…but the government feels Enda needs a big pot of money more than these folk.
Zena
An incredibly heartbreaking sight.
Serval
I think it’s a credible one.
Brother Barnabas
But does Enda care?

BB – Not one iota.

Wonder are these the early Leo risers Leo is rooting for? ….. If Leo gets in (which is likely) the inevitable creep to the right will not help these poor individuals, grim times ahead.
Rob_G
They should take a leaf from Erica Fleming’s book: start a big media campaign, turn down offers of accommodation (all the while using their kid as leverage by forcing her live in a hotel room), and then they will be able to pick and choose exactly where their council house should be.
MoyestWithExcitement
Yeah, fupp poor people! They should accept their gruel and be gratuful. Us normies are so much better than them.
Rob_G
Suggest you have a read about Ms. Fleming, and the lovely two-bedroom flat in Clontarf that she decided to turn down in order to keep her burgeoning career as a homelessness campaigner on the go.
MoyestWithExcitement
I will after you explain why only rich people can have the right to live near their family and friends.
Rob_G
Well, people who are buying or renting property are often obliged to make compromises on location; I don’t see why people who are being having their housing needs provided for by taxpayers should get to live exactly where they want, while the taxpayers who pay for this do not enjoy the same privilege.
scottser
if i may?
homeless persons are provided with emergency accommodation according to Sec 10, 1988 Housing Act. The act stipulates that if a person’s circumstances change, that is they are offered a place to reasonably occupy and moreover, have security of tenure, then they can no longer be deemed to be ‘homeless’.
there are just as many who level criticism at a local authority for allowing households deemed to be homeless to turn down reasonable housing allocations as there are those who criticise it for not meeting a homeless household’s expectations.
Yep
Pretty weak to use what is a disturbing pic to take that shot, Rob.
Marina
Link to source about Erica turning down apt please?
Rob_G
In fact, she refused two properties, according to this article:
damn sure she’d a been back in a Hotel room 18/ 24 months from now
Rob_G
She refused because she wanted a council house tenancy, as council house tenancies are for life. Social housing should be on a 2-year, 5-year basis – to allow you time to get back on your feet, find a job, finish your college course, etc. It shouldn’t be that, once you have your social housing, you have your accommodation subsidised by the taxpayer for the rest of your natural life.
But Erica, helped by her SF cronies, ran a very slick campaign, and the squeaky wheel got the grease. She is the epitome of gaming the system.
Anomanomanom
100% agree, iv being saying that for years, apart from it being aimed at an individual, you summed it up perfectly.
Frilly Keane
I think “gaming the System” is a bit too Leo’esque
but she was totally motivated by Self-Interest
and tbf; she’s not the only one

Ah Ms Fleming, while there can be some respect and admiration for her struggles and battles, she has carefully curated her struggles, turning down opportunities when they’ve come her way and when stuff doesn’t suit her she shouts loudest.
She helps re-enforce the entitlement attitude that if it’s someone elses job to make sure you’re looked after.
God IV
Tis an ass you are

Oh no doubt I am, and one who can’t effin type either. That’s not to say what I have written is too far from the truth.
She isn’t some champion of homeless people and the root cause. She comes over as someone for whom any help has to be exactly as he wants it.
Social housing was (and still could be) a wonderful thing in many ways, but has a knock on effect of having later generations knowing the system can be twisted and turned to their needs and they can make a song and dance publicly until they get what they want. It bred an entitlement culture in many.
It also bred an unbreakable ethic in many, people who worked hard and did whatever they could to buy their home or move out of social housing but this has all the hallmarks of, I’m struggling someone bail me out
Sham Bob
You’re struggling with your post? Do you want someone to finish it for you?
Rob_G
It’s very sad that there are homeless people sleeping rough on the streets of Dublin. Maybe Erica should ask her pals in Sinn Féin, who chair DCC’s Housing Committee, to do something about it.
mildred st. meadowlark
Or, y’know maybe the government should pull up their socks and deal with an issue that has been a growing problem, especially in the last 10 years.
Or maybe, even better, we stop using stuff like homelessness as a means to take cheap digs at people like Erica and politicians like Leo, and score points or whatever, and actually deal with the situation.
Coz, really, it doesn’t matter who we apportion the blame to, this is all a load of bollix, and it needs to be dealt with. Homelessness is fiucking awful.
ahjayzis
People like you frothing at the mouth over one person you think might be gaming the system are music to the ears of Noonan and co who’ve fire-saled billions in state assets to foreign rentiers. You’ll pay far more for that crime than any you’re obsessing over here.
Punch up, for once in your life.
Yep
That shot too….
Increasing Displacement
Where’s Rudy Giuliani when you need him, he magics the homeless away… eh Rob?
Eoin
Lot of people sleeping rough by the Dublin canals too I’m told. Tent villages will be popping up next.
Yep
It’s getting there up by Binns bridge in Drumcondra.

Yeah I’ve witnessed a few now on the royal canal working their way out of city.

Lord Snowflakee
Ah now here Mildred there’s plenty of work out there these days for them that wants to have something gainful to do
mildred st. meadowlark
I’m not implying there’s no work.
But it’s harder to get back into work if you’ve been unemployed for a few years. Potential employers see it as a drawback.
It’s an obstacle, it won’t stop people who wish to get out of that situation, but it makes it a whole lot harder.
ahjayzis
Could you hold down a job while sleeping in a street? Where would you wash your clothes? have a shower in the morning? Feed yourself til your first pay check? Be presentable for the several months of living on the street you’ll have to do before you have enough money for a deposit for a room in Dublin?
Moderate THIS!
all you sorts of guys ever want to do is keep the poor poor so you can institutionalise them and make them dependent on the state. For shame!
