You don’t get anything for nothing.
Unless you rule a tax haven, inherit hotels, etc.
“According to his daughter, (Princess) Grace, he had a very simple view of life. It was: ‘You don’t get anything for nothing. Everything has to be earned, through work, persistence and honesty.’
“That message could be the slogan for the kind of Ireland I believe in, and which my government is working to achieve.”

You don’t get anything for nothing’ – Varadkar’s new slogan (Irish Independent, Saturday, June 24)

Am assuming Prince Ranier was there in spirit.

I & I will liberate Offaly
Right so…. close down the tidy towns, community halls and don’t even glance at your neighbour if they ask you for a hand with something. Its sad to see the country becoming such a self serving greedy nation.
‘ close down the tidy towns’
Huh?
Unless you are a minster with your snout deep in the trough, then you get lots of things for nothing, travel expenses, chauffeur, state car, junkets, tickets to the All-Ireland and all the rest. Many people work their backsides off, they persist day in and day out and what do they get, ripped off at every opportunity, a 3 bed semi-d for over E400,000. Yeah OK Leo, nice rhetoric.

what a naughty pants
Are you saying he doesn’t work hard? They are the perks of the job. If you wish to have those perks, persue a career in politics. Literally the only thing stopping you is your own ability.
You could of course say that you don’t want a job in politics. However then you are also saying that you don’t want the travel expenses, chauffeur, state car, junkets, tickets to the All-Ireland and all the rest.
Lots of people work hard. Lots of people do horrible, menial jobs for 40 hours a week. Where are there travel expenses, free cars, free drivers, daily pocket money allowances and tickets to social events?
*60 hour weeks. And more.
You think that because person A recieves X renumeration, Person B doing a completely different job should also recieve X renumaration?
Is that really what you are saying?
I’m saying Leo gets loads of free stuff on top of his wage. Free stuff that we all pay for. Free stuff that few other workers get on top of their wages. Good God, man.
Or maybe Fianna Fail shouldn’t have decided politics would be a gravy train after all the previous years of a republic with politicians paid good, but not enormous salaries and without multiple perks?
It’s not like it’s a natural state of being that has always existed.
“politicians paid good, but not enormous salaries and without multiple perks?”
Leo gave the game away in that embarrassing speech about Love Actually. While most lads dreamed of being in a band or professional sport, Leo dreamt of being part of British high society. *That* is his motive, not improving the lives of the Irish people.
I love you, Ro-Ro. You always make me smile. You’re like a reverse moral soundboard. Bravo.
Glad I can bring a modicum of joy into your existance Tones. You could repay us by writing something vaguely interesting the odd time.
That a boy! Vague is an interesting word choice, given you’re the only anonymous person in our tragic story of a love that never was.
“Us”? Why do you think you speak for anyone but yourself? Most people prefer Tony to you, fella.
I’m truly devo Moyest.
Truly.
The funny thing is, you actually are. Your nose was even put out of joint when I talked about a conversation someone I knew had with Proposterous because you’re The Man around here in your mind. :D
Ooh Tonybot. If Ms. Dickinson was alive , she would muse :
How dreary – to be – Somebody!
How public – like a Frog –
To tell one’s name – the livelong June –
To an admiring Blog!

Thanks for that sound advice, rotide. Even though you find yourself temperamentally unsuited to the profession of politics, if you want the perks and trappings you should hold your nose and plunge into a profession you are unsuited to – our of sheer greed. Fine advice, and no doubt many young people will do just that – the maximum gain from the minimum work.
PS “renumaration”?? Tut Tut
Doesn’t have to be Politics pops, You could be a world renowned musician, or a hollywood studio exec or a CEO or any number of professions that provide these kind of fringe benefits. Spoiler, while the benefits these guys get are manifold better than what Irish politicians recieve, you might find it slightly harder to achieve as well
Are you seriously positing that everyone on the planet can be a ‘Hollywood studio exec, or a world renowned musician, or a top earner and achiever? Who then grows the food, manufactures the goods and clothing, builds the buildings, pumps the oil and gas, or organizes the electricity and sanitation? You are saying that these workers are not honourable or necessary. What sort of stupid universe do you inhabit? Lick up to the rich and despise anybody who hasn’t attained their so called status? BTW you know nothing about me, and I’m thankful to say that I’m not your “pops”.
No, I’m not suggesting that everyone can attain those jobs. A tiny tiny minority will attain them. Thus it ever has been.
This is so, rotide, and few if any will dispute it. Why then, week in and week out, do you continue to condemn the majority, who can never hope to achieve riches?? This is your sport? Sad, very very sad.
If he wants to trot out lines about honesty, hard work and persistence in a year or two after he has addressed some of the issues of inequality and corruption then fine, until then let him put in the hard work and turn political corruption into political reform. Stop ministers getting 15k travel expenses for living 500m past the outer zone. Stop the heartache being caused to citizens by having to lie on hospital trolley in a corridor while all and sundry eyeball you as they pass by. Stop the scandal of hundreds of people sleeping on concrete in shop doorways in November when it’s -5 degrees out. Stop 1000’s of families and kids living in B n B’s all year round. How about making a promise and then keeping a promise for a change. His language is divisive and it stinks, early risers etc and now this rubbish. Another taoiseach talking out of both sides of his mouth and not much else of substance.

