More than 14,500 people who were prosecuted for road traffic offences are to have their convictions quashed after gardaí admitted they made a mistake.

Assistant Commissioner in charge of policing has apologised to those who were wrongly convicted because they had either paid the fine or had not been issued with a fixed charge penalty notice.

Senior gardaí have also admitted that gardaí have been exaggerating the drink driving figures for five years up to 2016.

Almost one million cases have been identified where drink driving tests were not carried out even though they had been recorded as having been conducted.

Good times.

    Jesus! WTF!?!

“Senior gardaí have also admitted that gardaí have been exaggerating the drink driving figures for five years up to 2016.”

    The mind boggles

      That’s a no.

We’ll string out investigations until they hit a decent retirement age then shower them with money for the rest of their life as payment for running a totally inept and systemically corrupt club of a force.

So Uncle Gaybo, his Merry men, Lazy Gardai and the resident mob of puritans have been maligning the Irish public for years – for profit and a particular ideology. Sounds about right, and we saps just swallow it. It goes without saying that drink and drug driving are completely unacceptable, but we must beware the idealogues. As I mentioned in another thread, there is no hysteria over unnecessary death and injury caused by negligence in our Hospitals – doesn’t suit the powers that be.

There must be a whistle blower in there some where? This kind of “honesty” from the powers that be is unusual.

Went and looked at the RTE news site on this story.

You’ll all be shocked and surprised to learn that the statement from the Ass’t Commissioner has been changed, so now it reads: “Assistant Commissioner in charge of policing has apologised to those who were wrongly convicted.” Leaving off all the stuff about Porky Pig taking in Fines which then vanish into the ether.

The corruption in the Irish police force is staggering. I think it’s time that a complete overhaul is carried out similar to what was done with the former RUC force in Northern Ireland.

      @ realPolithicks

No disrespect, but the RUC changed in name only – they were renamed the PSNI, nothing else changed. Their religious bias, brutality and core hate of Nationalists remains the same.

Is it just me but are we being ‘normalised’ to ‘scandals’? If this came out 5 or 10 years ago I’d expect a bigger reaction across online/media, seems to be par for the course now. Another shoulder shrug by the people of Ireland.

Boj, I think we’re just punch drunk from scandal after scandal, with no sign of any action whatever being taken on foot of the scandals. People just feel powerless and betrayed.
