The nets at St Paul’s GAA Club in Lurgan, Craigavon, Northern Ireland
UUP MLA Doug Beattie had hit out at St Paul’s Gaelic Football Club for changing their netting to “depict the Irish Tricolour” and in doing so “marking out territory”.
The club has now defended their new nets, re-iterating that they – along with the club’s new stand – are in keeping with the club’s colours.

Awkward own-goal, re: allowing parity of esteem in the north east of Ireland. This, from the “moderate” and “middle-ground” UUP…

The UK is a funny place. Any news about the “color” of GAA goal nets in New York?
Fleg talk. Must be a ballache living in that angry place.
Excuse my ignorance, I’m a foreigner. What is *squints* “parity of esteem”?
Treating varying cultures equally.
If a football team in NI had red/white/blue goal nets the UUP would never complain and neither would SF/SDLP; but the second a tricolour appears anywhere and the UUP/DUP start crying for mummy.
Protestants in NI are believed to be a minority since earlier this year based on ONS inter-census estimates and almost certainly will be at the next census so they are getting ever more vicious and nasty to try and hold on to cultural superiority. Now, being a minority doesn’t mean that NI has a nationalist majority by any means – there’s a sizeable middle ground on both sides, a decent number of the Catholics are Polish etc so are unlikely to have any affiliation, and a growing No Religion number that could be either side.
cheers Cian.
i also know Protestants from NI who live and work in Dublin and couldn’t care less about unionism.
:-( there are too many “Cian”s here.
We need to resolve this. I’d suggest pistols at dawn… but I’m not a morning person.
pistols at midday. preferably after starters so you’re not hungry but before the main course, so you’re not sleepy.
Pistols at the crack of noon.
The thing is, though, that the other Cian is #PullingACian.
SF would most definitely kick up a riot if red, white and blue nets were installed. Inflammatory party that thrives on stirring the pot wherever possible.
Seems obviously intentional compared to the old nets.
It does match their kit:

Flags are just tacky and increasingly they’re everywhere either for a local GAA game for provincial rugby.
You could do this in the Republic and no one would bat an eye but it wouldn’t be any less weird or tacky.
Until all sides up North get their finger out and get the Northern Irish Assembly up and running again, none of them should be allowed use the term MLA or be given any column inches or talk time in the media.
Shocker! UK unionist Irishman complains about anything depicting the geographical realities of his situation and that not all his neighbours have the same worldview…in other news, sky is blue and night follows day…
