The ‘Dutch reach’

Ultan Mashup writes:

Sunday. Saw a South County cyclist knocked off his bike by a dipstick driver opening her car door right into him without looking back. He went down, was shook up, though lived.

171 D flash car, huge Louis Vuitton bag. Personally I’d sue on grounds of vulgarity alone, but here’s how YOU SHOULD do it: the Dutch Reach.

FIGHT!

  1. I'm "alright" Jack. Mad Jack is on annual leave.

Just fupp off. What the hell has the type of car the person drives got to do with her being involved in an unfortunate accident?

I always look in my wing mirror before opening the car door to get out, it’s an easy to habit to get into.

However, I am now going to adopt that Dutch reach, because age.

I was knocked over by a terribly nice guy in a very unflashy car. Didn’t stop him being an idiot and not looking, though.

Ultan seems to have some serious begrudgery going on there.

Having a fancy new car and a large handbag doesn’t make anyone better or worse.

Shame she didn’t open the door into the path of one of those Educate Together Cargo Bikes twits.

Thursday. Saw a tourist knocked over by a Dublin Bike user on Dame Street. Cyclist veered through pedestrians on a red light, attempted to break but was too late and knocked a female twentysomething woman over. She got up, was shook up, though lived.

Surely it’s in the interests of cyclists to stop at red lights? I see them breaking red lights every day. Is this OK? It seems many cyclists want all other road users to adhere to the rules of the road, but not themselves. I know – plenty of cyclists do stop at red lights, but at lots of junctions (Dame Street/North Strand to name two) the red light seems to be a suggestion rather than a rule.

Could not agree more. Its a daily occurrence I see 4 or 5 cyclists go through red lights, and a weekly occurrence that there is a near miss with one of them.

I am an advocate of there needing to be better bike infrastructure in Ireland, but I am tired of cyclists in Ireland. Any argument they present is pointless if they don’t abide the rules of the road.

I was sitting at the red light on my bike the other day when someone in his Superbikeman costume tore through the red light.

“Red light, Scumbag” I shouted only for him to turn around and tell me to fupp off. Oh how I laughed when he realized the guy on the bike next to me was a Guard.

      2. Murtle

I think its a bit unfair the say “they don’t abide the rules of the road”. The thing is, you probably see plenty of cyclists obeying the rules every day but you never remember them because they don’t stand out.

I think you’ll find most cyclists wouldn’t mind having the law more strictly enforced regarding red lights if the enforcement of cars running red lights , parking in bicycle lanes , and passing cyclists too closely were also properly enforced.

        1. Paps

Where did I say it was ok? You’re reading what you want to read Owen.
I said stronger enforcement all round would be welcomed.

          Good try though.

Through* . Did you miss spelling day in remedial school?

Its far easier to stop cyclists going through red lights than it is cars.

      1. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

        It’s, not its.
I’d use the same line on you but I’m too classy.

Surely a Dutch Reach is what’s going on in Dorset Street. And they’re protesting. You can’t win with these “leg over” merchants.

  7. Johnny Keenan

The Dutch are deadly with the ole common sense. Try as you might it’s very hard to do some Amsterdamage.

You can open a driver door with you left hand without all this turny roundy malarkey. Even if you do move your head you’d want to have some serious peripheral vision to see a cyclist coming at speed. Why not just use the mirrors that are already there instead of this body twisting yoga horse manure.

So, hitting cyclists with car doors == bad

Hitting swans with trains == more of an ambiguous situation(?)

Same thing happened to a friend of mine. Flew over the open door and broke her collarbone. Got it improperly set back in the hospital, suffered from pain for several months, until her company’s HR recommended she gets a European Health Insurance Card, travel to Germany and have it treated like an emergency. There, she got it fixed correctly.

But I digress… I don’t cycle, but some of those who do and had similar experience, suggested that next time this happens they’ll try to steer into the twat who opened the door, to cushion their impact.
