Meeting of the Joint Committee on the Future Funding of Domestic Water Services last month

Niall O’Connor, on Independent.ie, writes:

Households that “wilfully abuse water or permit wastage” should be prosecuted and have sanctions imposed, according to a draft report being considered by TDs and senators.

The report, seen by Independent.ie, aims to form the basis of a compromise between the main political parties.

…According to the document, circulated to members by committee chairman Pádraig Ó Céidigh, those who waste water should face prosecutions.

The Committee recommends that the Water Services Act 2007 be amended to ensure that those who wilfully abuse water or permit wastage can be prosecuted and that sanctions can be imposed,” the document states.

It also recommends that households that have paid all or some of their bills should be compensated.

Yeah, I mean do us filthy non jacuzzi and non swimming pool owning peasants get an extra allowance on top of our normal useage then? In the interests of equality n’all.

      Really?

“those who wilfully abuse water or permit wastage” should get no sanction?

For the avoidance of error – that remark was not directed at Clampers but was a comment on the proceedings at the Dail committee. I have my own views on these mysterious ‘water wasters’.

The contrived debate about water wasters..

The plan is.. if they say it enough times people will believe it..

          Goebells would be proud

I have to slightly agree with jusayinlike and have him hanging off my every word. You’re hardly going to effectively punish ‘water wasters’ without a dedicated agency with powers of monitoring and enforcement. Like, um, what’s it called…

Can I be hanging slightly to the left though please Nigel, if possible that is..

            yea amirite..???

I’ll be the kitten on that motivational poster: hanging in there. You’ll be hug out to dry. Clampers will be hung for a sheep as for a lamb.

Yes in the warped world of neo liberals that may be true, in reality though your just a centre left straight talker..

            chin up bud..

This kind of has all the potential to become like the current TV licence arrangements. Expensive to enforce, difficult to prove intent and taking up of a lot of District Court time and Garda time.

Since 2015 it has been illegal to smoke in a car with children in it. But no one has yet been prosecuted.

…wasn’t there a priest who had a swimming pool a few years back…I think water was the least of his wilful abuses…

While they’re at that, is there anything to be said for new builds having to include rainwater capture systems to feed toilet cisterns at the very least?
