march

This afternoon.

Participants in the ‘We Own Our Hospitals’ march, organised by Parents for Choice, Uplift, the National Women’s Council of Ireland and Justice for Magdalenes, make their way from the Garden of Remembrance, Parnell Square, Dublin 1 to Leinster House.

The march coincides with the Uplift petition – currently signed by 103,840 people (above) – against the decision to give sole ownership of the new National Maternity Hospital to the Religious Sisters of Charity.

RTÉ reports that “up to 1,500” people are taking part in the march.

The petition can be signed here

Should be ecupersonical rather than ecuMENical

      #equality #endthepatricarchy

  1. Janet, I ate my avatar

fair play to everyone put there today
enough of the laying back and taking it

    1. Sheik Yahbouti

It was a “scorcha”! :-) I had to take off me anorak. Well done to all – this Government have had it too easy for far too long. Resistance is NOT futile, it must however be sustained.

      1. bertie "The Inexplicable Pleasure" blenkinsop

Ah good aul Scorcha, isn’t she Fionn and Fiachra’s sister?

        1. Sheik Yahbouti

Bertie, you are a cad and a bounder. I feel it incumbent upon me to inform Mildred of this fact. ;-)

        1. Kenny U-Vox Plank

Do you pay tax in the UK? How about becoming a citizen there and voting?

      1. Janet, I ate my avatar

Is that all you’ve got ?

Many other nationalities, as far as I know, still retain their right to vote in their home country, and have not had their votes taken away from them because they choose to live in France.
The law penalises citizens in the exercise of free movement and establishment rights guaranteed by the European Union, in violation of European Law. Believe it or not I pay plenty of tax as an independent.
        Also
Expats abroad pay their taxes at home. There are those who have property and haven’t sold it because they believe they’ll be coming back. They pay taxes on that property.
I find it disconcerting that around 100 countries worldwide don’t allow their citizens this same right. Unsurprisingly, a vast majority of those that bar citizens from casting a ballot are developing countries, including Morocco, Egypt, Turkey, Armenia and Botswana. It needs to change.

        1. Janet, I ate my avatar

          forgive the expat there
immigrant is fine by me too
I’m still an Irish National, Irish passport.

        2. know man is an island

So you don’t pay ANY taxes here but still want the vote? I mean it was a fairly straight question

          1. Janet, I ate my avatar

            paid plenty before I left
will pay again when I return
last time I’m checked I’m an Irish citizen
do you suggest you don’t get the vote on the dole ?

          2. classter

            ‘know man is an island’

Would you strip the unemployed of the vote?

Voting rights are hardly based primarily on taxable income.

          3. know man is an island

Are you two both on horse tranquilisers? People “on the dole” pay thousands of euro in VAT annually, on the Happy Meals and cans of Dutch Gold, big screen TVs and expensive smartphones they consume. When you actually resume paying something here Janet we can give you a say again, until then just quaff your baguette.

          4. Starina

why do you equate a democratic vote with money?? i heard this argument just last week, too, and it’s a complete non-sequiter. not to mention resentful of people who chose to emigrate.

          5. know man is an island

How is it resentful? People who emigrate can still vote here. They are the resentful ones whining about how this tiny island nation can’t set up a personalised polling booth for them on the Champs Elysee so they don’t have to have their garlic eating routines overly disturbed

        3. Lush

          Agree with you Janet.
Very frustrating to watch the French is London, in Dublin and elsewhere, queueing up to cast their votes and not being able to do the same. Yes, I could apply for French citizenship, but it is a long and costly process, the other alternative is to get married to a French national, but that is not on the cards.
As for Ireland, I still have a home there, I still pay taxes. I still have regular dealings with the HSE, the Revenue, the bank; but I have no voice.
We the Irish “ex-pats” are the new disenfranchised.

          1. Janet, I ate my avatar

            well put
it would make a big difference to the vote I’d imagine on more sensitive topics

          2. Eepaneem

Feel the same here. Was very nice to think I was at the march by proxy with my name on that petition!

