I make that 2 mask slips along with Harold, who thinks “we” should be doing more to make Muslims more civilised. Fupp me do I have good self centred bell-end radar.

          1. MoyestWithExcitement

Does that mean I’m gay as well? Thanks be to Panti! Wimmins are so confusings.

        1. Harry Molloy

So you’re saying that Amnesty International is a racist organisation? Bizarre.

    1. classter

      He’s not right.

      It is completely different.

The anger about Catholicism is about how senior Church members still have so much control over publicly-funded bodies – hospitals, schools, etc. They help run influential campaigns to enforce their personal morality – SSM, abortion, etc. – on everybody via the legal system.

I personally know nobody that supports a pro-terrorist form of Islam and tragic as such attacks are, nobody I know has ever been impacted upon by Islamic terrorism. I don’t even know of any mainstream Irish Muslim organisations who would support something like Charlie Hebdo or Manchester attacks.

It’s a sad day in Ireland when we have the likes of this guy to tell it as it is.

    1. MoyestWithExcitement

Good thing he’s not then. Nobody blamed Catholic ideology for burying children in a septic tank. Nobody blamed the bible when the Catholic church protected paeophiles from the police. Nobody said ordinary Catholics should be viewed as potential child rapists or child murderers until they proved themselves not to be.

      1. toptitsmate

Actually yes many did, question the catholic ideology, the increase in secularism and those leaving the churches teaches and beliefs are basically because of that. There’s plenty of backward hateful poo in the bible that people turned away just like the Koran

    1. scottser

it looks like he’s gone full jimmy russell. and we all know, you should never go full jimmy russell…

        1. Andrew

I’m glad you found some solace from it. We need people like you to tell us how it is.

          1. MoyestWithExcitement

Well, I think you need to see a doctor about this “we” business, but you’re welcome.

  2. Casey

    “It’s not Catholicism….. It’s you”

    Ya fuppwitted backwards gombeen gobpooper.

  3. edalicious

On the subject of wasted oxygen, did anyone else see Katie Hopkins “final solution” tweet? She’s really trying very very hard to be noticed, bless her.

    1. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

She wrote a piece in the DM. All nonsense about the establishment being afraid etc etc. No answers, just hate and bigotry. She’s a pox on the bottom of society, that woman.

  4. bisted

…as an atheist I’d like to say that I despise all religions equally but I have to agree with David Quinn…I have a special disdain for christianity in general and catholicism in particular…

  5. ceo

No, not many. Although one Muslim friend recently tried to explain the whole Halal thing to me and it just sounded like more irrational, archaic bells and whistles.

Am I wrong then to assume that Islam in the main is a more conservative than mainstream Catholicism is in Ireland today? Conservative adherence to religious beliefs is, I consider, a danger to society. Maybe I’m wrong about that though.

I consider myself a humanist and when I look at religions at a high-level, Islam seems a bit more up the scale of “nuts” that some of the others.

    1. MoyestWithExcitement

Religion doesn’t cause social conservatism, it justifies it. Your opinions and political ideology are rooted in your emotional base. If you are a ‘naturally’ unhappy person who lacks self awareness and the ability to see things from someone elses point of view, you are *more* likely to view anyone who doesn’t look like you as a 2 dimensional caricature who is either beneath you or a threat to you and so you think poor people are to blame for being poor so you want to gut the welfare state. We have starving children in this country because of myopic and privileged bum bums who want to believe in the existence of a subclass beneath them which benefits nothing but their ego. Religion doesn’t cause hate and division, it justifies the hate and contempt one *already has* for others.

  6. Nigel

Is it just easier to argue about the relative culpability of an entire religion rather than the massive tangled mess of the Middle East which has helped create the violent extremists we’re dealing with today? Because it’s really depressing how the religion part is treated as more important than the mess.

  7. ahjayzis

“Systematic industrial scale rape and abuse of children by Christian leaders is nothing to do with Christianity”

“Why is no one saying the murder of children by Muslims is because of Islam?!”

