BREAKING: Tá 57, Níl 50. Leo Varadkar is nominated as Taoiseach.
— Gavan Reilly (@gavreilly) June 14, 2017
Update:
In his first speech as Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar said:
“I don’t wish to respond to the other deputies, as suffice to just say this: I received 57 votes here today, only two of those 57 were allowed to speak opposite 40 members chose to abstain, but only one of them was allowed to explain why.
“And so it’s important to democracy that we have diversity but democracy is also about proportionality and the equal right to speak must also apply…
Applause from Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil benches
“…so the equal right to speak must also apply to ministers and backbenchers of this party and also the main opposition party.”
Yesterday: New Old Politics
So the FF an FG are going ahead with their plans to silence the other parties then. If you’re not genuinely angry, you’re part of the problem.
Apparently by attempting to silence the smaller parties they will actually be making things more “democratic”. What a country.
Maybe dennis asked them , it will free up the courts time for sure
“I don’t wish to respond to the other deputies, as suffice to just say this: I received 57 votes here today, only two of those 57 were allowed to speak opposite 40 members chose to abstain, but only one of them was allowed to explain why.”
‘Waaaaaah. It’s not fair.’
“And so it’s important to democracy that we have diversity but democracy is also about proportionality and the equal right to speak must also apply…”
And here he dresses up the personal offence he has taken as selfless concern for others. And it’s his first speech! He’s doing this in his first speech. This man is our Trump. An spoilt child who wants power and will pretend it’s all about prinicples. And we don’t have any real opposition party. We’re in trouble.
Patience my friend…the chaos will come! However this guy is no Trump! Trump is a clown.
“trubble at’ mill” indeed. Revolution, anyone??
A weapon of unelected destruction.
This post is literally about his election…
Plus he had to be elected by the people to even be considered for this election…
you mean like the former unelected deputy leader james reilly?
Cheezuz
I’ve a pain me botty already
there too
how dare they..
better than a pain in your jumper puppies*
*yes we know they’re t*ts..and you as a woman should be allowed say t*ts..the cheek of them. mysoginists..n hillary clinton has jumper puppies too. mysoginininists.
…in fairness…he seems to have started the way he means to go on…FG/FF have never been closer than they are today…
Not even before the Civil War when they were all one big happy Brit-shooting party?
…that’s right…when they were all in the IRA…
Dev and Collins would often shoot the poo. In 20ish Ireland, there was just Dev, Collins and The Communist Party , oh and The British Government.. Hmm! – It’s turned out swell!
Sorry I said originally, “shoot the s**t”, shooting poo, somehow doesn’t translate well?
Perhaps, by way of protest, independents should refuse to disclose their questions to the government in advance of raising them in the house?
Not having access to scripted responses from the civil service would certainly have a few Ministers hot under the collar.
Don’t the rules say they don’t have to answer questions unless pit to them in writing beforehand?
+1
– it would actually make things easier for the sitting govt; they could just answer every question “sorry, don’t know off the top of my head; you can submit a written question to the department”.
Ok. So an opposition TD asks a question that is specific to a minister who is clearly in a position to answer on the spot, but it is not in their interest to do so without advance notice so they can come up with some bs response… “Eh sorry, I don’t know off the top of my head. Ask the department in writing”.
Yes.
How could you establish that they “are clearly in a position to answer on the spot”? Some Minister’s briefs are vast; it would give them a get-out-of-jail card for tricky questions. If they know the question in advance, they have no excuse not to have an answer.
This is how you get a two party system.
More like a one party system I’d say.
And there’s the rub. The question is, for how much longer can we/should we tolerate this?
I actually think I might dislike Leo more than Enda…
It must have something to do with them being Taoiseach… become Taoiseach, turn into an arse.
Mildred, Leo was always a self promoting arse. His only interest is power (and access to the moneymen who can make him seriously rich) – he has no interest whatever in what goes on in this country – I say this as someone who preferred HIM over Coveney. You might surmise what my opinion of Coveney is.
Ah tbf he absolutely rinsed Adams earlier in the Dail. The lolz
Please include Indian news: http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/mumbai/kin-of-leo-varadkar-set-to-be-ireland-pm-celebrate/article18710559.ece
My Indian colleague was so excited about Mumbai Leo yet her smile dropped dramatically when I informed he was gay. My more devastating news that he was a blueshirt lost significance after that bomb.
That article states he’s openly gay..so I doubt her smile dropped.
It’d be well publicised.
I was informed by someone out east the Kar in the surname tells you what town he’s from in the prefix before the Kar bit..
So his family are from Varad..only something like 130 million people there…
I presumed the person in India I was having the discussion with would have known about his sexuality. It wasn’t mentioned though.. but he still seemed very happy about Leo’s rise to power.
Since FF support the government and keep them in power, how can they be
described as the opposition and Leo is only interested in himself and how he
can project his ego, as for Ireland Inc…..forget it:
