‘Getting away with it’ by Electronic 1989 because it kicks the poo out of most of the rest of it all

    1. ivan

it’s a fupping belter of a track but if that’s ‘New Romantic’ then I’m Shakin’ Stevens.

  2. Pat Walsh

While not a purist of this particular musical movement, my favourite track from the New Romanticism, if you will, genre would have to be I Ran (So Far Away) by A Flock of Seagulls. The group also gave their name to a type of hairstyle & were mentioned in Pulp Fiction

Why are so many people saying “while not a purist”? Are they all the same bloke?

‘While not a purist my favourite track from the new Romantic genre would have to be Fade to Grey by Visage because from the song to the singer to the video is is peak New Romanticism. Sung by the late Steve Strange, the doorman at the Blitz club he was central to the ‘movement’, the make up and style in the video is pure New Romanticism.
The video was made by Godley and Creme who also made Girls on Film and Two Tribes videos and who themselves have an extraordinary back catalogue.

        Sorry Clamps!
I learned a lot from the BBC4 documentary on 10CC.
Using that band you can link The Hollies’ Bus Stop and The Yardbrids’ For Your Love to Blur’s Girls and Boys and East 17’s Steam!

        1. Pip

And isn’t there a link between 10cc’s I’m Not In Love – that washy sound – and the reinvention of Clannad – that washy sound. Producer in common?
PS origin of the name 10cc anyone? Matron!

‘While not a purist my favourite track from the new Romantic genre would have to be Ultravox’s “Vienna” because it’s a super dramatic, synth and piano masterpiece.
Gotta feel for them being kept off top spot in the charts by Joe Dolce and “shaddap you face” though!

    1. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

I wish I could drink a slurp of tea out of my black mug with GOLD emblazoned on it, which I bought at the Point when I went to see them a few years ago. I can’t remember when it was: I’m so goddamn old.

        1. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

To be honest, I never drink tea out of it as tea’s for cups.
That’s a whole ‘nother level of old.

  5. Spaghetti Hoop

I love Birneybau2’s choice of ABC.
Duran Duran’s Wild Boys is just brilliant.
Culture Club’s Do you Really want to Hurt Me? = work of art.
While not a purist my favourite track from the new Romantic genre would have to be Belouis Some’s Imagination, because it was a cracking new wave song. I think the video was deemed way too raunchy at the time.

  6. mcgenius

While not a purist my favourite track from the new Romantic genre would have to be “Ghosts” by Japan because, despite the pretty middle class boys in make-up and nice clothes, despite the plinky plonky synths, despite the ever-present dry ice, this is still a mesmerisingly desolate bone chiller of a song.

    1. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

Didn’t he become an MTV presenter? And how about Ray Cokes? I used to like him. He had Naughty Nympho Nina: Davina McCall as his sidekick.
My brain is hurting from all this remembering.

  7. Joxer

While not a purist my favourite track from the new Romantic genre would have to be Ghosts by Japan.Hauntingly beautiful just like David Sylvian

    1. DavidT

Japan yes but it has to be Cantonese Boy. Quintessentially quirky. For a bonus here’s a young Debbie Harry dreamily introducing them:

      https://youtu.be/xrtcZLdujkw

And Mick Karn (RIP) could do more with one single bass note than a whole blurk of bassists playing that Duran Duran puke.

  8. Daisy Chainsaw

Planet Earth by Duran Duran. “some new romantic looking for the TV sound”. The Killers, Arcade Fire and all the bands the youngsters are whinging should be playing EP wouldn’t exist without them… So there!

    1. David

DD went seriously downhill after Planet Earth, exactly like Spandau Ballet shot downhill after To Cut a Long Story Short.

  9. realPolithicks

Lots of votes for Japan today which makes sense as musically they were by far the most talented of the bands that were kicking around at that time. My choice of song would be one of their better known numbers, Gentlemen take Polaroids, which was a track on an album of the same name. I present the album here for your listening pleasure:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiaEQ7cnzT0

    1. backatmemes

      realPolithicks:

The beginning of that track, ‘Gentlemen Take Polaroids’…. it melts my knees every times.
It’s only second to the beginning of ‘Have A Cigar’ by Pink Floyd….
      … no, wait… It’s better…
      ….no wait….

