I think there was a tax exemption for stage/performance clothes in Sweden at the time, but the clothes had to be very obviously not everyday wear, resulting in the groups above as well as Abba’s crazy costumes.

The graft of the Showbands and the Country’n’Irish performers has my utmost respect. They work damn hard and they entertain people and there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s just not my preferred style of music.
