Did you stay up?
A warm and nuzzly thank you to ‘Jinx’ Keenan (top) and to, above clockwise from top left: Johnny Keenan, Neil Curran, Caroline McEvoy, Olga Cronin and, not pictured, Mike McGrath Bryan (producer) and Gavin Hennessy (audio/visual effects), our panel on last night’s Broadsheet on the Telly.
You can watch the show in its raw entirety above.
Matters under discussion included the National Maternity Hospital, United Ireland and Mike’s Master’s degree.
Jinx, barking lustily from Johnny’s lair, provided much-needed balance during the panel’s debate on church-state relations.
Arf.
Thanks all.
Last night: Broadsheet on the Telly Tonight
Meanwhile…
The bukes mentioned on the show…
From top: A Challenge To Democracy: Militant Catholicism In Modern Ireland (Maurice Curtis, The Irish History Press) and Nothing is Written In Stone; The Notebooks Of Justin Keating (Barbara Hussey and Anna Kealy, Lilliput).
Who’s the lad in the brown jacket standing in front of Johnny Keenan?
Brings a whole new meaning to Superman’s got Johnny covered
Jinx, dear creature – I see confusion in your eyes. Come to your old Sheik, who will be your friend :-)
sur tis the only way the poor divil can get a word in
I think Jinx was barking at Johnnys assertion that the single most unifying thing in sporting terms on this island is that the two football managers share a suraname, rather than the fact the the rugby team play as one nation.
Barking is right….
Rugby means nothing to me Rotide. It’s an elitist game.
I said the 2 cornerstones of any civilisation ‘are football and music’. They are accessible to everyone.
In Republic Of Ireland and Northern Ireland we might have differences but at least through the power of song we can look at the positives while keeping it real with a nice catchy hook.
You should check it out. You’ll like it but you have to keep face and berate it, because that’s what keeps people like you excited.
ONEILLO

Can you break down what role the pocket forward had in hellenic expansion around the agean?
How about the 4-3-3 vs 4-4-2 debates in the Roman Senate?
You’re talking crap dude.
Our rugby team plays as one nation.
Our cricket team plays as one nation.
Our Hockey team plays as one nation.
Our Boxers box as one nation.
You should go to Windsor park some day and see how that one nation thing holds up. The types that frequent that ground are one of the biggest cons to a united Ireland.
“You’re talking crap dude.”
So pleasant.
“You should go to Windsor park some day”
You should go there some time this century. Times have changed.
“The types that frequent that ground are one of the biggest cons to a united Ireland.”
You’re talking crap dude.
That’s changing man.
I sent the video to every football club on the island in the goodwill of changing that old attitude. There is some great people who support a positive vibe and then unfortunately some bigots on both sides.
I forwarded it to all the media sites and no one picked up on it.
It was just to positive a song to have any impact, I suppose.
Some Rep of Ireland fans say ‘ oh they hate us’.
I feel a follow up coming on
‘Love will bring us to Windsor Park’.
If we want a united Ireland we’re going to have to compromise on some basic things.
‘The fields of Athenry’ doesn’t have any relevance in a football stadium nor does ‘I’m up to my knees in Fenian blood’.
Let’s move forward dude
‘The fields of Athenry’ doesn’t have any relevance in a football stadium”
The Kilmarnock fans sing “Paper Roses” by Marie Osmond
Now THAT’S irrelevant (and utterly fantastic)

I’m a Spurs man but this is beautiful from the Kop back in the day when great music and football went hand in hand.

