Michael Noonan
Bridget Cole: As minister for Health [December 1994 to June 1997], Michael Noonan refused to grant significant aid payments to victims of the Hepatitis C scandal and resisted Donegal mother Brigid McCole, who was forced to take court action for compensation but died before she could benefit.
Grace: A mute child, Grace remained in a foster home with an abusive family for more than a decade after other children had been removed. In 1996, after the Southern Health Board decided that Grace be removed, the foster father sent a letter lobbying then Minster for Health Michael Noonan. Grace was subsequently allowed to stay at the home for another 13 abusive years.
Joanne Hayes: As Minister for Justice [December 1982 to February 1986, Michael Noonan was aware prior to the Kerry babies Tribunal that Gardai would push a ‘superfecundation’ narrative against Joanne Hayes. He was also told, before the tribunal, by Garda Commissioner Larry Wren that his senior detectives had been “grossly negligent”.
Garry writes:
All women/kids/both. All extremely traumatic and vulnerable. All cases involving torture and death. Makes one wonder what sort of mission Noonan believed he was on?
Anyone?
Previously: ‘It Was I Who Was On Trial’
This should have ended his career. But not in Ireland where corruption and incompetency gets redwarded
Sheesh. Bleak reading.
What else would you expect from a Blueshirt, in fairness?
Noonan has proven himself to be one of the nastiest, spliteful, devious politicians ever. There’s many more people that could be added to that list.
A huge part of his legacy entails the vulture fund culture he actively encouraged as well as the failure of NAMA to adhere to principles that would be to the benefit of the people of Ireland.
But his treatment of vulnerable women and children as minister of health are as damning as anything that has gone on in the history of this state.
What an evil boo boo. Not a whiff of empathy off him.
he even looks like a ghoul.
Here’s what the Baldy gowl had to say about bringing in the Vulture funds, who he personally wined and dined with :
“You criticise me for not intervening with vulture funds. Well, it was a compliment when they were so dubbed in America because vultures, you know, carry out a very good service in the ecology. They clean up dead animals that are littered across the landscape.”
He is a sociopath. He thinks he’s some sort of economic genius, he was seen as an idiot in Brussels, as confirmed by the Greek Finance minister Yanis Varoufakis – a man with real intelligence.
He should have stuck to being a secondary school teacher.
“He thinks he’s some sort of economic genius, he was seen as an idiot in Brussels, as confirmed by the Greek Finance minister Yanis Varoufakis – a man with real intelligence.”
Noonan: was finance minister of the fastest-growing economy in Europe
Varoufakis: almost got Greece thrown out of the eurozone, costing the Greek economy tens of billions of euro through his brinkmanship.
Hmmm…
We were threatened ourselves, unless the taxpayer took on the debt.. people have died because of it. Noonan is an idiot.
If you actually think that the Greek govt did a better job weathering the crisis than the Irish did, I suggest that you read a news source other than Broadsheet the odd time.
Yanis Varoufakis fought for his country..he fought to not have a ‘bailout’ & strict austerity terms enforced on his people.
The bald eagle/ex accounts teacher, did none of those things. If you listened to Yanis Varoufakis for 5 minutes you would see he could run rings around that fool. The man has more intelligence in his baby toe than Noonan. Noonan is a man of limited intelligence IMO, his contempt for ordinary people doesn’t elevate him all that much.
Balancing your debits & credits might impress 16 year olds, but the rest of us know what he stands for. His comment on the vultures says it all.
Listen to Yanis Varoufakis and Vincent Browne & you’ll get what a fool Noonan was seen as in Europe.
“Yanis Varoufakis fought for his country..he fought to not have a ‘bailout’ & strict austerity terms enforced on his people.”
– he allowed Greece to get into a position where a bailout was the only option; no other lenders would go near them.
“Balancing your debits & credits might impress 16 year olds, but the rest of us know what he stands for.” – this is the actual job of a finance minister. Varoufakis seems more comfortable on the interview circuit, he should stick to that.
You have just reminded me of sum’ting Rob
Just before Kevin Cardiff got the call up to grander office he was running away from questions about a 3.6 BILLION overstatement
(transaction was recorded twice)
Lizard Noonan was MoF at the time
So if we’re pointing fingers at lads that can’t manage double entry or know their debits from their credits.
T’would do no harm to look a bit closer to home while we’re at it
Frilly, I’m sure that Noonan made loads of mistakes and could have done many things better; but to imply that Varoufakis was a better finance misinter as Anne is saying is not grounded in reality, and is contradicted by every statistic under the sun.
Agreed
Point really being that we’re in no shape to be discussing any other crowd’s Finance Depts
I disagree.
Ireland was consistently the fastest-growing economy, and exiting the bailout ahead of time under Noonan, while Greece was looking for yet another bailout under Varoufakis. It is not an unreasonable conclusion to say that one country’s Dept of Finance performed better than the other’s.
the revelations about his meeting with Cerberus in a “competitive bid” situation on Project Eagle, should have led to his resignation in disgrace.
A right wing minister in a right wing country did all this. Why is anyone suprised ?
+1
In his eyes, the irish citizen is the ungrateful enemy.
A societal world view based on the worst Dickens characters.
A “no-society” merchant, Thatcher would be surprised at his contempt for us.
Ya know, despite the fact that I actually take some joy from the fact that is was Shinner Quinlivin’s transfers that got him over the line on the last count
… but I’m still a bad loser

