De Daily Express is as close to de Broadsheet as a print newspaper could be.
    G’wan yis gud ting yis.

    1. Nigel

I do love anti-feminist pieces that start with the premise that all those poor victimised men who opposed giving women the vote or women working after they got married or making marital rape a crime were right and feminists do hate all men and want to emasculate them therefore any woman who says feminism isn’t about man-hating must be distancing themselves from feminism. Perfect bit of circular logic there. It’s like pointing to a Jewish person who says not all Jews are moneylenders as proof that Jews are distancing themselves from the Zionist Banking Conspiracy.

Did ths piece about how all the battles have been won outside the third world come out before or after Weinstein was exposed? It certainly came out while a man with multiple sexual assault allegations against him was elected to the most powerful political office in the world. But I’m guessing both of those are being blamed on feminists by someone somewhere.

          1. Nigel

If I was admitting to being unable to comprehend a fairly clear point I woildn’t be as confident that my opinions are obviously right as you seem to be.

          2. Nigel

            ‘Trump yaaaaawn.’
            Oooh you’re offended!
            Disagreement is attack.
            Oooh you’re triggered!
            ‘Waffle.’

Seriously. Where did you learn this was a good way to argue or debate?

Substantively respond to the points in my first comment or GTFO.

          3. Clampers Outside!

Go away with your demands of can’t or wont. I’m not responding to your nonsense post as pointed out previously.

I now await your usual… ‘you won’t answer my points” comment. When earler I said I do not wish to engage you with your off topic tangents.

          4. Nigel

If it was off-topic you could easily show that. But it isn’t so you can’t so you just keep asserting that it is.

      1. Clampers Outside!

Also, clearly you didn’t read it. She calls for a redirection within feminism, away from the claptrap it’s found itself in currently.

But hey, as always, attack first, and call it “anti” …eh?

        Relax will ya

        1. Nigel

Yes a redirection from the man-hating which I responded to in my comment. So far my criticising the article is a sign that I’m offended, and an attack, and not dealing in isolation with one particular aspect. You’ve posted three comments about it and the only direct reference to anything in my comment was about Trump. It’s like Cicero reborn here.

          1. Nigel

You either don’t understand it or don’t want to acknowledge it but since you’re the one that linked approvingly to that really poor and lazy article it could be either, or both.

          2. Nigel

It’s directly responsive to the original topic. You simply don’t want to engage substantively because you either don’t understand or don’t have an answer.

          3. Clampers Outside!

            “responsive to”

Why not stay on, rather than something “responsive to”.

You could be in a shipping meeting discussing container transport costs, and you’re bringing up the effects on coral reefs by shipping. Stick to the point, save the tangents for another meeting.

The point was on the state of feminism today. An ideology very well known and understood to have little in way of self critique and even discourages it in its teaching at university level, through women’s studies courses.

The modern state of feminism is what the piece is about.

          4. Nigel

This is a conversation not a meeting with an agenda. You can’t proscribe or dictate my responses or critiques, you can merely avoid them and try to invalidate them by declaring them out of order because you seem to regard anything that strays outside your rather narrow comfort zone (‘ain’t academic feminism awful!’) as almost tantamount to a personal attack. (‘Accusation!’) This might work for you but don’t pretend it’s anything other than avoidance.

Since you haven’t refuted or disproved a single thing from my first comment, the only thing it ‘beats’ is any effort at intelligent debate.

          5. mildred st. meadowlark

            It’s their Saturday squabble.

Tune in next week when Clamps and Nigel wrangle it out over Scientology, George Soros and the shape of clouds. Don’t miss it folks!

          6. Nigel

Good advice. Final thought: a year ago today at a rally in Carolina Trump said his accusers were too ugly to rape. Yaaaaawn. Feminism bad. Etc.

      2. john

The battles in the third world seem to the completely ignored by many feminists, particularly when it comes to Islam. Islam, clearly, has a problem with women, yet many modern feminists worldview is extremely parochial. It’s the same view that says, white people can’t be victims of racism. It’s a fear of offending other cultures – no matter how bad those other cultures are.

One small example: women in Dubai need a “letter of no objection” from their father/husband if they want to get a working visa. Another example: Women in Dubai who get raped and go to the police get arrested for having sex out of wedlock. If either of those things happened in say, Sweden, there would (rightly) be boycotts and protests around the globe. When it happens in a Muslim country? Deafening silence.

