Bishop of Elphin Kevin Doran
“What I’d say to a Catholic who voted Yes is this, if you voted Yes knowing and intending that abortion would be the outcome then you should consider coming to confession…
…Ultimately all sin, and sin is not just related to this area, but all sin is about decisions that impact on our relationship with God.”
Catholics who voted Yes should consider confession, says Bishop (irish Times)

I actually laughed out loud at this one. These guys are like the proverbial chicken with its head cut off, they are dead but haven’t realized it yet.
2,000 years. 2,000.
Whats your point?
Indeed. They’ll refocus, head south and leech off another developing nation. Invest hard in schools and hospitals and insidiously infect the hearts and minds of a male able population. One looking to drag themselves out of some form or oppression or rebuild after a civil war. They’ll buy their way in and leave a trail of devastation in their wake. It’ll take them generations to realise what happened and generations more to do something about it. It’s what they’ve done for centuries and once the flock is many, they won’t care where they come from. They’re a busted flush up here.
Like those Aliens in Independence Day
2000 years too long
Bodger, why was my comment from last night deleted? All I did was question why someone who voted Yes would need to go to confession.
According to Catholic rules, procuring or having an abortion is a sin but there is no mention of voting to give others the right to make their own decisions. Otherwise, why didn’t the good bishop not come out and say that before the referendum?
He appears to be a bit of a loose cannon anyways.
SOQ, i didn’t delete your comment. You’ll have to take it up with Chompsky.
Bishop, respectfully, fupp off.
I’m not a sinner
so tis all the one t’me
but if anyone want absolution
I’ll put together some Latin from my school days for ye
So tell me your sins
now that’s some frilly pants!!
I LOVE IT!!
Meh
I dunno
Tisn’t me tbh
But I’ll leave it for the moment
Temporary Installation
Kinda
Frilly, I just googled and here’s some Latin for you to use when penitents visit you:
“Vade, et jam amplius noli peccare.” [google for translation.]
G’wan now an’ stop all that sinning
n’stuff
that had me tortured here listen t’ya
Latin ta’ Frilly translation btw
Wi’ annuder bit
For a bitta garnish like
Sounds like something you’d hear from the pulpit in 1918 rather than 2018
Cant fault him. Internal logic checks out. Cue Catholic guilt and long game social engineering. Church always has a 4D chess back up plan.
except no one is swallowing the sin anymore
if you do believe in God I would hope it’s a more loving kind
Church who facilitated the rape of countless children should consider finally fupping off, says Irish public..
says you, but you should probably not take liberties in speaking for others.
The power gauntlet has moved on…that is, if you are concerned about power.
“Catholics who did not heed our moral guidance should now heed our moral guidance and seek redemption from the people whose moral guidance they ignored”
God bless
who have not a moral leg to stand on
Be fair, they’ve backed down from the nuclear option of excommunication. A week or so from now, a quick decade of the rosary said at home will expunge the Yes sin.
My understanding is that procuring or facilitating an abortion means a Catholic has excommunicated themselves. Until recently only bishops (I think) could lift the excommunication. Pope Francis temporarily gave that facility to all priests for the Year of Mercy and I think it’s still in place. So a good confession will sort out a repentant Yes voter.
I suspect there may be more repentant Yes voters in years to come, as the stats mount up, as happened in Britain.
Here’s the thing though, nobody cares.
Yet someone invited him on the radio and this website is obsessed with the things he says.
how is this website obsessed?
Google:
“Kevin Doran” site:www.broadsheet.ie
yeah, it’s a bit like pointing out the fat kid guzzling smarties sometimes but still, religious nutters are always good for a laff. doesn’t have to be your lot either, the DUP are great as well..
+1
The only person “obsessed” with this topic is you.
“The only person “obsessed” with this topic is you.”
I know that I’m interested in the topic. But I don’t publish anything. You’re the one who claims nobody cares….but here we both are.
“I know that I’m interested in the topic. But I don’t publish anything. You’re the one who claims nobody cares….but here we both are.”
“Interested” as I post this comment there are 58 comments on this thread, you’ve contributed 14 of then, obsessed is the word I’d use for your contributions.
You absolute potatoe. Stats mounting up will just show how we have be outsourcing OUR problem and that we should have be dealing with these cases at home since 1983.
Muppet.
Calm down, none of that inappropriate language.
Potatoes are great. Are you even Irish?!?
I’m Irish and potatoes are from South America.
Why would you think that..? Take Tuam for instance, how many actual babies were left to starve to death and then dumped in a sceptic tank. How many RCs are even remotely interested or feel anything at all about it..
There was nothing sceptic about that tank. The whole shebang was septic. Toxic.
Yep. Every Yes vote supports every abortion. Facilitating an abortion is a grave sin for Catholics. It is appropriate for the Bishop to remind Catholics (everyone else can happily ignore it) that sins can and should be confessed.
And for the priest who buggered my godfather for 5 years, what about him?
What sort of punishment does he deserve?
Let he without sin and all that, and as far as I can see the Catholic Church are the last folks to be casting judgement.
Jail (and treatment to reduce the risk of reoffending).
He’s also (of course) committed a foul and vile sin against your godfather and, without God’s mercy, will go to hell for all eternity.
A new parish with some fresh kids…. these ones have started asking questions.
oh aye it’s to be expected. But it doesn’t deserve media coverage except maybe as a “and finally” comedy story.
Yeah
But ya see
Even though most of the Catholics are dying off
Those ye do get inta Mass
Are still getting the same show
ye’re still at the fear and scare and ye are all sinners going to hell
So give us your money to ask God
Or whoever
To be nice and forgiving etc
Seriously,
Can ye not shake it up a bit
Like a bitta Tap Dancing
Or a Cookery demonstration
Or Flower arranging
Stuff like that
are you trying to rob the real tenants of the Prods, flower arranging, baking, choirs and coffee mornings ( lots of cream) ?
Is that what they’re at Janie
Ok, so as not to mimic the left footers
How about
Line dancing, Bingo, Karaoke
That last one would be great for the hymns TBF like
Any good?
if you want to draw in the cool kids, you’ll need something like karate or video games
and a bit of sex never hurt
the games up
we can’t fight karaoke
+ real sherry for all at communion
or a nice port
used to always offer to “wash up ” after as a kid
straight down the sink any extra glasses..no messing, oh yes
I was wondering if there would be a post on this. I’m from a Church of Ireland background, so maybe look at it from a remove. But I am still amazed that anyone can say this or believe it. Where in the Bible is confession and absolution via a priest alluded to?
