Christ, his bodies not even cold and you’re running a cheap competition around his corpse. Slimey

I really don’t think that’s what they were going for. Taking offense where there’s none to be taken perhaps?

…from Seattle…sure he’s like one of our own…will Zapper be going over for the funeral…

Hmmm. All I wanted to do after Bowie died was talk about his best songs, listen to the songs that made me love him as a young’un and share the ones that changed me. But then again, we all have our own way of saying goodbye. To each their own etc.

Or giving people the opportunity to reminisce about their flannel shirted days of yore and give others a new Spotify list.

Christ, and I was going to express how much I hated grunge.
      *tiptoes backwards silently*

        ye cannea tiptoe in docs
        and as an aside
        the divil boots don’t creak

    4. Moderate THIS!

      Lol

Good grunge style reply though in fairness

“I hate myself and want to die”

The most outstanding song of the Grunge genre is undoubtedly Alice in Chains’ “Rooster” because the subject is treated with a gentle reverence with the choruses rising to an intense roar. (It’s a brilliant tribute to Cantrell’s Dad)

    1. Janet, I ate my avatar

I have narrowed down to a top five through the tassel skirt mists of time

‘The most outstanding song of the Grunge genre is undoubtedly Smells like teen spirit because (adopts moody, disinterested demeanour) it just is, right.’

    1. Tucker Done

There was definitely something special about the buzz that song created in school when it came out

    1. Bodger

On The Buses, it was suggested by a Chris Cornell fan and we make no money from these posts.

      1. On The Buses

        Don’t pass the buck, mate.

Also, If you’re doing a weekly Golden Discs competition and not making money from it, that is just foolish on your part.

          1. On The Buses

I’m a music fan bud and a musician. And I think this is a disgrace. The guy died by suicide two days ago and you are using it is fodder for a competition.

The most outstanding song of the Grunge genre is undoubtedly The Day I Tried To Live because it sums up excellently the depressing cloud overshadowing the grunge scene and how a lot of us feel from day to day and just push on.

    R.I.P Chris Cornell

  5. Rugbyfan

Temple of the Dog. a pure grunge album that anyone with interest in the genre needs to own. Pushing Froward back being the highlight for me.

I was too young, rural and uncool to see the 91/92 Nirvana (Sonic Youth) gigs but after a lot of negotiation with the mother it was agreed for my 17th birthday I could have a trip up the country and a ticket to their RDS gig. Like so many others here those few years were absolutely central to developing my musical tastes and my attitudes and ideas of the world.
Obviously that gig never happened (so my 1st concert experience was instead Feile ’94 which just blew my mind). After I finished my LC that year I took what is now referred to as a gap year. I lived in a chambre de bonne in Paris and had an absolutely incredible time. Every Saturday and Sunday morning at about 7am my neighbour used to blare Whitney Houston’s I Will Always Love You, waking me and adding to my hangover damage. In return I would lean across and press play on my cassette player and reply with the song I had ready and queued up for her; Mudhoney’s I’m Spun.
Over that year I got to see Mudhoney, STP, Beck, Foo Fighters and others live and as now 40 year old it’s impossible for me to hear many of the songs from that period without a shock of nostalgia. I cannot be objective at all to say what is the best of the time but for the purpose of this exercise; The most outstanding song of the Grunge genre is undoubtedly I’m Spun by Mudhoney because nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

The most outstanding song of the Grunge genre is undoubtedly ‘Honey Bucket’ by Melvins because King Buzzo is a god (Kurt Cobain also co-produced, IIRC).

The video is also absolutely hilarious…

The most outstanding song of the grunge genre is undoubtedly The Money Will Roll Right In by Mudhoney because it’s about trying to make a few quid and ride Brooke Shields

  9. Gearóid

Touch Me I’m Sick, by Mudhoney.

    #1 – it introduces a genre-defining album
#2 – a parody of it was sung by Citizen Dick in Singles
#3 – that opening two seconds, before the riff kicks in, but you can hear … anticipation of the strum
    #4 – so dirty

my wave from superunknown was the song i practiced to learn how to play in 5/4 time. soundgarden’s music meant so much emotionally to loads of different people but to me, they were exquisite musical technicians. they were the ‘bar’ when i was starting out getting halfway decent on drums. chris cornell, as well as being an absolutely savage singer was also a criminally under-rated guitarist.

The most outstanding song of the Grunge genre is undoubtedly ”Where Did You Sleep Last Night?” from Nirvana’s MTV Unplugged because it was the beginning of the end of for one of the last ever counter-culture revolutions that was entwined with a musical revolution.
    https://youtu.be/gOZKz_sPM6U
There are more iconic songs and more that represent that era, but the death of Kurt was the death of our icon and that day MTV repeated the Unplugged set several times. It was a callous business decision, but it didn’t matter because it is still one of the best acoustic sets produced. And that last song that has been read into time and time again with the hindsight of those who don’t believe that sometimes sh*t happens and life is crap.
I’d been moving away from that punk rock scene into the Alt Country stuff that was coming through. The Bro’s were taking over grunge (and NuMetal would follow). We’d won the counter-culture war. Our bands were on Top of the Pops. Our parents didn’t get them. Jesus, Dinosaur Jr were on the BBC’s Clothes Show. The 80s were gone and forgotten as were Thatcherism and Reaganism. Clinton was in, Blair would only be a few years later. Then would come Blur and Oasis. A musical revolution our parents liked too. Not the same.
This song stood for the end of it all, not just Kurt or Nirvana. He had moved on, rumours were he was working on a country blues record. Based on this song, his duet with Mark Lanagan on Down in the Dark and the whole Unplugged set, it would have been some record. But we’ll never know. The bands that came through those three years of its peak went off in their own directions. It was over before this, nothing was really like 91-92, but this just seemed to be full stop. The last song on the set. The last song you were left with.
You can’t watch this without hindsight, it was recorded in November and he’d be dead the following April. Few could scream a vocal like him, maybe Black Fancis, but none could silence a whole auditorium full of people with a scream and make them feel his pain. It worked for punk rock, but it worked perfectly here in some simple country blues.

“one of the last ever counter-culture revolutions that was entwined with a musical revolution”
      LOL
Are you including the current counter culture revolution that is entwined with a musical revolution?
Also, your ability to see into the future is very impressive, almost as impressive as your ability to observe the present.

      1. It Won't Stand Up In Court

        tedious drone
almost as boring and ineffectual as the original commenter

  12. Whatevs

The most outstanding song of the grunge era is Bush’ Glycerine because it’s simply poncho and tartan padded shirt levels of grunge.

  13. Rich Uncle Skeleton

‘The most outstanding song of the Grunge genre is undoubtedly ‘You Know You’re Right’ because you know I’m right.

  14. Ciara Mealy

Really uncool to use this as fodder to flog a voucher for Golden Discs. Really, really poor taste.

  15. Marina

I don’t think it’s in bad taste. Good opportunity to appreciate grunge and reminisce as some have shown above. For me it’s confusion by Alice in Chains. Love Sex Pain Confusion Suffering – tell me who’s teens it doesn’t sum up?

    1. Frilly Keane

      ah here
aren’t they giving Bodger a hard time enough as it is
wi’out you bringing up Hunger Strikers