  8. Nigel

Yes the direct threat is Islamic extremist terrorists, for sure. But the corresponding threat isn’t Catholicism, it’s hard right extremists calling for expulsions, retaliation and final solutions against all Muslims, and who treat anyone who disagrees as quislings, as Hans Brevik did. We’re careful about avoiding any suggestion of condemning Islam as a whole because we want to avoid the kind of escalation that might go with that. People aren’t calling for a final solution against Catholics, or not that I’ve heard.

      1. MoyestWithExcitement

His comment was ‘99% of Muslims are good people but…’ Bodger is just, thankfully, sticking to his ‘no racism’ rule.

          1. MoyestWithExcitement

So you think Rob’s racism should have stayed put? Or you’re ok with Rob’s level or racism?

          2. mildred st. meadowlark

No moyest, he’s talking about double standards.

You’re not thick, stop acting like it.

          3. ceo

I was getting stuck into religion (summary “religions are all nuts but Islam seems a bit more nuts”) and I got my posts removed. I’ll just go back under my rock, or bridge or whatever because I must respect the religions.

          4. MoyestWithExcitement

Sure, because the rational response to seeing racism punished is ‘Whatabout that other guy’s racism?’.

          5. MoyestWithExcitement

“I was getting stuck into religion (summary “religions are all nuts but Islam seems a bit more nuts”)”

Aye, I had a lovely erudite response to that about how religion jusfities, not causes, anger and how your opinions and ideology come from your emotional base so if you aren’t able to see things from other people’s point of view and you’re naturally unhappy, you’re more likely to be right wing and conservative. It was such a good post. Really. I mean, people should be paying me, honestly. But you’ll never see it.

          6. mildred st. meadowlark

I think you enjoy disagreeing with me.

I’ll be your friend if you ask, you know. You don’t have to pull my hair to get my attention, sweetie.

          7. Nigel

Rob’s always struck me as reasonable and decent, I figured he might be open to the point of view that he was making a category error. Never mind.

          8. MoyestWithExcitement

Well you two share some opinions and attitudes, one notable one in particular, so that’s not surprising.

          9. ceo

“about how religion jusfities, not causes, anger” Yeah, actually, that makes sense, it’s not the religion that’s causing these guys to go postal, the religious element is just poured on top of their existing anger, got ya. But still, I think if you are likely to believe the irrational tenets of a religion, you might be more likely to do something stupid at some point, particularly if you have it drilled into you from a young age. Maybe I am being unfair on people who believe in these things, but society should be allowed to critisize them right? What’s wrong with criticizing religions, Islam or others? And I admit my comments were crude and irreverent, as opposed to serious, but this is Broadsheet after all.

          10. MoyestWithExcitement

“But still, I think if you are likely to believe the irrational tenets of a religion, you might be more likely to do something stupid at some point”

Do you think it’s a coincidence that churches are most powerful and most visibile in areas of social deprivation? I see ads for religious shops and God quotes on busses in Tallaght. I don’t see those in Ballsbridge. I see the Catholic Church having huge influence over society in South America and Africa (AIDS spread because they were told condoms are sinful). I see less church influence over society in northern Europe. I also see the US and UK military recruit lots of kids from socially disadvantaged areas, less from well off areas. Don’t you think someone with little to no education is more likely to belileve in dogma, religious or otherwise (patriotism for instance)?

          11. ceo

OK Moyest, you are winning me over on the social aspects argument. However, I am still a bit suspicious of my middle-class friends who are overtly religious. I include my wife in that bucket.

          12. MoyestWithExcitement

“I am still a bit suspicious of my middle-class friends who are overtly religious.”

Sure, not everyone is into religion for the same reason. Some people don’t know any better because they worked from the age of 10 instead of going to school. Some other people like to think they’re superior to others and religion scratches that itch. They are Good People and gays are dirty sinners, for instance. Everyone does everything to satisfy a feeling. Eating makes you feel satiated. Having a job, even if you don’t like it, makes you feel like you have worth to society. It also gives you a feeling of security; that’ll you’ll be able to continue eating and living under a roof for the forseeable. Your friends are looking to religion to satisfy a feeling. I don’t know your friends. Maybe they want to feel superior, as I said. Maybe they don’t feel sure that anyone truly loves them and God guarantees them love. I mean, they’re imagining it, obviously, but if it works for them, it works.