        1. Nigel

People have been saying stuff like this at least since Gulf War 2 when feminists opposing the war were said to be supporting oppressive patriarchal regimes. How well that worked out. No doubt feminists are far from perfect, or even agreement, on helping women under Islam, but I doubt anti-feminists using them to attack feminism care one way or the other.

          1. john

Irony! Attacking a culture that treats women as second class citizens means you are an “anti-feminist”? Modern Irish feminism is very selective, that’s my point. You can oppose the war in Iraq (I did) and believe Islam is terrible for women (I do). Just wondering why Irish feminists so quiet on Islam…

          2. Nigel

You didn’t attack a culture that treats women as second class citizens you attacked feminism, which can both think that Islamic regimes are repressive and misogynistic and not want to see them militarily invaded.

        2. Listrade

          I agree 100%.

I mean we hear extensively from the MRA contingent about the incidence of male sexual assault especially in conflict areas. It’s not as if they only complain about the issues directly effecting them or mostly write to only debase feminist arguments.

I am literally swamped by articles and outcry by MRAs on failure to tackle the historic and current reported male sexual assault during conflicts in El Salvador, Chile, Guatemala, Argentina, Greece, Northern Ireland, Chechnya, Turkey, the former Yugoslavia, Sri Lanka, Iraq-Kuwait, Coalition Iraq, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Kenya, Sudan, the Central African Republic, Burundi, Uganda, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.

Thank god they write and campaign extensively for men’s rights everywhere and not just their own experiences. Thank god they use international experiences to put their own privileged into perspective. Otherwise they’d look a bit silly and hypocritical.

    2. Nice Anne1

What a clickbaity piece of rubbish… (“Women….” … do you mean all women, some women, a tiny proportion of women? / roll eyes)

If the Times is the paper of record, it is a scratched melted one.

    3. realPolithicks

Clampers, your MO these days seems to be to post a link to some drivel about feminism or whatever right wing talking point you have at the moment and then go on to mansplain to everyone why its all basically an attack on angry white males like yourself. You’ll throw in a few of your favorite buzzwords like, “triggered” or “snowflake’ and then when someone argues with you, you refuse to accept that you actually said the things that you did say. You’re becoming a parody of yourself.

      1. Clampers Outside!

Its “right wing” now to point out issues and worthy criticism of feminism… Jaysus! rP

Plse also show this “mansplain” accusation you just made as there is no evidence of it here. Plse do explain yourself.

The rest of your comment is you going off on one.
I’ve no comment on that, just that it’s nothing new.

I look forward to your response, and have a lovely day.

        1. Warden of the Snort

I don’t look forward to it in fact I hope you never get another response again

You need a lot of help

          1. Warden of the Snort

Because you just go on and on and on, it leads nowhere, and all you’re doing is baiting the other bullies and trolls until you start to look one of them

          2. Nigel

The exchanges are not edifying but I was sincerely looking, more in hope than expectation, for a debate or argument about the issues in the article posted, not a long tedious back and forth about what constitutes an actual response, for which I take equal blame since I could have just walked away any time.

However I was not trolling, and if Clampers feels I was bullying him I hope he knows me well enough to know that if he said as much to me I would apologise and desist.

          3. Warden of the Snort

That’s how it comes across and when others join in the clampers bashing as well it looks like a concerted crusade to shut the man up. At the end of the day he’s just some harmless bloke sounding off on blog. Look I don’t care for a lot of what he says either, and I’m sure that goes both ways, but I don’t see why the rest of us should have to suffer a twice weekly micky measuring contest between the pair of ye

          4. Nigel

In my defence, I’m not trying to shut him up I’m trying to talk to him, at first anyway. It does get crankier as it goes on and I should know better by now and I apreciate it might come across as something else. Who knew it was so difficult to politely disagree with people on the internet?

  2. Liggy

Feminism got us the following rights and laws:
Better healthcare (compared to the past)
to have our case heard by jury of our peers
to own a home in our own name
to marry outside of our religion and nationality (1986)
to be able to work after marriage
    Sex ed
    the right to divorce
the Home protection act (and the ending of the concept of one partner or the other outrightly owning a family home)
the family law act which gave women the right to say no to sex in a marriage
martial rape law (but not until booping 1990!)
the ability to collect the children’s allowance without being accompanied by the father of the children
    Gay marriage

    Access to contraception
Anyone remember a time when our own government fined the IFPA for selling condoms in a public place? (the Virgin megastore in Dublin) This was the same year Tim Berners-Lee released the WorldWideWeb (1st web browser) for collaborators to build on. At the same time, all Ireland was worried about was what men were putting on their mickey. Ridiculous.

