    With apologies for the cynicism, but sympathy for the homeless is not in short supply, housing is.

    Rough sleeping and homelessness were much less visible issues in 2011 because the economy was on the skids and rent had fallen 25% in two years.

    The booming economy – particularly in urban areas – is pushing up rents which, at the margin, tip the poorest and most vulnerable into homelessness.

    People instead should focus on fixing:
    -A planning system which makes housing overall very expensive
    -A social housing system which discriminates against single people, particularly men
    -An unwillingness to house people in rural areas where rents are much cheaper

    But I guess it’s much easier to light a candle than tackle hard policy problems.

    This is a ridiculous waste of time.
