Denise Kieran has set up a petition (above) on Uplift against the Sisters of Charity gaining ‘sole ownership’ of the new National Maternity Hospital.
It already has just under 70,000 signatures.
Denise writes:
The Sisters of Charity is one of 18 residential institutions that is highlighted by the Ryan report 2009 to have been responsible for child abuse.
They still owe €3 million to the redress scheme for its survivors. The Sisters of Charity, along with three other religious congregations, were responsible for the management of Magdalene Laundries.
In 2013 they stated they would not be making ANY contributions to the State redress scheme to the women who had been subject abuse in the Magdalene Laundries.
The Department of Health now want to give ‘sole’ ownership of the new €300 million State-funded National Maternity Hospital.
Deny them ‘sole’ ownership. Demand they formally apologise and pay redress.

Damn you. That was my plan.
And where are my free shoes?
i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again, sign the petiion by all means, but there’s a hierarchy of ‘things politicians take heed of’ and e-petitions and tweets come lower on the list. If you want to make an impact, take five minutes to write a letter and send it. I know there’s the cost of the stamp, I know you’ve to find an envelope, I know it’s a pain in the hoop, but if Simon Harris had (for the sake of argument) 25,000 letters piled up in his office about this, he’d probably be taking a bit more heed. And if each of those people wrote to their local TD as well, and the local TD saw those as potentially lost votes (if you can be motivated to write, you’re possibly motivated to vote against) things might change.
I’m not taking from the achievement of 50,000 odd signatures, btw.
Amen to that sir. Still .. an aul petition with 5 digits against it can’t hurt for raising public awareness.
excellent point Ivan
online petitions are a positive thing but it’s physical form of protest that has proper proper impact, if you want actual action you make a big pile of letters as you’ve said or stand at the gates of Leinster House.
be heard and seen, be the squeaky wheel!!
Good point, perhaps one of the opposition parties or the trade unions could do a template like they do in the UK.
Signed yesterday after the picture caught my eye on Facebook, that’s Sean Ross Abbey, where I was born.
100%, Ivan. Tweets, emails and these petitions are very easy to ignore. Letters and PHONE CALLS are not. Simon’s Dail office phone number is 01-6183805. Ring, get angry and leave a message with the secretary AND a voicemail.
And An Post might be able to keep a few rural post offices open
Signed. thanks Bodger
Done.
Done, fair play for posting Bodger
Signed. Even got hubby to sign it and normally difficult to get him to do these sort of things.
Get him to clean the sink after he’s shaved and then we’ll be impressed.
That. THAT is a source of Bickering in my house.
If I were cruel, I’d rub his nose into those little hairs and maybe he’d learn.
Instead, I resort to endless nagging and he doesn’t learn.
We. Don’t. Talk. About. Him.
Heh.
Mildred can be unintentionally cruel sometimes.
Poor B-Dawg.
“Boys only want love if it’s torture,
Don’t say I didn’t, say I didn’t warn ya”
“The impulse to cruelty is, in many people, almost as violent as the impulse to sexual love – almost as violent and much more mischievous.”
I refer you to Mildred’s description of herself below.
Amazing isn’t she? :)
What ‘little hairs’?
Is this marriage-speak?
Pubes.
She’s a filthy harlot.
A tramp, a shameless hussy, a scarleh woman, a slaaaaaaaag of prodigious proportions.
you forgot Dirty Stopout :)
Crikey, what did I start?!?
a ,”national” maternity hospital been given over like this stinks.does the government run anything?Signed.
Have to remember that when all these powerful nuns are dead, their power & property will transfer to Trusts run by lay groups like Iona who will be every bit as unaccountable and even more willing to wield their power.
That is who we are giving the €300m bargaining chip to, with all of the air-time that comes associated.
thanks
Done. And I’m gone write that letter too.
*opens bureau defiantly*
Gerrup the yaaaaaaaaaaaaaahrd with yer BUREAU.
I read that in a Drogheda accent.
It’s haawd fow de Gahhds but it’s worser for de nuwses.
I know I can’t talk (bad choice of phrase given what I’m going to say) having a Cork accent, but Jaysus — the Drogheda accent really is appalling.
Jaysus…
And I live close enough to Drogheda that I know to avoid it if I don’t want my ears bleeding.

Fantastic :)
Ah ha ha. Ya know me too well Janet.
This whole thing makes me want to weep, the nuns who are refusing to hand over any money for compensation to those they abused in the ‘care’ of their mother and baby homes are being given the national maternity hospital!!!
Has that shower in Leinster House never heard of compulsory purchase orders? If their was any justice they would take the land as part payment of the nun’s debt to the state but sadly I’m guessing that the nuns would then hire expensive lawyers to fight for their ‘rights’ and the tax payer would have to foot the bill.
Why do I hear ‘Banana Republic’ in my head every time I read the Irish news?
the ‘shower’ is supported by your parents’ generation. you’d just have to move out of the country, because it’ll belong to them for the next frightening 30 years at least.
Healthcare in bits, so a 20 year wait I reckon…every cloud eh?
Signed it to, and spread it on twitter.
My God! That is a chilling photo, so creepy.