Being a horrible person has nothing to do with being right or left wing. A quick Google search will reveal details of horrid actions by people of both sides.
Go on Taunton, say something bad about Noonan, I dare you..
He’s a horrid person.
He had no problem helping Brigid McCole to the grave under the threat of legal action. Years later came on the Late Late show looking for sympathy on the death of his own wife. Some neck.
And we’ll be paying his massive pension for the rest of his disgusting life. A real pig of a man.
in fairness he is 74 already and isn’t getting a pension yet. So there is that.
I doubt he cares
he’s a speculator and bondholder personally too – and has made millions through investments in AIB, bank of Ireland, gold, portuguese government bonds…
the pension is small fry to him
he also has a teacher’s pension, according to one paper (a few years ago) he was gifting it to the department of education.
Talk about a conflict of interest.
Yeah, but his pact with Satan will see him linger for another couple of decades at least…
It is shocking. The callousness is difficult to understand.
#WeAreNotSafe
a mission of “fupp ’em as long as I get to keep my job”
Noonan is one of the brutal faces of the FG narrative.
that pic there
those eyes
that pallor
I have never seen anything more Lizard like
I can almost feel and smell the mustie smuggy clammy’ness
Christ t’night
I am actually gobsmacked
how did I not pick up on it before

Keep a close eye on where his kids end up.
It will not be a surprise to some.
Ah c’mon Jim Bob
I’ve no patience ah’ tall
At least gimme a bitta’ve hint
His daughter Orla is an investment banker with the AB Groupe SA. Son a chef, son a muinteoir.
A right wing politician, treating citizens with contempt is hardly a shocker. Frankly especially in Ireland where members of the establishment can rest easy in the knowledge that they will never ever be held responsible for their actions.
Left wing politicians are as pure as the driven snow, just ask any eastern European person and they’ll confirm this.
These days there’s a difference between left wing politics and communist tyranny but don’t let that stand in the way of your rubbish..
Right, this time it is different. Only good on the left, only bad on the right?

wasn’t his first taste of pie, in fairnesss
Standing at the end of the red carpet to greet Trump when Trump flew in to inspect his “small potatoes” investment in Doonbeg Golf Club, Co Clare. A buttock clenching embarrassment.
These guys all end up with the faces they deserve. Karma of sorts.
Had we been suffering a famine in 2011 when they were elected on the premise of “a fairer way”, they would have been indifferent to watching us discretely perish, as long as the outside world gets the right impression. That’s FG.