      Gentlemen Take Polaroids by Japan.

      For real(Politricks)

        backatmemes:

I think you may be my long lost twin, Wish You Were Here is my favorite Pink Floyd album of all time. I used to set up the 33⅓’s on my brothers stereo and drift off….a little Japan, Pink Floyd, Kate Bush and Cat Stevens….sweet dreams are made of this…come to think of it, the Eurythmics weren’t bad either.

      2. badatbrokendreams

I dont know how to react…
You started off on the right road, (Japan / Pink Floyd)
Then you took a wrong turn, (Kate Bush)
Then you let go of the steering wheel, (Cat Stevens)

Then you didnt only crash the car… you mentioned E********s.
Dave Clark and the other bloke… Anto Longsocks.

E********s weren’t a band, in the same way that DT isn’t a president.
You know. I know you do.

WHY did you have to mention them?
        WHY???

  10. DavidT

And not new romantic but does anyone remember from the same period the more post-punk Department S singing “Is Vic There?”.

    Cracker.

  11. Damian

‘While not a purist my favourite track from the new Romantic genre would have to be Live it Up by Mental as Anything because it was a great tune back in the day and was first heard on the Crocodile Dundee soundtrack and you can’t get more new age romantic than that.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJ4EWEBibyQ

  12. scottser

While not a purist my favourite track from the new Romantic genre would have to be ‘just can’t get enough’ by depeche mode because DOO-DOO-DADOO-DADOO-DOO-DOO

    1. ivan

Funny you mention The Mode, I’d thought of Only You by Yazoo, or maybe Don’t Go and then wondered was that a bit more on the synthpop side than the New Romantic. I had a pop at somebody above for ‘Getting Away With It’ and yet the song I was thinking that is emblematic of the sound of New Romantic is ‘Enjoy The Silence’.

This, (Just Can’t Get Enough) however, is a Grade A Belter…

  13. Iwerzon

While not a purist my favourite track from the new Romantic genre would have to be Kings of the Wild Frontier because I remember the excitement when I first heard this track and when I saw it played on TOTP well, like most youngsters, I raded me ma’s makeup bag and got the paintbrush out.

  14. Liam

While not a purist my favourite track from the new Romantic genre would have to be “Tainted Love” by Soft Cell because it’s one of the best ever covers/reinterpretations of another artists song, to the extent that many people don’t even realise it is a cover.

For extra synth-based lushness go for the 12″ version which rather than just looping the chorus a few extra times, adds on Soft Cell’s own excellent “Where did our love go” to create a 9 minute medley masterpiece:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGXpDhNAO1Y

    1. bertie blenkinsop

Where did our love go is a cover too Liam.
Having two covers rather than one original composition on the single cost them a fortune at the time.

      1. backatmemes

        Talent is free…
        ….plagiarism comes at a price.

‘New’ Romanticism, (ahem!) was fabricated in a boardroom, executed in broad daylight, and musically murdered by every participant in their own individualistic way.
It was horrible to watch. You wouldn’t believe it….
        Spanners, dressed up as Screwdrivers.

New Romanticism made virgins out of people who should’ve been swinging their Bam-A-Long-A-Ding-Dong, etc.,
made them stay in their own bedrooms, instead of invading other’s…
(In a friend lying way, of course)
and that’s why I think this competition is a bit silly.

You have to have been a loser before you can hope to win.

        Best of luck, everyone.
        You are ALL winners.
        No, seriously. …

I said it before and ill say it again,.. I know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING* about this ‘music’ genre that I’m
prepared to share on a public forum. except to salute that guy who said ‘Gentlemen Take Polaroids’ by Japan…

  15. Joe cool

I would have to be the live aid version of Vienna by ultravox. I was only 7 at the time and just remember hearing midge ure singing it absolutely pitch perfect. memories

  16. EightersGonnaEight

‘While not a purist my favourite track from the new Romantic genre would have to be Planet Earth by Duran Duran because I liked wearing my mother’s lace blouse and sister’s make up.’

    1. backatmemes

This is just my own personal observation, but I think The Associates were crow-barred into the’New Romantic’ realm by their record company. They would’ve been better off working outside of it.
They were too good to succumb to being part of a fad, but show business is a business.

