A number of leading medics have this morning stated that the 8th Amendment is causing unacceptable risk to women in Ireland, and have appealed for its removal so that doctors can provide adequate healthcare to their patients.

Drs Rhona Mahony, Mark Murphy and Susan Smith addressed a press conference in Dublin this morning, which was organised by the Together For Yes campaign.

Guest speaker at the event, Dr Rhona Mahony, consultant in foetal medicine, said:

“The result of the 8th Amendment is that women are forced to travel to another jurisdiction in very complex medical situations, but also increasingly women are taking the matter into their own hands and we now have a backstreet abortion in Ireland through access of pills secured via the internet and taken without any support or intervention. Something has to change because the 8th Amendment creates unacceptable clinical risk to women.”

It’s easy to be a pro-choice doctor once you’ve decided that a human foetus has no right to life.

Not so easy to ignore direct experience of how the 8th amendment affects a medical professionals ability to do their job to the best of their ability and with the best duty of care to their patient.

No. I meant what I wrote.

Patient. The woman carrying the child comes first. Unless we want another Savita on our hands, or another case like that woman on life support.

In those cases the women involved weren’t treated as a patient. They were treated as a vessel and the 8th amendment is why. It muddies what should be clear.

It’s easy to be pro-life newsjustin, when you’ll never have a crisis pregnancy.

(Disclaimer: I’m assuming you are a bloke here)

Strange how the eighth amendment is stopping doctors providing proper medical care to pregnant women ?
The reality is the women not getting the care because of the eight is ones looking for an abortion .
They are getting all but the abortion they want
Meanwhile the clock ticks and the government seem to be in disarray with murmours from coveney
His concerns are based on something

Are these people on a register somewhere pregnant women can consult before choosing a doctor?

People need to know whether their healthcare professionals view them as importantly as an embryo.

If you’re agreeable News, we could start a first on Broadsheet…call it a Broadsheet commenter pairing arrangement.. I was going to vote for repeal and I understand you would be voting against, so if you are unable to cast your vote that day, I will agree to abstain from voting.

I hope that the repeal side are not so arrogant as to waste such an opportunity to affect change after so many years of campaigning for it. If it doesn’t pass, I’m afraid we may have many more years before we have another chance.

I’ve been encouraging as many people as I know to vote, and almost all of them have said they’re voting yes.

          Thanks Italia.

I’m only messing. I’ll be here alright. Voting to keep the recognition of the right to life of the unborn in the constitution.

Well Doctors and nurses For versus Doctors and Nurses Against is more relevant than Candlestick makers and computer nerds For and candlestick makers and computer nerds Against.

It must be nice knowing you’re casting a better class of vote, though, even if it’s only one.
