wanted the viewers to get to see, hear from and know.
Anyway
That’s just me
Brother Barnabas
Well, hello….look at you with your actual sentences, grammatical structure, subject-pronoun agreement…it’s all there today, Misses Fancy.
I like Sandi, though I’m less enthusiastic about Noel, if I’m honest. I think that Sarah Millican would make a good fit too, but I know she isn’t for everyone.
Love the idea about Mary Anne. She has long been probably my fave baker to come out of Bake Off -the Sachertorte moment alone is wonderful- and the depth of her baking knowledge is just amazing.
Nancy “don’t know if I’m Arthur or Martha t’dsy luv”
What d’ya make of Nadia?
mildred st. meadowlark
I liked her, she was clever, and I’ll freely admit I cried when she won (but it doesn’t take much to set me off) because of Mary getting all emotional and that, but I think the hype around her went a bit mad, not unlike the Selasi thing this year (I was a Jane fan). She deserved to win, did Nadia, because she was better than the other two, but not by much.
You like her? Or were you an Ian fan?
Spaghetti Hoop
Couldn’t hack that Bake Off programme; all about coping with failure and craving for praise, as if a bit of sponge and icing was going to save the world. (Mind you, if I was an older woman, yer man Paul could butter my icing any day).
Now Fred Dibnah and his locomotives….classic TV.
I remember when those eyes hit our screens all the oul wans in Dublin would remark ‘happily married too’. I believe that all changed (I was forced to read that in the hairdressers via their intellectual reading material).
mildred st. meadowlark
T’was shockin stuff at the time. Paul likes the pretty young things, and the fancy cars apparently.
martco
ah now you’re being a bit hard there…
it’s one of the smartest tv programs in recent years, ok the plink ploink music and sometimes over-chirpy mel and sue thing annoys me a bit but it was very decent viewing first couple of series anyway. enjoyed it in the way of antiques roadshow of a Sunday but with some interesting tech things going on for me, I too like the bakery dicipline.
well done on the Fred Dibnah call, I don’t know anyone around me who has a clue who he was, not so sure he was a nice man but an interesting fella and his love of engineering was a joy to watch and non of yer physics doctorates all in his head and hands….did u ever see the original programme that brought him to fame? was about him in his actual job as steeplejack, classic hits TV
while we’re at it go digging for another classic TV series called Faking It….one of the best episodes has what I think is the first sighting of Gordon Ramsay…he takes a lad working in a burger van and trains him up to be a fake chef idea being to see if the chap gets copped out as he tries out in a high falouting fancypants competition….turns out they don’t cop onto him and even better he wins. and Ramsay comes across as a decentish human being all prior his ridiculous telly career…
bertie blenkinsop
Fred was brilliant alright.
You can’t beat someone knowledgeable presenting a show about something they have a passion for.
I think Lucy Worsley is the best thing on television at the moment, she’s fascinating.
Loved how Kenny, when Trump said he hoped to visit Ireland before the end of 2020, instinctively looked at his watch.
“2020, ye say…well we’d want to start making tracks so”
What actually goes on in that eejit’s head?!
Janet, I ate my avatar
tumble weed
Kenny Plank
Who cares about Trump and Kenny? This is a great day for the Irish as the Brits destroy themselves!
martco
that’s some photo of the Blackrock lighthouse where the rescue helicopter went down….leaves no doubt about the scale of things & how difficult conditions rescuers have to operate in

I’ve never seen Bake Off and now that Fielding is involved I never will, he’s a total one trick pony as Simon Amstell showed.

Ainsley is a giddy clown ffs
With his ogling straight to camera and kissy lips
I’m actually surprised to note he’s still on the telly
You might as well out Timmy Mallet in with Paul Hollywood
Ainsley got a fair oul gunk when he went digging his ancestoral past on that who do u think u are programme
Really? What happened?
basically far as I remember it was that he’d assumed his greatx3 grandfather was a slave…turned out HE was the slaver….thud
Oh dear.
I saw something similar when Lisa Bonet did her episode too. Hers was very interesting actually.
Ah Lisa Bonet, Angel Heart, back in the days when Mickey Rourke could appear in ANYTHING and I’d trot along to watch it like a lovesick eejit :)

A woman after my own heart, Frill. Great post.

Cake is, of course, a serious business.
Sashatorte in fact
I’m also a big fan of The Pink Whisk – Ruth Clemens S1
lol Sachatorte indeed
I have a grĂ¡ for Nancy of S5 too.
“The male judge” gets me every time, along with those donuts.

This is the piece of film martco was referring to (7mins) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=945T56ZxFkE
(I was already hooked on his series about Victorian engines)