      Talent is a curse.

  17. backatmemes

    mmnhdfhghorry.
I get emotional when I think back to the 80s.
It was a difficult time for me. I have curly hair, and I couldn’t do a thing with it..
I looked like a girl trying to look like a boy trying to look like a girl…etc.

Bad memories…of polished turds with haircuts…

I am much more a kinda Cyber-Techno- Reggae- Scientific- Punky- Disco- Dancing- DJing- Grandaddy since before you were born type of guy.

isthis still switched on. Its great the way it just typess out the words ascyou say them. How much did you say it was?

        – It looks like a learned gentleman, my Squire.

You syphocantic flute.. You were supposed to say it was a mirror.

    2. realPolithicks

Unfortunately I never saw Japan perform live, but I did have the pleasure of see David Sylvian at the Berklee Performance Arts Centre in Boston in 1988. It was a brilliant show..happy days….

    1. backatmemes

Would youever takealong treacherous and dangerous hike my brother.

Bowie didn’t EVER belong to a pre-defined genre, you fool. He created genres.
      It was a different time.
      You wouldn’t get it.
      I won’t explain.

Apart from that, this isnt the one you should be dropping him into. There’s something wong.

      ‘New Romantics’
      – I don’t know whether to laugh or fart.

      1. Otis Blue

        Really?

        Steve Strange, Blitz Kids, Pierrot?

Bowie appropriated all these for the video. And moved on as he always did.

        Prole art threat?

    2. EightersGonnaEight

Deluded. The only New Romantic link here was the appearance of Steve Strange in the video. Otherwise…. not.

    3. realPolithicks

Bowie wasn’t New Romantic, he was in a category all of his own…great song though.

  18. backatmemes

Whoever said ‘Gentlemen Take Polaroids’ first….

    – I wilgive you €25 in INTERNET VOUCHERS IF YOU DONT WIN.
THISIS not a drunkenpromige. I rellymean it.

I see Duran Duran are playing Electric Picnic and already sold out. The boom is back. Sad.

    1. brokendreamsatmemes

      Congratulations, eh, Eighty Eighty matey…
It’s been ages since someone just repeated what was arlready said in the post and tried to pass it off as an opinion.

It’s you and people like you who make this site what it is. An echo-chamber.

      There.
      I said it.

      There.
      I said it.

      There.
      I said…

      there…

      1. Mourning Ireland

She was commenting on the tickets being sold out. Which adds value to the point of fact already made and makes you look like a grade A gobshine.

  20. Upside-down bloke.

I’m not actually a purist myself, but when you ask entrants to begin with the words ‘While not a purist…’

It doesn’t auger well for your endeavour.

    just sayin…

  21. Lorcan Nagle

While not a purist my favourite track from the new Romantic genre would have to be Everything Counts by Depeche Mode because it’s my favourite track on Construction Time Again, which is the point where Depeche mode moved from being a poppy band into one that’s constantly experimenting and changing their sound. Influenced, of course by Einstuerzende Neubauten and other industrial bands, they added harsh mechanical samples and it worked so well. Dave, Alan and Martin’s discordant harmony at the end of the chorus works so well.

I’m specifically going to nominate the live version from 101, because it’s a great performance, and it ends with the crowd chanting “the grabbing hands grab all they can, everything counts in larger amounts”. It’s an amazing moment from an amazing gig.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doNLR8n0F_8

    1. bertie blenkinsop

What do you think of the new album Lorcan?

It’s really grown on me, a serious return to form.

      1. Lorcan Nagle

I’ve only given it a couple of spins so far, but I’m liking it a lot. (Though while I never warmed to Delta Machine, I really liked Songs of the Universe and Playing the Angel so my taste might be suspect here). My wife’s listened to it a lot more and she thinks it’s their best since Ultra.

        1. bertie blenkinsop

She’s right, if you win give the voucher to your wife, you can’t be trusted with it ;)

  22. Karen

While not a purist my favourite track from the new Romantic genre would have to be Tears For Fears ‘Everybody wants to rule the world’, closely followed by their other classic ‘Shout’ because I was born in 1986, so technically don’t remember the Eighties and like to imagine it was exactly like a John Hughes film.