          3. know man is an island

            Whine whine whine
Oh I love these whiners who move for purely selfish, economic reasons yet always want to put their oar into stuff that doesn’t concern them.
However if you pay taxes etc there is absolutely nothing stopping you coming home to vote is there? Even Kieran NYC votes in the gay referenda

          4. Janet, I ate my avatar

            selfish economic reasons
            selfish you know
            I’m in tears here
take a bow, finely tuned work
( I know know one is that warped but a fine performance )

          5. Bertie "the inexplicable pleasure" Blenkinsop

            That’s a new one –
at the march by proxy :)

            * pours glass of wine, walks dog by proxy *

          6. know man is an island

It would in its bollxksn Janet. For very well meaning but ultimately clueless liberal like yourself who is exiled, there are probably 3/4 clueless Trump supporting mullahs from Bennettsbridge or Ballinaclash getting locked every night of the week in some crappy Irish bar in Yonkers

          7. Janet, I ate my avatar

your faith in humanity is a beautiful thing
            thanks for the well meaning

          8. know man is an island

You know I have a point though Janet. You’ve surely met all those kinds of fellow citizens yourself over the years? Probably in that poohole pub down at the Moulin Rouge, but I digress.

          9. Janet, I ate my avatar

            other takes all sorts
until you have walked in another man’s shoes and all that
there’s even room for you my angry tiny island compatriot

          10. Janet, I ate my avatar

            ahhh it takes all sorts
had a few ill-advised pints in that poohole back in another lifetime

          11. Bob

If you want to vote, move back to Ireland.
Why should those who do not have to deal with the consequences have the right to vote? You may pay property taxes etc, which is just an investment at the moment. Should we let other investments in Ireland held abroad the right to vote?
Why would an ex pat have the right to vote for a politician without having to suffer the consequences? Ex-pats are just a lobby group trying to get a seat at the table.

          12. Janet, I ate my avatar

I suffer the consequences when my family members are directly affected my medieval laws

          13. mildred st. meadowlark

            +1 janet

And fair play to you standing your ground on this against those who would begrudge you your vote.

          14. know man is an island

Standing her ground? So far all we’ve learned is that she wants to be able to vote in Paris because … reasons. My eleven year old can mount stronger arguments than this

          15. Janet, I ate my avatar

actually I’d like all Irish abroad to be able to vote for full impact,
there’s a whole generation who’s voice is not heard thanks to the mismanagement of a country who made emigration a necessary evil for many,
I don’t fly home for the referendums and stick my liberal oar in, I’m lucky enough to be able to do that but what about those further a field
Are you suggesting someone who is in Dubai or Australia for 1 year say shown that have a say in the running of thier country ?

          16. Janet, I ate my avatar

oh and we could vote on line no need for a booth
this is 2017 in the rest of the world

          17. know man is an island

“Made emigration a necessary evil” eh Janet?
Did they bus you out on a cattle truck or coffin ship?

          18. bertie "The Inexplicable Pleasure" blenkinsop

            When is your birthday Janet?
            We’ll get you a new phone :)

  2. eric cartman

“boys will be feminists” – sign made by parent opposing a crazy ideology being imposed on a hospital patients , by imposing a crazy ideology on a child who has no concept of it.

    1. bisted

…dreadful…why didn’t she write ‘boys will be catholics’ like the other 78% of us…

    2. Janet, I ate my avatar

almost as bad as the crazy ideology of Christianity
good news is people can break free from nutty upbringings

    3. Doood

I don’t like the whole thing of putting signs in children’s hands. Hold your own sign and let your kid have their own views when they’re old enough.
They’re the same type of parents that tell you their 4 y.o kids love listening to Leonard Cohen and sigur ros. No they don’t they like peppa pig and picking their nose like every other kid.

      1. Nigel

Parents, let arrogant know-it-alls on the internet tell you how to raise your kids!

        1. know man is an island

Arrogant know it Alls on the internet let Father Nigel tell you where you’re sinning

        2. Doood

Nige, that’s a bit aggressive. Hope you don’t pass that aggression on to little Fionnáun

        3. Janet, I ate my avatar

          exactly
we all try raise our kids with the morals and values we hold dear

      2. Sheikh Yabooti

Agreed. I was sent off to secondary school in the early 80’s with the anti-abortion feet lapel pin on my jumper, with a briefing on its explanation. Outcome was as you would expect for a 13 year old. (Resumes drawing X’s on eyes of classmates in photo. With scalpel.)

