Model of the new National Maternity Hospital
Patsy McGarry, in The Irish Times, reports:
A religious congregation which has failed to date to provide its share of funds to a redress scheme for institutional abuse victims, is to be given ownership of the new €300 million State-funded National Maternity Hospital.
The Sisters of Charity are the shareholders of the St Vincent’s Healthcare Group which the Department of Health said will be the “sole owner of the new hospital” which is to be built on a site at Elm Park in south Dublin.
The relocation of the hospital from Holles Street to the St Vincent’s hospital campus involves the largest single investment ever made in maternity services in the State.
…A department spokesman said the “autonomy of the national maternity hospital board will be underpinned by reserved powers to ensure clinical and operational independence, and the Minister for Health will hold the power to protect those reserved powers”.

Meanwhile…
@SimonHarrisTD That’s all lovely Simon, but you still haven’t answered my question and you’re not going to, are you 😉 (And now I’m *really* curious…)

Thanks Garthicus
Bertie Ahern (remember him?) gave the religious orders a ridiculous deal and this story pales into insignificance when you look at the deal in it’s entirety.
The properties handed over can’t be used for anything other than their current purpose and will result in the state having to pay millions to main them.
Most of the land handed over consists of playing field attached to schools which will continue to be used by the religious order, therefore no benefits will be achieved by the State.
21st century hospital governed by 3rd century superstitions. Expect more dead women and babies as “best medical practice” gets trumped by “god’s will”.
…poor Savita…they are still mocking her
I always thought this was weird, even down to college-educated medically trained nurses going through a “Blessing of the Hands” ceremony as part of their degree. I’ve asked some nursing friends about it and they saw it as completely necessary, mind boggling
what’s this madness ?
I’m sure they won’t tell a distressed mother that they won’t be given a medical procedure because of this being a catholic country/hospital/ward etc..
What’s the logic behind this? If the state built it, why are they giving it away?
Because, much like in the states, society hasn’t really moved on since the 50s bar some lip service here and there. We’re still an archaic, gutless bunch of selfish mé féiners who will step on anyone to feel like we’re part of the elite, or we’ll watch in silence as someone else gets stepped on because they don’t want the hassle. The Church still helps govern this country.
So what’s the justification for giving that much public money to a charity and letting them be the ‘sole owner’ of the resulting infrastructure?
Specific issues with Catholic nuns aside
“A religious congregation which has failed to date to provide its share of funds to a redress scheme for institutional abuse victims, is to be given ownership of the new €300 million State-funded National Maternity Hospital.”
You can’t make this poo up. This post should be linked back to the one about how corrupt the Irish government is.
FFS I didn’t even spell the word out fully and still you replace it with “poo”. Honestly you’re like a bunch of 9 year olds at times.
I feel your pain, Real. I had believed this site was for adults – not so, apparently.
I don’t get it, myself. It’s not like they’d be putting substantial advertising deals at risk with some “bad” language.
The really weird aspect to this is that there can’t be more than a handful of nuns left in this organisation.
And they don’t pay any tax because they are a charity
Dan, that’s an aspect which has troubled me. An ever diminishing number of Nuns gather an ever increasing pile of money?? Does it go straight to Frankie the man and his posse, to maintain their lavish lifestyle, or what?
What the actual feck.
Marian Keyes is great, though.
They sure now how to do business that shower
less rosaries more abacus I say
The more I think about it the more infuriating this becomes. This is a sick joke.
Are the nuns not dying out? Who in this day an age takes a career path through the clergy.
What everyone fails to realise is that the only hospital on the Vincents campus that counts is Vincents Private. Vincents Public and the new Maternity hospital will exist to serve it. The HSE CEO had it right when he described the relationship of the public facilities with Vincents Private as “parasitic”.
+1
I don’t get this country
And that Harris lad should go…involving a religious order in anything to do with health care should be inconsiderable
Go, Marian.
And he seems to think that ‘lean’ is the correct spelling, too. Pah.
The next time an Irish government has a ‘lean’ on the religious orders will be the first.
“Lean” lien
Harris really is dumb
What the fupp do these people need to do before we stop putting our precious resources into their grubby hands? Seriously, if they lined their victims up along O’Connell Street and shot them in plain sight they’d still get away with no more than a tut-tut and a fat cheque. This is treason.
True. If the Holocaust had happened here, Hitler would be living on a fat pension making regular appearances on Marian Finucane.
That’s hilarious
The holy nuns.
This is one sick little country under Fine Gael and Fianna Fail.
More of the usual Catholic Church bashing on here. Pathetic really. Without the religious orders thed be no health system or education system in this country. If the state wants to own something they need to buy it at market price, the same as anyone else. The nuns own the St Vincent’s Site.
I’m pretty sure we would have scraped some form of health and education system together without the Catholic Church. Other countries have managed.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catholic_Church_and_health_care
They manage 26% of the world’s health care, I’m sure that’d have been higher in the past… and without it, a lot of us wouldn’t be here, in fairness.
possibly without it, then the state would step up and provide it.
natural abhors a vacume,
I guess I ment as humans we would have both without religion
A lot of kids and a lot of women paid a horrendous price for it.
Fupp the nuns.
Surely, Without the religious orders there’d be less child rapes and abuse in this country.
They’re all corrupt.
Marian Keyes is absolutely right: why not take the land from the order in lieu of redress payment they have not made and will not make. Why give it to the nuns at all?
A commenter on the horribly hilarious Waterford Whispers News satire on this (“Religious Order That Won’t Pay Abuse Victims Perfect To Run New Maternity Hospital”) suggests “How do I go about starting a petition to get it named Savita Halappanavar Memorial? I am deadly – fiercely – serious about this. Anyone else on board?”
I’m with you, Turgenev. Let’s get on to ‘Uplift ‘ right away :-)
Marian Keyes is bang on. This really is more of the Official ireland BS we saw with Angela Kerrins being bailed out, NAMA, you name it.
The Nuns? Seriously? Oh, but hey that’s OK there will be dhrink next Good Friday so move on, we’re all modern Europeans, not like those Brits no sir, not a hint of Church Puppetmastery or “Is leor nod don eolach”, no sor.
Fuppin’ Mickey-dodging penguin nazis. Burn down a few convents and even up the score.
And, once the birds of pray eventually die off, who owns it? Probably some lay people, installed by Fianna Gael, Fine Fáil or Labwhore. Sister O Brien, Sisten Kerins etcetera.
