I don’t think posters are the best use of this money.
I have found that there is a general misunderstanding of the question being asked by many who are being informed through media and the information required to set this straight won’t fit on a poster.
I don’t have the solution, but radio, web and leaflets I imagine would be better value / higher impact per euro.

      1. Cian

        There is a balance.
If all the posters are for one side it can give the impression that the other side doesn’t care.
But yes – perhaps some of it could be spent on other media.

    1. mildred st. meadowlark

      Oh you’re right of course.

Because nobody would dare donate money to a cause they believe in.

      Get a grip.

      1. david

Yep 64 next week and voting no
We now see the repeal mob are as gaybo said one for everyone in the audience
They have not learnt buying votes backfires

        1. Cu Cullan

Even if you think abortion is wrong how can you not vote to remove this from the constitution. It does nothing but harm. It does not stop abortion just makes difficult situations worse.

          1. ReproBertie (SCU)

He’s already said that he’ll be voting No even though it means more women will die so he cleary has no compassion.

    2. Pluto

Classsssiccc – the anti-choice can get funding from the Survivalist Fundamentalist Religious Far Right – that’s ok.

Pro-Choice side get donations from actual voting humans in Ireland and they’re Soros’ bots..

nice lil tidbit of Anti-Semitism thrown in with your argument

      1. The Ghost of Starina

absolutely. Any reference to “Soros” is a dog-whistle reference to “Jews”

        1. Sentient Won

Broadsheet up to its old tricks again: “moderating” opinions, characters and historical truths it finds inconvenient to its agenda, allowing baseless accusations to stand and denying a right of reply.

          Censorship is how fascism begins.

Shame on you and your toxic agenda.

          1. Listrade

Technically fascism begins with the fallout from WW1, Bolshevik Revolution and probably gained most traction through Acerbo Law (at least in power). But I can see the close analogy to that and having your comments moderated on the internet.

          2. Sentient Won

Listrade, fascism never goes away, it just changes its spots:

“Perhaps most damning of all is the liberal infatuation with eugenics, which has simply been whitewashed out of existence. Like the editors of the old Soviet encyclopedias who would send out updates to instruct which pages should be torn out, American liberalism has repeatedly censored and rewritten its own history so that the “bad guys” were always conservatives and the good guys always liberals. This revisionism plays a role in our bioethical debates today: liberals still have a soft spot for certain types of eugenics, but they are as blind to their current attraction as they are to their historical one.”

I think there must have been a big donation of US religious right talking points that they need to use up. Apparently there was a posting at the weekend darkly warning that if we got rid of the 8th amendment the 2nd amendment was sure to be next.

        1. DeSelby

How come so many right wing loons, that (almost) never posted before, emerge from the woodwork at every abortion article?

          Asking for a friend.

    3. TheRealJane

      I am indeed.

I’m also delighted to find that I’m part of the overlap in the Venn diagram between “Sorosbots” and “snowflake”.

This is a good day for me.

  1. Eoin

If you’re so weak in your convictions on this to be influenced by posters and adverts at this late stage then you probably shouldn’t even vote.

    1. well

The entire country and social media are plastered in stuff from the otherside, do you think they wont vote?

      1. shitferbrains

Irish people don’t like the feeling of being harassed. Anti-posters could well have a negative effect on general public. As could pro advertising btw. Repealers should back off a little.

        1. well

“Repealers should back off a little.”

Yeah repealers are really annoying people standing outside schools with photos of miscarriages and presenting fake nurses on billboards. …oh wait…

        2. Nigel

That’s great advice! Hey do us a favour and don’t mention this to the No side? I can’t wait to see the look on their faces when they work it out!

          1. ReproBertie (SCU)

“Repeal have no posters up! They’ve already lost!”

“Repeal are putting up posters and voters hate that.”

  2. Dhaughton99

I saw a No poster on College Green this morn saying ‘babies are going to die’. Well Dah!

    1. ReproBertie (SCU)

In any referendum the question will always be “Do you want to make this change?” so Yes will always be change and No will always be stay as we are.

  3. newsjustin

Great. Maybe now Together for Yes could pay someone for an afternoon’s work in responding to that Prime Time questionnaire on their finances.