I do remember this time and it was a joke. Who protested, who campaigned for your right to have jonnies available in pub loos and given away for free in sexual health clinics? Irish women’s groups. That’s who. You are ploopy booples welcome.

Balance all that against some whingers on the internet who don’t understand feminism and I think most women and men would take all the benefits and laugh at the whingers.

    LOL
Sorry for the swearing (not sorry)

    1. Clampers Outside!

All great stuff Liggy. All of which would come under egalitarian or equity-feminism.

I think the piece is more about modern feminism and where it is today… and a large part of that is involved in promoting ‘victimhood’ culture.
The promotion of ‘microagression’ theory; feminist intersectionality theory; ‘unconscious bias’ training…. and so on…

That’s the hokum stuff I believe the piece is looking at. Its the stuff Paglia argues against, and rightly.

Latest studies, googled easily (I’m on a phone), show that microagression theory and unconscious bias training don’t do anything productive, and can actually cause mental health concerns among those taking courses. This is the stuff that have come from feminism in “academia”. I use the term loosely because its not academic anymore…. not if you look at the work produced. its ideological. The opposite of what a liberal education, or liberal academia is supposed to be.

    2. rotide

Sorry, If you think feminism was responsible for widespread access to condoms , then you’re completely rewriting history.

There might have been feminist groups campaigning for it but it was AIDS that showed how ridiculously backward we were in not having condoms freely available.

      1. Nigel

I’m not sure ‘feminists campaigned for access to contraception’ and ‘AIDS truly opened everyone’s eyes to the necessity’ are so.much contradictory as complimentary. I don’t mind Haughey getting credit for legalising condoms but I’d hate to see the condom train get forgotten.

        1. Milo

It was mostly frustrated boys that got access to contraception. Lots of lobbying done by people who would not have needed the feminist tag to validate themselves.

          1. Nigel

Yeah? Hence the campaigns for access for women. Lots of people avoided the feminist tag because of rape threats and death threats and general vilification all very validating I’m sure.

          2. Milo

Most people avoid the feminist tag because it would mean they were something like yourself and Liggy. And that doesn’t win votes for anything to change, just builds a wall of resistance to the shrill moany misandry that you use “feminism” to justify. Women should be more to you than a human shield to use as a platform for signalling virtue and hiding behind. And if everyone tells you the same thing, it might be time to listen!

      2. Dubhlinn

1970s – the condemn train protests started.
1971 – Mary Robinson and others attempted to read a Bill allowing the sale and import of contraceptives.
1979 – condemns made available WITH a prescription to over 18s …. if married
1980s – The aids crisis started and hit its xenith
        1983 – A doctor is fined £500 for selling 10 condoms to a patient.
1985 – 1991 Condemns available without a prescription just not outside of a surgery, clinic or pharmacy
1993 – it was still illegal to advertise the sale of condemns in Ireland

Week in and week out, decade after decade, women who were members of the council of women in ireland went by car and train to the North to bring back contraceptives and literature for the newly opened family planning clinics, campaigned for condemns to be made accessible and available for free. nice try on rewriting history yourself.

        1. rotide

So condom trail and Mary Robinson fails to legalise sale of condoms.

Sale of condoms legalised during the height of the Aids crisis.

          Got it.

What part exactly was I wrong about?

    3. Milo

Hmm, a bit hyperbolic there. Feminism is related to the issues your raise, but a lot more than feminism realised them. People would take you more seriously if it wasn’t for this kind of blah.

  3. bad@memes

Lads, if you’re going to hi-jack a thread, do it at night time when everybody else is asleep.
Show some fupping respect for the more ‘casual’ reader.

      1. badatmemes

That was going to be my punchline.
        I’ll admit,I ruminated…
…then I thought, ‘NO’. It goes without saying, dunnit?

  5. bad@memes

Moderation, let me explain something to you.
    Sit down.

If I post something I think needs saying I keep refreshing the page while I wait for you to release me from your Limbo.
I can’t remember the last time you deleted anything I posted.
But, and this is me point… I get bored waiting… I poke you with my stick, metaphysically speaking…

You’re making me do it again.

    I have two questions.
There’s no fupping point in asking either of them.

    1. bad@memes

      Okay….
      – I’ll ask one of them. Nothing will happen, but here goes…

Why not incorporate a time-limited ‘EDIT’ window to review your mistakes?
      – Everybody wants it, some of us need it more than others, and it would be a Godsend to the Community as a whole.

