“I need to buy a pineapple, I think I’ll park in the middle of O Connell St”

Would Leverett & Frye or Findlaters not have had pineapples for delivery to the servants’ entrance?
Terry Wogan’s dad was general manager of L&F, by the way.

james caulfield,1st lord charlemont famously built a heated garden at marino house to grow exotic fruits such as pineapples in the 1780s. apparently.

Exactly – So he wouldn’t have popped into O’Connell[1] Street to buy one.

            [1] or even Sackville Street

All they had to do was get rid of the statue of Nelson, not the bloody pillar!

For god’s sake, have Dublin City Council never heard of Oscar Wilde’s “Happy Prince” it would have been a fitting replacement with its theme of love, generosity, compassion and sacrifice for the greater good.

Naturally the usual suspects would have shouted “We can’t have a statue of a prince in a republic”…. but then I never met a republican who told his infant daughter not to read Cinderella or not to dream of meeting Prince Charming.

The Spire sucks, rebuild the pillar….

Calm down Louis, it was only a pillar.

I’m not sure why you are talking about Dublin City Council, ’twas the RA that blew up the pillar.

Oscar Wilde’s gayness might have prevented his Prince being erected to the Column’s summit in 1960s Ireland, no matter how happy he was (but it is a beautiful story)
They’d have been more likely to swap Nelson out with St. JFK or perhaps P. Pearse (although his inability to be represented in any attitude other than profile might have defeated the statue-makers)

The population has also changed. From 795,000 in 1966 to 1,345,000 50 years later.

‘Progress’ after 32 years of FF-led governments and 20 years of FG-led governments.

After all the bickering around the referendum, I find reading a post from Dav sniping at the blushirts strangely comforting.