If you believe in the Christian version of God, your ‘sins’ are between you and him; the priest’s involvement is just another method of keeping tabs, and sway, over the faithful.
hear hear
god doesn’t need a priest telephone if indeed he exists
Get away with that.
Next you’ll be saying that all the seven sacraments are makey-uppy too!
D’ya know Cian
Ya have me tinking
I might have a run at those meself
Doll them up a bit like
Now, I’m no theologian, but:
John 20:23
If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”
Yes, but isn’t he correct, If you are a Catholic and want to partake of the sacraments, don’t you have to play by their rules?
The catholic heirarchy and clergy don’t play by their rules. I suppose they’re leading by example!!
Read the room, dude.
Ill be emailing the archbishop of Dublin this week to confess my mortal sin of knowing a woman who had a termination and not stopping it. I will request that he does the only thing he can do and excommunicate me from the rcc.
On a side note, I’ll be having an excommunication party this summer, all welcome, bring cans
Just to be clear, you know excommunication doesn’t mean getting kicked out, yeah? It doesn’t undo your baptism.
Just to be clear, people like me who were indoctrinated into the rcc cult as children but have as adults seen through the hypocrisy that lies at the heart of it don’t give a fupp about “excommunication” or “baptism” or any of the other rituals of this failed cult. So whether you try to pretend that people like me are catholic just so you can make up the numbers doesn’t alter the facts.
Why would I want to do that? You’re not a Catholic. I assume you told the last census that.
Whatever sacraments you received in the past are between you and the church – and maybe your parents. I don’t see your problem here.
The problem is they still report you as a loyal member of their flock to the Vatican. They still claim you as a Catholic even though you may say you are no longer a member. Maybe they are even receiving funding based on your membership even though you want nothing more to do with them. They don’t provide a way to leave and reason being if they did people would be leaving in tens of thousands in this country alone.
“Maybe they are even receiving funding based on your membership.”
Are they?
You know exactly what the problem is, you simply refuse to acknowledge it.
@newsjustin I don’t know but it wouldn’t surprise me. In any case there is a problem if they are reporting you as a Catholic and you aren’t. Isn’t lying a sin? Or else are they saying you can’t leave?
The church has been hijacked by a bunch of nasty, small minded, pure evil unchristian fuppers. Of all the commandments there are but two – honour your god, and to thine own self be true. Rather than smashing statues we are just letting them wither on the vine of life..
What have the Romans ever done for us!
Just to be clear, I don’t care! I’ve already taken care of that in so far as I can. If th church has these “laws” on their books then I think they should be compelled to use them
You certainly come across as someone who doesn’t care about this.
Just to be clear, newsjustin is not a Catholic and it is mere coincidence that it appears to be his specialist subject.
What do you mean? I’ve always told anyone who asks on here that I’m a Catholic.
Actually no, you have maintained on the abortion debate that you were not.
Now it is too nice a day to be sitting here digging up your previous posts and more importantly, this friggen grass won’t cut itself.
in the interests of fairness, i asked him directly a couple of weeks ago- and he confirmed in response that he is
I’d obviously have issues with newsjustin’s beliefs, but not with his integrity or genuineness
i see him as a victim who has been cruelly abused and exploited, who wanders now lost and forlorn in a treacherous land. hopefully one day he can find salvation.
“Actually no, you have maintained on the abortion debate that you were not.”
You’re 100% wrong SOQ. I have never, nor would I ever deny that I’m a Catholic. You won’t dig out proof of that because you can’t.
I’ve said before that I don’t use religious arguments against abortion because a) there are so many humanust and scienfific arguments against it and b) people have a range of religions and none.
You joined a mental club, that mental club has mental rules. Mental? Mental.
Gays, abortion, women. It’s not for them.
OK sure I’ll give it a go.
*Walks into Confessional*
ME: Howaya Brigid
Priest: Don’t call me that when I’m working.
ME: Oh! Get her…..
ME: Anyways, Bless me Father for I have sinned, It’s 44 years since my last confession
*Gets list out. Starts at top of page one of 74*
Tongue in cheek I know but, the thing is, if you do that, no matter if it’s 744 pages, you’ll be forgiven.
would it be a sin to refer to a bishop as a hateful, loathsome cn ut on an online comment forum?
Why do you feel the need to be “forgiven” by an organisation who clearly only give a fupp about themselves?
I don’t need to be forgiven by an organisation.
So can I be forgiven by God through prayer? If i said prayers specifically for sins I felt I had committed would I not need any interaction wit the Church?
That organisation should be begging for forgiveness from the Irish people not not the other way around…begging on the knees they love to see others on.
It’s good to know we don’t have to resist the church any more. Eejits like the bishop above are helping them on their way to self-implosion.
but i voted yes. will it change anything if I sit in a dark box with a priest and say sorry? He has to forgive me, then my soul will be guaranteed entry to Heaven.
on a serious note an unborn child cannot be baptised according to the rules of the Catholic church and a still born baby can’t be baptised either, therefore the Catholic Church has absolute contempt for religious couples who lose a child during pregnancy.
unfuppinbelievable.
Life begins at contraception. An abortion at any stage is murdering a fully formed baby.
No we won’t baptise your stillborn baby cause it’s not a baby for some reason that we haven’t had time to make up yet.
What about the babies they starved to death in Tuam and every other ‘home’.. at what point did they have a soul..? If only we had a Roman Catholic fupper to ask.. oh, where could we find one..!!
The RCC is an evil institution, and I don’t use that word lightly. They have not only facilitated the rape and abuse of children but covered up these crimes as they see their moral judgement as higher than us lowly sinners with our inconvenient and irrelevant courts of law. That they are still maintaining moral superiority on any matter, let alone this, is laughable.
…I’ve just checked with the hierarchy and all you sinners are welcome in the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster – bless her noodley appendages…
…ps…ordinations are currently being held for new priests…bring your own colander…
…lapsed Jedi particularly welcome…
Pastafarianim is the one true church…. On yer knees folks and pray;
Our pasta, who art in a colander, draining be your noodles.
Thy noodle come, Thy sauce be yum, on top some grated Parmesan.
Give us this day, our garlic bread, …and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trample on our lawns. And lead us not into vegetarianism, but deliver us some pizza, for thine is the meatball, the noodle, and the sauce, forever and ever.
R’amen.