Good call Bertie
Jinx is the best Dogie in the world. Factarama!
He was neither a help nor a hindrance last night. Just a presence!
Next week he is ( if time allows) going to sing the Eurovision song that Rte and Louis Walsh rejected. It’s called ‘Forever Bro’
On a more serious note I’m looking forward to reading the 2 books John was talking about in relation to the Catholic Church in Ireland.
‘A Challenge To Democracy’ Militant Catholics in Modern Ireland by Maurice Curtis
‘Nothing Is Written In Stone’ by Justin Keating
I really believe we are in a time of radical change and with that change comes real factual information. Don’t close yourself to the facts folks.
Information is Knowledge!
Knowledge is Power!
Power To The Peaceful!
Because Peaceful People Are Reasonable People.
Peace!
It’s quite hard to discern your meaning here.
Do you mean that the unsubstantiated discussion on BSTV is ” real factual information” or are you referring to the books you mentioned (not forgetting the printing press was invented over 500 years ago)?
Next week, Jinx the dog ate my homework.
Wait and see…
Been there ate that. He ate my mathematic log tables and became constipated. Ya know what happen then?
What happened then?
A suppository?
Jinx worked it out with a pencil.
Almost!
Because Jinx’s dew claws kept falling off when he was younger, the vet said it was better to get them removed.
So since then he hasn’t been able to do some things.
His text life has not gone to the dogs and he can’t operate a pencil.
Someone had to work it out for him though.
would you give over
it must be twenty years since you’ve seen your maths tables
24 I think. I’m not good at math. Must be the American in me.
It’s quite hard to discern anything – meaning or otherwise, when Johnny speaks
I just hear a lot of empty slogans and banging on about stuff
What does discern mean? I don’t recognise what your saying me Lord
“unsubstantiated discussion”
Can’t quite get your meaning here myself.
Expand on that Rotsey. What discussions are substantiated in your opinion and how do discussions get substantiated?
I expanded on it below.
“Someone attributed a fact to a broadsheet commentor last night, which is hardly reuters.”
Hardly, but did they say anything that was incorrect?
Or you just whinging for the sake of it?
I’m fairly transparent Rotide. I’m on BS Telly. I say what I feel and (technical blips aside) that usually means railing against the establishment, that imo has fupped up this country.
If you bother to follow the conversation you might learn something in what way this country is heading and how it might be saved.
If you’re not part of the solution then you must be part of the problem.
You should saddle up and come on the telly next Thursday and take this discussion to the next level.
Don’t bother Rottie
Join meself and Batty in the cheap seats
So, I’m not getting Jinx then? :-(
Sheik, Jinx is for everyone’s enjoyment. His eyes are deep but true.
He is a worrier and a warrior. Even though he looks sad and confused he is always in good form and is always eager to please. He just loves people. He is the Jinxmeister
I watched the first 30 mins or so of this last night and again I don’t like to just slag something off without suggesting improvements so here goes.
Again, visually it’s still awful, see previous suggestions.
JR is actually getting much better as a host/mc/moderator but he really needs to challenge people a lot more with what they say. There’s some awful aul rubbish that isn’t even close to factually accurate that slips out when some contributors are in full flow. Someone attributed a fact to a broadsheet commentor last night, which is hardly reuters.
You keep mentioning that things are being ‘debated’ on this. They aren’t. It’s 4 or 5 people in full agreement with each other. Neil on the panel is the closest thing to any sort of dissenting voice. Opposing views and debate are essential when it comes to opinion forming and fully understanding every issue. There are pearls clutched every week about the gender balance, but never ever a single feck given about thought balance.
+1
I know establishment parties isn’t everyone’s cup of tea on the panel but could next weeks subject be “establishment parties are trying and failing but at least they aren’t resorting to waterboarding”
Send a short bio to John and he might let you fix everything.
You’ll have to stay up to nearly 01:00am though… Do you think you can manage that?
Someone attributed a fact to a broadsheet commentor last night
– lol, please tell me the commenter was badatmemes
Here’s a fact for you… The NEXT album from The Fall will be called ‘New Facts Emerge’.
Mad coincidence there.
I hope they use it in the next episode.
oul Batty was in great from last night
himself and meself were having savage craic in the live comments section
I am gutted I missed it now. Feck it anyway.
I’m going ta’ get meself a new shortie nightie n’all
Yeah, join us next week.
It all disappears when the broadcast finishes so you can say anything you like and live to never regret it. You can use sweary words and everything.
It’s great fun.
You might even find out who fancies Neil.
It went a bit wild when he took off his glasses… that’s all I’m sayin’…
Sorry Neil, it was Mike.
You don’t wear glasses.
Yeah, me and Frilly know who fancies Mike, and it’s neither of us.
Tune in to Broadsheet On The Telly on the YouTube every Thursday* and you might find out.
*Next Monday too.
yeah
ye can find me under Johnny
;)
The swanky one
Not the gobby one
Just in case there’s any confusion like
Yeah
But a lad could still screen shoot
Couldn’t they?
Yes! Balance is vital! It is essential that a creationist is given equal time if you ever want to discuss Darwin or evolution or dinosaurs, lads. Also, if you ever discuss Jimmy Savile and his dirty mates, it is only right to have a representative from NAMBLA.
You can’t really expect people to profess views they don’t hold.
This is a show being allowed to develop organically rather than spun.
I have not seen any complaints from people holding different views that they were denied an opportunity on the panel.
On the contrary, Broadsheet seeks new panellists weekly.
The panel reflects the readership generwould be a ally. Insofar as readers have different views, appearing on it would be a great chance for people to put those views forward.
What I see is a sincere and humble show and presenter evolving in an interesting way with panellists who are neither careersists or spin-doctors. Well worth watching.
generally
careerists
*groan*
Shame the edit function hasn’t evolved

@Salmon of Nollaig
I like the calm way you handled the moaners and whingers there. I don’t think I could’ve been as nice to them.
I especially like your last paragraph though. Sums it up nicely..
Thanks Salmon!
you seem to be more knowledgeable than your sister.
Some people don’t like feeling that they’re in a minority of opinion.
A minority in a confederacy of dunces? Sign me up!
back seat drivers spoil the soup or something
Even though I’m a Spurs fan one has to appreciate when great music and great football meet.
