A Foxhole Prayer

Digging out and chucking away foxes in Waterford.

John Fitzgerald writes:

The video above  shows hunters in County Waterford tormenting an injured fox that they have dug out of the frozen ground, and then throwing the animal into the air. The fox lands in the snow and hobbles away.

The video is accompanied by a photo showing the smiling hunters triumphantly holding up the bloodied fox and a terrier used in the dig-out.

Comments posted underneath the footage by the culprits gloat about the cruelty and promise more to come.

How sad, that there is apparently no respite for Ireland’s persecuted wildlife

Foxes struggling to survive in the harsh conditions – desperately seeking food, water and shelter – had to contend with these so-called “sportspeople.”

The worst aspect of this incident is that the digging out of foxes that go to ground during a hunt is NOT illegal.

Attempts to have the practice banned under the Animal Welfare Bill in 2013 failed, with a majority of TDs voting to retain this despicable practice.

Hopefully the next challenge to its legality will succeed and An Madra Rua will receive some measure of protection, in fair weather and foul.

Barbaric stuff. One would think such hunts, or the other large ones that stampede through farmland causing untold damage, would have no place in a developed society.

Hard to know how, or why, pro fox hunt groups have sway over the government. Shooting deer which are abundant, have no natural predators and provide food is one thing……..digging a fox out of a hole in the ground for “sport” is something else entirely.

The disregard of the government, and pretty much all previous governments, for the eradication of our wildlife and habitats is very upsetting. I only hope it’s not too late to reverse the trend. At least the badger culls, which were at best of questionable efficacy, have been halted.

It’s really hard to understand why people would willingly inflict harm on animals. What possible thrill or kick could they get out of it?

exactly, what part of you needs to be missing to throw an injured creature in the air ?
I have mixed feelings about hunting but there’s a big difference between a clean kill and torture.
If the current laws leave a possibility for this they need changed.

Country people are weird, they marry their cousins so your bound to get a more than a few chromosomal anomaly’s.

And yet, many of us inbred country folk know about apostrophes and spelling so we can avoid city mouse anomaly’s :)

I’m not a fan of foxes. I think they are largely vermin, especially in cities. But that’s no excuse for wanton cruelty.

I heard recently that many farmers are pressurised in local communities to allow hunts on their lands and they would face social consequences if they refused, which means an awful lot in rural communities.

May these fox “hunters” be gored by boars in the belly and die slow, painful deaths, every one of them.

Odd isn’t it? Any time I pass a hunt on the road the horn on my car tends to go off for a few seconds longer than usual.

I’m no great fan of hunts but that is not cool. Horses are easily spooked. Digging out foxes is dirty pool, mind.

This is not part of hunting
Maybe the files should be sent to the various groups like ISPCA so they can stop this barbaric crime
I know many in the hunts in England in Suffolk where we lived and this never happened
Disgusting unjustified sadistic torture by low life’s that should be exposed and named and shamed

We are the most intelligent species on the planet, so claims us. There are times when I wonder.
