well, that’s one opinion.

The more I think of the sheer, cold calculation and the utter callousness of the FG hack the madder I become. Offer a dieing woman a big, juicy carrot – I.e. fast tracked, no fault settlement of her legal action, in exchange for covering the arses of FG, and Emma had the courage to refuse it! What a fantastic woman – firstly to refuse, secondly to publicize the facts. We are in her debt.
realPolithicks
Its absolutely disgusting and now they’re trying to claim it was some low level guy who took it upon himself to make the offer. Don’t believe a word of it, its the very kind of thing this government would do.

Hi
What is the (legal or otherwise) position on people wearing badges or jumpers showing their support for one position or another at work?….
Last Thursday a woman was sent home from work because she was wearing a Repeal sweater. The company then sent a memo to all staff saying that no symbols should be worn & (disturbingly for me) no discussion whatsoever should be had about the issue in the workplace.
More details on request
rotide
Was the woman client facing? Was she sent home to get a change of jumper or just sent home
Robert
Yeah that’s fair enough. The workplace is no place for contentious political issues, regardless of your stance.
mildred st. meadowlark
I think fair enough with regard to the repeal jumpers, No badges etc but no discussion of the subject? They don’t get to decide what you speak about. That’s a bit far. They are your employers not your keepers.
Robert
I don’t think this is necessarily an employer-imposed rule, more a matter of etiquette. You have to work with your colleagues next week regardless of the result and fiery disagreements rarely make for a happy workplace. Better to just avoid IMHO.
Topsy
That was clever of the cops to the kill the abduction suspect.
anne
Kidnapper produced a knife & Garda shoots him dead in the head…might as well have shot the girl. They haven’t a hope of finding her now.
Fupping idiots.
ReproBertie (SCU)
Were you there Anne? Saw the whole thing did you?
martco
I know speculation, wait lets hear the whole story & the armed response unit have a good reputation etc. @Repro but the fella was armed with a stanley knife. a stanley knife. now unless he somehow had one of the detectives in a headlock & was was about to cut him open this was a very large unfortunate outcome
martco
sure the regular lads in England take down drunken loopers every weekend with Tazers ffs
Repro-choice Bertie
Repeated studies with LEOs in the US have shown that the minimum safe distance for an officer with a holstered weapon facing an assailant armed with a knife, even a concealed knife, is 21 feet. We, as yet, have no idea what the circumstances leading up to the shooting were. Obviously this was far from an ideal outcome but real life is not like TV.

You can almost hear the collective refrain “why didn’t he just shoot him in the leg?”

Honestly, that’s what I was thinking too.

Armed Response Unit have been around for a good few years now and have made a lot of gangland arrests, some thwarting attempted assassination attempts.
They are very Nell trained and have no reputation for being trigger happy and I doubt that was the case here. So best not make any such assumptions.

I think its safe to assume they’re trigger happy when they shoot a guy armed only with a knife, clowns.
Repro-choice Bertie
Even this question makes a bunch of assumptions about what happened but do you think they should just have let him stab them?
postmanpat
Sorry, you’re absolutely right, I forget a knife can be mistaken for a gun especially if you’re scared. All the police training in the world cant help of your a coward, like all bullies are, deep down. Its not like the victim had any important information the police could have used anyway.
Repro-choice Bertie
You reckon the detectives who had been searching for this man specifically to ask him about Jastine decided to ignore the reason they were searching for him and just shot him for the craic?

sorry, harry, but are you seriously suggesting the armed response unit might know more about how to deal with these situations than resident know-it-all anne?
Nigel
Until further information emerges I’m going to assume the bulk of the blame lies with the kidnapper who pulled a knife on an armed Guard. This isn’t America. Whatever their faults our police don’t have a rep for being trigger happy.
dav
IMHO, they aimed for the arm, hit it and I’d say the 2nd shot hit the same area, unfortunately the man was probably falling from the 1st shot and his head took the bullet that was intended for his head.
Harry Molloy
The reason law enforcement generally don’t aim for limbs is that the bullet can ricochet and go anywhere, often doing pinball inside the body. The target may do better by taking a direct torso hit.
Banm
No mention of the ARU being the shooter. Local detectives. Some papers reporting ‘five shots’ as he threatened to kill himself

anyone know what the deal with Tazers are in this country?
why doesn’t every Guard carry one??

God help the general public if gardai were allowed carry tazers. We have seen the incompetence, lies, lies and more lies from all levels of our national police force over the last number of years. Tazers – never.

If a detective had died at the scene , we would all be asking ‘Why didn’t he shoot the feicer?’.
None of like murdered garda despite inadequacy in the force.
John McGuirk busy making a total botty of himself again.
I hope he gets as much airtime as he can handle this week, will ensure an easy Yes win.
Brilliant piece by Ursula Halligan on Saturday. Church’s absolutist position has more to do with gender apartheid than the rights of the foetus.
