A Limerick A Day

at

Muldoon’s is among three pubs in Donconrath, County Meath to close on Good Friday

In Drumconrath the publicans think
That we should have a day without drink
The new law they’ve opposed
But while the pub’s closed
Will they serve with a nod and a wink?

well while they’re down at Mass feeling smug about their next life, the other pubs in the area will be cleaning up nicely in this one.

      That’s a bit mean-spirited.

I am happier than most that the Good Friday restriction has been lifted (Easter is one of the times Ireland I come back to Ireland each year, and it’s a pain in the bum that everything is closed on one of the days), but if someone feels like closing their pub for a day, for whatever reason, that’s their prerogative.

it totally is their prerogative. I’m just burnt out on anything even slightly religiously influenced, what with everything going on these days.

Well perhaps, but it’s their call, isn’t it? I mean, just because opening Good Friday was legalised, doesn’t make it mandatory.

In the same way, when the anti-choicers came around last week, I told them that legalising abortion won’t make it mandatory either. Despite what they seemed to be thinking. Soros wants to kill all the babies or something. Spare me.

This. I don’t think our laws should be based on religious holidays.
It is correct that the Good Friday ban has been removed from law.

As an aside, if any publican chooses to stay closed – good for them. They should be free to close whenever they wish.

No. The entomology of ‘holiday’ may be ‘holy day’.

But the meaning has changed and evolved over time. e.g. “School holidays” aren’t “school holy days”.

The study of insects is being banned on holidays now as well?!

is there anyone you don’t try to bully ?
Or is that the point of your name ?
            anyone is fair game ?
            it’s boring
            pick a new name
            try another angle
            make an effort

@GOS: I don’t know how familiar you are with pubs in Drumconrath but they’re rarely packed on any Friday afternoon, absent a big race meeting. Still, you got the mandatory dig in at those poor, superstitious rubes and that’s what’s really important on Broadsheet.

Is it? Hang on, I’ve been laughing at myself all these years? DAMMIT.
To be honest I do laugh at myself, but in a “OOOOOOH HOO, you’re gas,” way.

The line that publicans never take a day off except for Good Friday and Christmas day is total BS.

Its the Friday of a bank holiday weekend. Pubs are DEAD anyway.

There will be a bit of messiness in city centres this year as idiots go wild on the idea of being allowed drink; but next year there’ll be quiet pubs like any other Friday of a bank holiday. And the house parties will be dead

Total alcohol consumption for the weekend nationally is going to go down, can’t see any other outcome
