I think there was a tax exemption for stage/performance clothes in Sweden at the time, but the clothes had to be very obviously not everyday wear, resulting in the groups above as well as Abba’s crazy costumes.

        don’t knock ’em
        still going afaik

they made a great living doing the Irish Clubs up and down the UK
        and were serious grafters too

one of my time capsule entries is Gina singing the Banks on an Up-For-Match gig in the RDS with the lad from Highways and Byways. Before RTE took it over and shagged it up

btw Tweed were actually a very good band, not really Showband at all

The graft of the Showbands and the Country’n’Irish performers has my utmost respect. They work damn hard and they entertain people and there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s just not my preferred style of music.

That website is really fascinating and is clearly a labour of love. It does well to capture a different time in Ireland; one many have forgotten or perhaps never knew existed.

Show band = Cover band, that hadn’t an original song between them. This is where Louis Walsh’s love of tacky karaoke came from of course.

Jaysus, could you imagine the shenanigans if Zulu were still at it today.

The outrage from the broadsheet thread alone would power Mullingar for a year.

Funny you should mention Mullingar. A couple of years back I was in a pub in a neighbouring village. It had a Golliwog on display.