          13. ceo

I get you. Well we won’t solve it today. It’s complex for sure. I think a lot of people found this attack particularly difficult considering the demographic targeted. I have an 8-year-old myself and had to try and explain it to her. It’s tough having to open this Pandora’s box that is the world to your kid.

          14. classter

The idea that the Church’s proscriptions on condoms is the primary or even a primary reason for the spread of AIDS seems rather weak to me.

Did we really believe that large numbers of people are faithfully following the Church’s line on condoms but ignoring it on promiscuity and extra-marital sex?

        1. MoyestWithExcitement

LOL! Yes, those poor oppressed Catholics. I always knew this about you but it’s quite satisfying to see it confirmed.

          1. Rob_G

Debating with you is really like playing chess with a pigeon…

It is a widely-observed phenomenon: South Park, for example, regularly lampoons world religions. It had a very, very tame reference to *that other Abrahamic religion* (so I don’t get moderated again), and the network refused to show it.

          2. MoyestWithExcitement

Yes, obviously you would reference South Park here. Obviously. You and Clamps are going to get on great.

  9. Ultan

What would be more accurate was to criticise Saudi Arabia, the home of Wahhabiism, not all of Islam.

  10. Listrade

Problem you have is using “Catholic” vs “Muslims”. So the Islam is judged as a whole, but you ignore the entirety of Christianity and focus on one denomination. Semantics, but important.

“Christian” extremists are pretty damned dangerous too and you can find them across the world, all responsible for numerous deaths and attacks. The lord’s resistance army, the concerned Christians, The Phineas Priesthood (not sure why Ferb doesn’t get a look in), Church of the Almighty God, The Army of God, etc. All active. All responsible for actual deaths or attempted attacks in US, Africa and Asia.

It’s a bit more than waving a banner about hating gays.

Anyway, 0.01% of muslims as the problem would mean about 180,000 people. I’m not sure if that’s sounds about right. Seems a bit on the high side to me. I guess we don’t know as there isn’t a register for religious extremists who intend to do harm. Either way, we could fit all 180,000 into County Cork. Just saying.

  11. Jake38

I see BS felt my (true) statement was too dangerous to post. As Trump says, ….sad.

    1. MoyestWithExcitement

You don’t actually know what Jihad means, do you. That’s probably why it was pulled. But you continue to tell yourself you’re some sort of martyr for free speech sticking it to the oppressor…by posting ignorant bad takes about Islam on an Irish blog.

      1. nellyb

In fairness it’s a universal malaise. People conflate word and action – that’s precisely what Quinn is doing and hoping we take the bait. And we did, to broadsheet’s delight :-)
Media can’t be @r$ed to write niche theological pieces (i.e. writing about Catholicism), for a reason that it doesn’t sell papers. But media did cover inhumane acts committed by PEOPLE CALLING themselves Catholic and being in employ of the church.
Quinn is the most unimaginative spinner IONA could have :-) Hope he retires when Ben C. is back with degree. It’ll be a lot more interesting then.

  12. Pablo Pistachio

Poor Quinn. His imaginary God is definitely better than the thousands of others floating around in the sky up there.
I’d have thought Quinn would love a bit of Islam. Sure they’re practically the same thing as his made up religion.

  13. Peter Dempsey

“My thoughts are with the families of the dead and injured. An appalling act. The people who carried it out are bad.”

Not that hard to say is it?

    1. MoyestWithExcitement

You would think but fragile attention starved right wingers like Quinn always worry about how a tragedy that had nothing to them actually victimises them.

  14. Junkface

Thats true, Catholics and Protestants were at war for 100 years in Europe in the 16th Century. Very violent. As I said, All relgions are idiotic.