  4. JIMMYJAMES

10K ON POSTERS, THE OTHER 90 FOR A DEPOSIT ON THE CAMPAIGNS STARTER GAFF

SINCE REPEAL IS A DONE DEAL

BUT WHATEVER MAKE U FEEL GOOD

    1. Daisy Chainsaw

Yup. Gives you an idea of the kind of dollars backing antichoice poster campaigns.

        1. edalicious

Just read somewhere that half the money is going on posters and the other half is for everything else: leaflet drops, flyers, social media ads, door to door canvassing, etc. Presumably they’re just using posters as a tangible metric so people have a good idea of the amount of promo material they can get with different amounts of money.

  5. BobbyJ

Thanks for posting Broadsheet. Wasn’t aware of the crowdfunding drive. Happy to make my donation

  6. Liam Deliverance

It’s disappointing that an important and far reaching issue such as this can be bought . I have my opinion , I’m fairly settled on it and don’t need posters or street hawkers trying to convince me otherwise. For those that are actually going to vote and are undecided can they not do the research themselves instead of letting unscrupulous groups give them their opinion. This is not the populist circus of a General Election and it’s corresponding shallowness, it’s much more important than that. Electioneering should have been banned, a referendum commission could have been used to inform voters of the issue.

    1. ReproBertie (SCU)

A referendum commission will inform voters of the issue. What’s wrong with people participating in the democratic process by campaigning for their desired result?

I don’t think donating for posters counts as a referendum being bought.

  7. Iwerzon

Yaaay! Well done. Now, get some fuppin posters up. I have family members who have changed their minds to No. Yes need to get their finger out. A poster with a pic of a distressed woman getting on a boat with a shoebox would be a powerful image. Before the smartarses start, please don’t, I’m not in the mood today.

  8. Iwerzon

By the way, Together for Yes posters “Sometimes private matters need public support” are very lame to be honest. You need to call in the big marketing guns with a real message because this is too important.

        1. Daisy Chainsaw

Join the “rebellion” where, unlike any other rebellion in history, we’re fighting to maintain the oppressive, hypocritical status quo.

    1. postmanpat

I don’t think poster campaigns on either side is going to sway the outcome. I recon 24% of the population, the regular church attendant part of the country will be out in droves voting a hard ‘No’. 56% of the country are ‘tick the box on the census, get the kids baptized’ Catholics but don’t go to mass. They ultimately wont have the guts to vote one way or the other. That leaves a 20% at best trying for a ‘Yes’. It might be close but in the end we are going to see a 55% No / 45% Yes from a 44% turnout on the day. It sucks but be prepared to be disappointed.

      1. Brother Barnabas

how do you reconcile that against fact that 1992 abortion referendum turnout was almost 70%?

        1. postmanpat

Because I’m talking about the expected turnout of a 2018 referendum. Not another 1992 referendum. 92% of the population identified as Catholics back then and a lot more were the church going, ‘no’ to abortion kind. Also the referendum was held on the same date as the 1992 general election. so yeah I still expect a 44% turnout this time. Based on todays à-la-carte conflicted Catholics staying out of it. Reconciled enough for you?

  9. eric cartman

repeal : ” the pro life side are taking money from American backers and thats evil interference”
also repeal : “American friends, Amnesty, other foreign interests, lend us your shekels for posters”

    1. newsjustin

Colm O’Gorman has just said, at the launch of Amnesty’s campaign, that the disputed/illegal money was for a repeal the 8th campaign, but not specifically this repeal the 8th campaign. So it’s totally fine that the Minister for Health is there to launch it.

      1. ahjayzis

I’d be happy to ban all foreign money.

But until then, with “LIFE CRISIS IN IRELAND” stuff I’ve seen in the past, thank you Mr. Soros.

    2. The Ghost of Starina

if you went to donate you’ll see they specifically ask you to tick a box saying that you’re a citizen or permanent resident of Ireland.

And the shekels reference is more dog-whistle anti-semitism. nice try, bro.

      1. eric cartman

dog whistle anti semitism, do you just spin a wheel and it makes up buzz words for you, come off it , you have completely invented that out of nowhere.

  10. rotide

    WHAT?

150,000 snots to buy 15k posters? Are they getting them made out of gold leaf?

There’s surely something wrong with these numbers

    1. dhaughton99

Its now “We need to raise at least €250,000 this week to fight for Yes: to print and put up 25,000 posters all across Ireland”

      A tenner a poster? Really?

Does the price include the removal of the cable ties when its all over?