      Think about it.
You’re good at thinking about it.

  6. bad@memes

I didn’t think this through properly, did I?

    – All that stuff about ‘hi-jacking’ has probably put me on the CIA’s Watchlist.

    Damn you Broadsheet.

  7. bad@memes

    And another thing…
    Bobby Gillespie was wrong.
(To be honest, I think he borrowed it, so he has an accomplice, but I digress.)

    He sang:
”I believe in Live and Let Live,
I believe you get what you give;’

I believe you should get what you deserve.

    Maybe it’s just me…

    semi-related…

I am in someone else’s gaff.

Did anything major happen in The News?

I wake up every day praying for a hurricane. (Not literally.)

  10. petey

hey mods, i’m tired of having to point out that while you always have time for the capitalist press (all of the organs pictured above) you don’t for (what passes for) the socialist press (in our decadent times).

in fact, here’s a monthly you could put up, y’know, monthly.
    http://www.communistpartyofireland.ie/sv/

    1. Clampers Outside!

It’s a hard job every evening to gather the papers. The individual papers do not send them out; the times they are released can vary; different formats need to be reformatted, sizes, etc. An admin has to chase them down, honestly. I had to do similar for a newsletter in a previous job and we dropped it because it was too time consuming. I have never done it for BS, but imagine they have the same problem.

As this is a group blog, I would suggest that when they produce their monthly, maybe you could send it to BS for inclusion. In fairness to the night time admin(s?) like.

  11. badatmemes

    4 hours in Moderation.

    I know it’s the weekend, but eh…

    My second question…
Why are the more questionable allowed a free-pass, no question?

I’m not annoyed. That’s what YOU do.
    I’m just confused.

    1. badatmemes

Okay, maybe it was only two hours…how should I know?

I can see what you”re up to Broadsheet…
…trying to make out that it’s ME who’s the idiot in this relationship.

You never reciprocate the love I display, nakedly, do you?

      1. badatmemes

I swear… if I get one of them ‘fixed’ replies from Bodger I’m going offline.
        – That’s not what I meant. Behave yourself.

        1. Bertie Blenkinsop

          Here’s a thought –
maybe stop posting nonsense and being obnoxious and then they wouldn’t feel the need to moderate your drivel.

          1. Bertie Blenkinsop

You write an open letter to The Samaritans here most evenings Memes, if anyone is miserable it’s undoubtedly you.
Stop posting offensive rubbish and bad mouthing others and maybe they won’t need to moderate you.

          2. Frilly Keane

Shur what do you care Bertie
            Batty mostly
            Only replies to himself

            You’ve had your tantrum
            And your stomping off
So stop looking to see if anyone will notice 2nd time round

          3. Bertie Blenkinsop

I didn’t stomp off anywhere Frilly and I’ll reply to who I want, when I want, feel free not to read my posts if they bother you.

          4. Frilly Keane

            Ha!
            Give over
You had a right oul’ turn so you did

            Anyway
            No worries
I don’t usually even read Battys either
            Just ya know
            Sunday morning lie in
And wondering what all the fuss was about on the Saturday Papers

Suppose the Bat Signal has gone up now for your pal to come on and start phocfhoc’ing about Anne Marie McNally
            Yeah
            Good ta’ya back Bert

          5. Warden of the Snort

Is there anything Bertie said that is not emphatically correct?

I do think Memes has an occasional valid insight but most of it is just meandering myopic attention-seeking which most of us grow out of before or around puberty.

It’s sad to witness and you bottled it as well Frilly a few months ago when you defended Memes in one of his occasional and disturbing drunken and abusive attacks on Bertie. I know the likes of Bertie gives as good as he gets, and most lads if such a dispute happened say in a football match, would shake hands after and say, sorry for that leg-breaking tackle there, and try to get on with it. But not you, you waded in in a flat out denial of reality and what we all saw with our own eyes and here you are again now stirring the pot. Would you ever give over and put your considerable intellects to more productive use than refereeing (and failing at it) a schoolyard melee?