and also do something to restore the public’s faith in our police force, as his predecessor and his ministers for justice have done everything in their power to avoid tackling that in any meaningful way.
Well said, Liam, well said.
Excellent comment.

true. standing in the heat with a big poster can’t be easy, especially in a suit… and spouting poopy with the biggest free loaders on the continent while keeping a straight face, can’t be easy either in fairness.
Prince Rainier? Albert.
You can call him Al

I suppose There Ain’t No Such Thing As A Free Lunch would be too sci fi for Varadker.
Don’t lie – check
Don’t steal – check
Don’t be lazy – ……..
Leo gonna sort this out.
“You Don’t Get Anything For Nothing”
Verruca is really full of slogans.
He should listen to his own words, but that’s obviously not his job. I doubt if he even writes his own words.
What a twinkle pants puppet.
‘You don’t get anything for nothing’.
Is that directed at Multinational Corporations, IMF, ECB, Bilderberg, Vulture Capitalists, Financial Institutions, Developers, CEO’s of Charities, NAMA, Public Service Workers, An Gardai, The Judicial System, Catholic Church, GAA, Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil, American Fighter Airplanes in Shannon to name but some
I thinks it’s directed at Sole Traders, Socialists, liberal Intelligentsia, People Evicted From Their Homes, People in Negative Equity, Young People forced to immigrate, People on Trolleys, People Who Die Of Heart Attacks at Weekend Because Services Aren’t Open To Them.
People With Mental Anguish Because Of The Way The State Treats Them,
Asylum Seekers, Refugees, Travellers, People on 0 Hour Contracts, and People on Welfare to name just some.
Please feel free to add to the list if you feel you are being ignored.
If he creates jobs in our Republic for all instead of the few then he can redeem himself. Until then he is a Verruca on the soul of Irish society.
Someone’s words that Verruca spoke Friday night.
“A Republic of Opportunity based on work, persistence and honesty, where we provide a threshold below which no one is allowed to fall, and enable people to reach their full potential for the benefit of themselves and their families.”

Why was I put on the naughty list?
Hahaha… Is this some kind of joke by Waterford Whispers or the onion or something else?…
Ireland fund, tax havens, gala dinners.. etc.
The poor deluded aspiring middle class better watch out, tory boy varadker was completely useless as a minister in three different briefs, one of which was in health and he used to be a fupping doctor…
He’ll have you all working like dogs for fupp all and blaming the poor who don’t care because they’ve seen it all before….
Straight after every election since forever…
:-Joe
Indeed. Joe. you spoke the umvarnished truth. Whither now?
Whither now?……. Well personally, I can only hope I’ll live to see the day when the 60%-ish majority of Irish people stop voting for these establishment facsimiles of uselessness en masse and at the very least the concentrated power, ownership and control is reduced enough that FF/FG will merge together into the one party that they truly are. Perhaps then, something more proogressive can challenge and replace them….
One step at a time… as they say…
:-J
‘You don’t get anything for nothing’ he says? Fair enough., Maybe we should stop paying taxes in exchange for the big nothing we receive from the state?
You receive nothing from the state? LOL
“… but apart from better sanitation and medicine and education and irrigation and public health and roads and a freshwater system and baths and public order… what have the Romans done for us? “
that’s my slogan for when I trample on homeless people and punch charity-muggers in the head!
Why should I find cancer research? Get a job hippies!
Kids with Down’s Syndrome looking for a handout? Go to college and get a job in a bank, you lazy lady garden
Johnnyboydublin, you are my hero. Keep going young fellow, don’t let them grind you down, you dirty disgusting human being you! Thank goodness there are a few left.
Wasn’t Prince Albert playing for both sides, therefore Leo might have found a new amigo
And thereby hangs a tale (allegedly).
How stupid do you have to be to say this in the presence of a prince who inherited an enormous fortune he didn’t have to work for?
Very stupid?
I wonder what Whelan gave.
Has anyone ever seen RTE’s Anthony Murnane and Prince Albert of Monaco in the same room?
Thought not.
Cheezus Spag
Give us a chance t’answer
I might have
Thought his new slogan was “death to the poor”
Let them eat cake….once they have paid for it, mind.
