I brook no argument when I say Keith Moon is the finest drummer in contemporary music owing to his complete and total genius. As long as we play The Who Keith remains alive.

    1. Arthur

Came here to post something similar.

Great drummer! Someone once said that keith moon played lead drums and, he pretty much did!

  2. Morgen Scheissekopf

‘I brook no argument when I say Cozy Powell is the finest drummer in contemporary music owing to Dance With The Devil’

  3. gorugeen

I Brook no argument when I say Roger Taylor of Queen is the finest drummer in contemporary music owing to his amazing depth of originality and creativity. He contributed at least one full song per album and collaborated with oodles of the biggest and best. Good singer too.

  4. Arthur

I brook no argument when I say Sean Moore is the finest drummer in contemporary music owing to BossaNova

  5. GiggidyGoo

I brook no argument when I say Alesis ST16 is the finest drummer in contemporary music owing to keeping perfect time and not having to pay it’

  6. Yep

I brook no argument when I say Levon Helm is the finest drummer in contemporary music owing to him being the embodiment of groove with a serious set of pipes on him. RIP

    1. realPolithicks

This is who I would have picked…..Levon Helm was always my favorite member of The Band (a much underrated band in my humble opinion).

  7. Scoops yeah?

I brook no argument when I say Fyffe Ewing, Reni, Jimmy Chamberlin, in no particular order, are the finest drummers in contemporary music owing to their contrariness (which seems a pre requisite for drummers) and unique drumming styles. All quite different but equally brilliant. That said, I appear to be still living in the 90’s. From where this message was sent.

  8. Custo

Patrick Wilson from Weezer because the fills and time changes in Pinkerton. So shambolicly loose and tight as a nut at the same time.

  9. Joe cool

I brook no arguement when i say the finest drummer that ever lived was Buddy Rich. Hands as fast as light. No one comes near

  10. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

Terry Bozzio on account of his Zappa stuff. I saw him doing a solo gig here years ago. AWESOME.

    Fyfe Ewing _ off beats

Most influential drummer of modern times, jazz beats in dance, metal punk, industrial & classical… Yup

  12. rugbyfan

Lars Ulrich from Metallica. When I first heard the ..and justice for all album in 1988 I thought, yeah great stuff then the track that opened my ears to drumming came on . Track number 4 and the mighty anti war song….One. Tthe haunting intro, the slow 4 note build up,the pulsating double bass drum, thumping like the heartbeat of the protagonist in the song. The acceleration of the guitars was there for all to marvel but it was the rat-tat-tat-tat-tat of the snare drum piercing the air like bullets. The volume the noise, the horror. What a piece of drumming. It all came back when I saw them live in the point depot in 1992. The energy of the man as he hammered away for nearly 3 hours on his Tama kit. Double bass and four high toms and assorted Cymbals thrashing about. Ears ringing as we went home, we had seen a master at work!

    Contemporary..

It’s Phil selway of radiohead. The times, signatures or whatever of there stuff is so ever changing and he never misses a beat. Whatever new strange rabbit hole Thom or Johnny want to drive down he keeps it ticking along.

Otherwise it’s Stewart Copeland of the police. He was just an absolutely brilliant drummer and the single best thing about the police

  14. some old queen

I’m a 4 to the floor (120 bpm) queen so couldn’t possibly comment on a the solo from a Red Hurley gig.

  15. Kolmo

I brook no argument when I say Ziggy Modeliste is the finest drummer in contemporary music owing to the Cissy Strut – well, it’s contemporary relative to Mozart.. – play this tune, focus on the beat – any problem you are having will dissipate like steam – you become the coolest cat wherever you are, maybe you are running to get the bus, “nah, I’m a gonna strut, the bus is gonna wait” – it probably won’t, but you feel it will, and that’s the power of this pearl of a beat, I challenge you all to play this on your way to work/dole office – nothing will faze you.

  16. Royal M

‘I brook no argument when I say Neil Peart of Rush is the finest drummer in contemporary music owing to the fact that after decades of accolades and widespread praise for his drumming skills, he relearnt the drums in a traditional jazz style totally changing his sound and his approach to drumming’

    1. The Real Shrimply Pibbles

I’m sure Pearts great an all at playing drums but Rush are just awful. Geddy lee’s voice is like nails scraping on a blackboard to my ears

      1. Royal M

Top Tip: Before you slag off Rush on the internet, double check you haven’t already bigged-up Therapy?on the same page.

  17. Liam Deliverance

My next door neighbor practices her drumming on a daily basis, drives me fupping nuts and I may well kill her one day (joking). Despite this I love the art of drumming, the physicality of it and indeed the visual spectacle that you don’t get from playing a mouth organ for example.

‘I brook no argument when I say Steve Moore of Rick K and the Allnighters is the finest drummer in contemporary music owing to his verve, energy and the unique style that he brings to the party. Even his drumming platform has taken on a anthropomorphic persona and reinforces Steve’s alternative moniker of “The Mad Drummer”.

  18. The Real Shrimply Pibbles

I brook no argument when I say Keith Moon is the finest drummer in contemporary music owing to his penchant for incorporating destruction into his playing. Who cares about paradiddles when your professional goal is to destroy a thousand drum kits? The embodiment of raw intense power.

  19. Frilly Keane

I knew a lad one time
    Kerry Jones
He drummed with Cork set up
    How & Why Insects
    And also apparently
    The Waterboys
While still studying English in de’College
I don’t know where he is now or where he went to from UCC
The last news I had was he got a 1st, and had to turn down Harvard ’cause of cost, and he needed to get a job asap

Anyway Kerry was definitely the best Drummer I’ve ever known
And Murty (Sultans etc) is my Mam’s 2nd cousin is my favourite
Probably also my favourite Cork person, even tho I haven’t seen him in over 25 years

  20. mildred st. meadowlark

I brook no argument when I say that RSAG (aka Jeremy Hickey) is the finest drummer in contemporary music owing to the fact that he’s an extraordinary musician, and watching him perform live is truly amazing and honestly gives me chills in the best way.

  21. scottser

I Brook no argument when I say that our very own Brian Downey of thin lizzy is the finest drummer in contemporary rock music owing to his perfect groove and jaw dropping technique. Most drummers do either quite well, Charlie watts or Phil rudd are fantastic groovers but pretty limited whereas neil peart or Danny Carey couldn’t swing for shite. Downey has everything. And for any drummer learning crucial timings like 12/8 he’s the bomb. Anyway I nominate bad reputation as the track ye should play.

  22. Leopold Gloom

    Despite my earlier comment

‘I brook no argument when I say Jaki Liebezeitis (from Can) the finest drummer in contemporary music owing to this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5a_XVM7LGnk among many things

I still stand by my stewart copeland comment though. Seriously underrated and he had to put up with Sting

  23. Paddy at the Howth Summit

‘I brook no argument when I say the LinnDrum is the finest drummer in contemporary music owing to me liking that awesome Human League LP ‘Dare’’

  24. petey

    … carlton barrett …
… he found beats where no one else would.

    honorable mention to john bonham.

  25. Iwerzon

John Joe Kelly’s superb bodhran playing
Because of his driving rhythm and fierce beats with trad super group Flook!