        1. Sheik Yahbouti

Howyah me man, good to hear from you. I missed disagreeing with you :-D

          1. know man is an island

Sad. Some lonely out fella talking to some other loser with the same “wacky” username. I thought I’d seen it all in terms of how low the human being could sink on this site to get a cheap laugh: ( see virtually any post by Nigel, Moyest, Bertie or Me!me!me!)

          2. Bertie "the inexplicable pleasure" Blenkinsop

I’m not a lonely OUT fella, the shock would kill my poor Mammy :)

            p.s.
keep spreading your positive vibes you ray of joy :)

          3. know man is an island

While you may well think you’re a great wit Bertie you’re only half right

          4. Bertie "the inexplicable pleasure" Blenkinsop

I know enough to know that arguing on the internet is a loser’s game.
            Stay happy :)

          5. know man is an island

Ah don’t say that now just because the other lad won’t pay you on the back and tell you how your rapier- like wit is all they live for, like I do see several other lonely douchebags doing here from time to time. I mean your reggae-inspired flame war with fellow esteemed commentator and renowned man of letters me!me!me! was surely one of the most significant cultural happenings on this site in living mememememmemory?

          6. mildred st. meadowlark

You missed the Great Bust Up of a few years ago, clearly. Major shockwaves. There’s a wikipedia article on it too.

In other news, why you so cranky this morning?

          7. know man is an island

Not cranky Mildred. Just sick and tired of all the kneejerk reactionary liberal urine

      3. Rob_G

Agreed, Doood. If people had their kids holding signs saying ‘Vote for Marine Le Pen’, I imagine most of the posters would see your point.

        1. Doood

Funny you say that. The last time I was in Paris there was a massive march – I didn’t know it was happening and couldn’t escape it. Over 100,000 people turned up to march against gay couples adopting/parenting.
There were 3/4/5 year old kids walking through the streets with signs that said family = Man woman and children not man man and children . The kids had no idea what was going on I personally, I feel that’s wrong.
What did impress me (despite me strongly disagreeing with them) was the amount of teenagers at the march. They were passionately expressing their views in a peaceful way. I can’t ever remember seeing groups of Irish teens politically active in any way

          1. know man is an island

Yeah the “French” are “no craic” sure! Should have been out knacker drinking in the park

          1. Janet, I ate my avatar

oh you have me huming that south Park song now
sucks on my chocolate salty balls
            earworm

        1. boohoo

Guessing know man is an island was one of the thick kids in school, tried hard but always middle to bottom of the class. boohoo. Lacks wit and a basic grasp of the English language but always first to point out the flaws in others. It must be difficult to be so deluded and unhappy.

          1. know man is an island

Quite the opposite boohoo but hey when you have nothing insightful to say make some dumb comments about how the other lad must have been one of the dumb kids in schoolzzz wow really convincing

  3. sheskin

The rest of Europe must laughing about us,handing over a tax payers funded hospital to a bunch of nuns.

    1. Sheik Yahbouti

In fairness, it’s hysterically funny to any rational person. An even bigger blag than 1970!!!! You have to salute these babes and their advisers. The score of the century. (over the Sheik’s dead body) :'(

      1. Bertie "the inexplicable pleasure" Blenkinsop

        True
They haven’t had a hummable hit since Final Countdown for a start.

    2. Rugbyfan

well seeing as we start each session of parliament with a prayer should they be surprised?

      1. Janet, I ate my avatar

what’s the bets it’s not even the Lords prayer
I’d say the Hail Mary ( ironic )

  4. Kenny U-Vox Plank

I can see Mahony running to the Communications Clinic for PR advice right now. She’ll be in the Daily Mail with some sob story about a child she saves shortly.

    Yawn.

    1. know man is an island

Was there not some of them stories out already? That crap about the lads having to go out to a pub for ice?