          6. Frilly Keane

That was a quick turnout to the Bat- Signal Bert

            Here
            I bottled nothing
            Nothing
And I’ll continue to stand up for Batty
            I’ve never backed down
            Not once
And can’t see that changing anytime soon either
So referring to me Bottling it
Is pathetic and a bit sad if I’m honest
            It’s not even decent trolling
But it is an attempt to bully
But hay hypocrisy is your operating policy

But I fully expect ye to put the band back together here now. For Bert

And have your backing singer warble off the same single post from over a year ago again again
( She’s still to thick to notice the sexist irony of singling out a comment of mine whilst ignoring all the similar & multiple comments from male contributors)

Let’s see what Broadsheet do about the feeding frenzy this time round Bert

          7. Warden of the Snort

Lol what a dirge that was, seeing as you used a musical analogy

            it was tuneless, polysyllabic, dissonant

I love the way you draw other perceived enemies into it as well, jaysus I’d say you are tough going

No I’m just one ‘concerned commenter’ and I’m not acting in cohort with Bertie or anyone else. We’re all sick to death of your antics. That’s it..

          8. Frilly Keane

            Tell ya what

“we’re all sick to death of your antics”
            Let’s have ye
            C’ mon now Bert
            They’re here for you
And insisting I “bottled it” in your name

So let’s have a full line out
            And pick your favourite antic

          9. Bertie Blenkinsop

Nothing to do with me Frilly I’ve been at the cinema all morning with a 6 year old.
(it was my son, no need to get Donal Og to write a letter for me )

          10. Frilly Keane

And yet just 3 mins after my last post there
About getting ye to line out
            Here you are

            Yer’ codding no one Bert

          11. Bertie Blenkinsop

            Paranoid much?
Feel free to check with the moderators Frilly, those posts are nothing to do with me, you can choose to believe it or not.

          12. Warden of the Snort

            What a fupping loola

Sorry Bertie I didn’t mean to uncork this bottle
though clearly it doesn’t take much

          13. Frilly Keane

            Give over
            Either put up
            And actually put it up
            Here
The actual Antics and bottling it and all yere other amateur stink bombs at me
Or go back to your tantrum squat

Funny how noisy you and your pals are Bert when Batty is sleeping it off somewhere.

          14. Frilly Keane

            So you were “roped in”

            Ahhh
What d’ya make a’ that now Bertie

Let’s see who “Bottles it” now

          15. Bertie Blenkinsop

Jesus, it’s like trying to teach a card trick to a donkey, this has nothing to do with me, what part of that don’t you understand?
You’re ruining Bargain Hunt, give it a rest now.

          16. Warden of the Snort

            point taken clamps

unfortunately I think this is a different case

here we have someone with a personal vendetta against Bertie and it’s disgusting. I call this one out as I can see clearly Bertie doesn’t deserve to be victimised like this and the moderators should be banning these serial offenders permanently.

I don’t agree to be honest with your perspective on some of the topics you post about, but in your case your trolls/ people are literally lining up to beat you up and draw you into an argument BECAUSE they have already decided THEIR opinion on a topic and YOU ARE WRONG (in those people’s minds). So you’re wasting your time even responding to them. the discussion gets so far away from the gist of what you’re even trying to raise.

          17. Nigel

The good thing about this is that it makes my exchanges with Clampers look like Socratic dialogues and I don’t feel so bad for being such a massive eejit with him when I get sick and bored and cranky.

        2. Frilly Keane

Don’t be getting odd wi’me now Bert
T’would be more in your line ta’have a word with yer posse and their carry-on and throwing up stuff about me “Bottling it” and My “antics”
          And on your behalf

          So own it yerself

          1. Bertie Blenkinsop

My posse, ha the very thought of it!

I despair, you’re a lost cause Frilly, you’d start a row in a phone box honestly, you seem to thrive on confrontation, good luck to you, I’ll be over here with the warm and friendly folk if you ever feel like dropping by.

          2. Frilly Keane

            “Who knew?”
Anyone who was watching this and the Sunday Papers thread since 9am

So did ye dump the “Fed This Now” hat
Or did ye forget about it

Please read the following in the voice of David McSavage doing an impression of Seamus Heaney.

‘There’s A Man On A Horse Jumping Through Another Horses Eye’

    There’s a picture of a man on a horse
    jumping through another horses eye
on the cover of the Irish Field.
Kind of like this Deliverance poster:

    Only not as good.

    1. Warden of the Snort

I’ve a pain in me hoop with some posters

      essentially what they do is

Yell “Fire” then say other people started it

Or worse, that they didn’t. What has this to do with horses?

      Nothing. Except when they excreet.

And in that poster, the Deliverence poster
      The eye sees the light
      Cahulawa’, Cahulawa’,
      Cahulawa’, Cahulawa’,
      Oh-ooooooo!
Down the Cahulawasee river tonight !
