This morning.
At the former Longfields Hotel on Fitzwilliam Street Lower, Dublin 2.
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy launched a new homeless facility containing 30 permanent emergency beds which will be managed by the Simon Community from tonight.
In a press release, Mr Murphy said:
“This Christmas, there will be over 200 additional permanent emergency beds, with wrap around medical and other required supports in place for those who unfortunately are homeless and need our help.
“…The rough sleeper count, which the Dublin Region Homeless Executive published last month, reported a total of 184 rough sleepers across the Dublin region on the night of the 7th November 2017.
“The 200 permanent emergency beds, which the Government have now delivered, mean that an emergency bed and shelter will be available for those who need them.
“Today, the Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar and I were pleased to visit 30 of the new permanent emergency beds at Longfields, Fitzwilliam Street, which the Simon Community will operate and manage.

Any news on creating affordable rental accommodation for the hard working punters on stagnant wages? No, didn’t think so.. not on the agenda
no but the minister for nice folks from Ranelagh village was on the radio earlier in discussion about how young people working in tech are soon gonna be able to pretend they’re in Friends with some shared living space conceptual mullarkey. don’t listen back it’ll likely make you even more upset.
What’s the problem with only living in a house you can afford?
Put up a list of incomes, starting at, say €20,000, increment it in steps of €5,000 up to say, €40,000 and put opposite each amount the location in Dublin and prices of houses there that can be afforded on each income. By your reckoning there should be a house affordable for each of those incomes.
Yes you might have to share a room. Are you too good for that?
Looks like you were called out on your spouting. Can’t provide the figures then? The run away kid eh!
If council housing is built it will take the pressure off rents. Rents are rising now because it’s a seller’s market. When people have the option of a council house or flat, that will take a huge number of potential tenants out of that market, and rents will start to drop.
I read somewhere that the cost for this is €300,000 per bed and that’s before the operating cost of the hostel.
Is this true?
It seems quite bizarre the amount of money spent on homelessness, with no real reduction in numbers.
Easy to write the cheques when it’s not your money I suppose.
Work was done by Summit Conservation and Restoration – by all accounts it looks like a great job done. They’re also doing Colins Barracks – so pretty high standard outfit.
They spent an age doing very highly detailed work on the brick pointing – possibly the best I’ve seen on any Georgian in the area. Some poor lad spent about 3 weeks stripping some of the wrought iron work as well. And saw a nice 4k telly go in as well. plenty of money spent on it. Glad to see a transitional place for the people that need it – but by janeymac, money spent.
I’ve no link to what i saw
I think the general rule of thumb for a hospital build is a cost of €1m per bed (the NMH has overrun this figure I think). Considering these have medical facilities as well then 300k makes sense. Not that I’m saying that’s good value, but it seems to be around the going rate.
“I read somewhere…. blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah”
Link to where you read it or shut your gob.
Indeed Killian. Don’t have time. Soz
Yep DCC paid 7 million for it in 2007 –

That doesn’t include security on the site since then, or the restoration work. Seems long an extraordinarily high amount spent for a return of just 30 beds.
I read somewhere beards are over.
Who’s gonna tell Ronaldo’s girlfriend?
Thank God for that! They’re ageing and men all look the same in them. There’s alot to be said for a clean shaven jaw.
Total cost coming in at 300,000 per bed.
WTF!!!!
That first picture is quite something. I wonder what they’re pointing at
even the cctv cameras are looking!?!
Slab Murphy at it again.
And wait until March when we will read that these ‘permanent’ beds will be closed for 7months.
