Yesterday.

The International May Day March, organised by the Dublin Council of Trade Unions, took place in Dublin with participants walking from Parnell Square to Liberty Hall.

Eamonn Farrell writes:

[The march] highlighted the homeless crisis and other social issues affecting the lives of trade unionists, the unemployed, immigrants and other sections of society, including Ellie Kisyonbe (above) who protested about the plight of asylum seekers who are not allowed to work.

If social housing is built, the government will need to hire thousands of additional Gardaí and build a few prisons. Social Housing estates = crime.
In any event, I worked and bought my own house and had children when I could afford them, as did hundreds of thousands of others.
Why should people be handed anything for nothing?

    1. MoyestWithExcitement

Ok. You can look after everyone’s kids when their parents become homeless then.

I’m looking at the section that the people in this march represent, those who want everything for nothing.

        1. MoyestWithExcitement

Luckily those people don’t exist. Now, about those children you want to make homeless, what’s your plan for their welfare?

        2. 15p

i think you’ll find it’s the wealthy in this country who want everything for nothing. and they get it too. no country for poor people.

+1 Free labour, subsidies, legislation/protection from competition, but a guy who wants doesn’t want to be homeless but can’t get a job is a leech. Meanwhile, in the free market, ‘Waaaah. I’m a farmer. Gimme gimme gimme.’

    2. diddy

Rubbish. The right cant have it both ways. They want cheap labour but dont supply affordable housing. Wages are not matching the price tag of shelter. Only the gov can solve this IF they get off their idealodgically opposed backsides and do somehting

Why is that the question? The question surely is why do we have a massive homelessness crisis and a swingeing rental market and a housing market that seems to be going straight from bust back to bubble. Sort those out and your ulcerous resentment might abate, or at least get redirected. Meanwhile, there’s a homelessness crisis.

When could you afford them Ollie? circa what year? give us a break down of your salary and housing costs at the time..

Asylum seekers seek asylum. If they are successful they can work, rent property, buy a car, pay taxes, and contribute to Irish society.
    If not, they can leave.

Free house for those who don’t work, over priced rent for those that do work, crippling mortgages for those that work a bit more, tax relief and guaranteed increased profit for those who already own a few houses

    1. ollie

      Exactly Bort.
The solution is to eliminate the first group or move them up to the second group. Reduce rent for the second group, stop the banking rip off for the 3rd group.
By the way, net profits on rental income are very small in Ireland.

I dislike the way the Reds took over May Day. Long before socialism existed the 1st May was the Spring Festival of Beltane / Bealtaine.

Now you might say that ‘s a bit pagan, but it is our culture and something we should celebrate. Indeed, our other cultural festivals are poorly neglected which is a shame. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that cultural tourism is a money spinner, and whereas St Patrick’s Day has a cache of its own, Hallowe’en could be done so much better.

“I dislike the way the Reds took over May Day.”

You’re kidding me, Emre Can got goal of the season!

Irish cultural summit: English Football, Beer, 2 weeks Santa Ponsa and a some form of domestic animal to ride

    Doesn’t say very much…

    1. MoyestWithExcitement

Yeah! Poor people are so uncultured! You’re so much better than they are. Football and beer? Pffft. Peasants.

    2. Jones

      Domestic animal??

I know she’s larger and hairier than most but animal is harsh

    1. MoyestWithExcitement

I want privileged, entitled right wingers who think the world revolves around them to behave like civilised adults but we can’t have everything.

  6. ollie

“Public housing for all”, how does that work exactly?

“The Workers party”, supporting those who won’t work since 1922

      1. ollie

        right wing fantasy slogans?

This country is fupped and will be for a long time because Labour in government screwed us all over.
The same Labour party financially supported by the Unions.
        Ironic!
The answer to the housing crisis isn;t vast swathes of council houses in working class areas, it will be solved by making private housing plentiful and affordable.
Affordable by correct mortgage rates, shared ownership scheme for those who can’t afford to buy outright. Provision of housing that people will respect because they will have skin in the game.

It won;t be solved by Fine Gael, Fianna Fail, Labour or the unions and their supporters.

        1. MoyestWithExcitement

Putting the price of not being homeless in the hands of private speculators is a significant cause for our current mess.

  7. Baffled

It’s ironic to see the left-wing micro-parties continuing to make noise on this issue while their elected councillors are frequently to be found objecting to housing schemes.

    1. Andy

Not really, they’re support bases are never going to be bothered to check council votes, objection letters or public records.

  8. Devine

The problem with Irish lefties is that they’re the most joyless bunch,

Is it any wonder so many end up in the media where they preach their negativity 24/7.

They’ve never quite figured out that the working class don’t want socialism, they want opportunity, money and mobility. Margaret Thatcher sussed that out in the 1980’s. That’s why they overwhelmingly vote for the likes of Fianna Fail since the 1930’s.

  9. Painkiller

Great to see black-block misanthropes out there getting some sunshine with the anarcho-communist flag (black over red). Not that you’d expect SIPTU to care for the colour of the character of their allies but it’s fair to say nobody is better equipped at bringing legitimate rights movements and protests to an abrupt close than those who adopt black-block tactics.

    1. MoyestWithExcitement

Referring to anti fascists as fascists. The new arugment-of-a-12 year old that supporters of right wing fascism like to mindlessly regurgitate.