couldn’t resist I have an OCD for facts my Topsy troll
Very sound. Well worth a read.
Apropos of the subject of this one, the ad on my mobile features a psychedelic Jesus worrying about his CAO.
I love how non-Catholics on here seem to think he’s talking to them….
*eyeroll*
You need to go outside again, for a bit. Your replying to all comments is reminding me of that guy who went proper cuckoo in the comments when the papers were posted. I miss him/her (him). That was almost art.
….pffft! :)
Sex and Relationships Education in England is under consultation. I am glad to see that the Church of England is offering sensible suggestions about what teachers could be teaching to young teenagers. Among other matters, teachers should advise school students that ‘abstinence and celibacy are positive options’. I think C of E experts should urgently be sent to advise our Department of Education about this sort of thing. It is time to be sensible, is it not? It is more edifying than rolling condoms onto bananas and other gimmickry.

Is the Church of England actually a religion. Don’t think so.
Poor fella has been watching too much Father Ted.
The beard would suggest he has been playing close attention to the subsequent career of Father Noel Furlong
The ballot box was the confessional where we washed away our sins.

What the feck has it got to do with you then Fader
Teaching the Catholic faith and recommending/providing the sacraments to Catholics is like 110% of what he does. The wilful misunderstanding of this is remarkable. If you’re not a Catholic and/or not interested, you need not even listen.
“Teaching the Catholic faith and recommending/providing the sacraments to Catholics is like 110% of what he does.”
If only that was what they did…. but no….

How long is it since your last confession
An’ tell us your sins there Dinny
Make ’em good uns now
he’s right, of course.
ahem, BroadSheeple.ie…I’m seeing the same sort of mindset that gave power to the church in the first place. This place needs some trolls to lighten the place up a bit.
What the opportunistic conversion of a Roman emperor to an obscure monotheistic religion fom a troublesome corner of a declining empire?
Trolls are a form of censorship, nothing more.
+ poison and negativity spreaders
There isn’t much said about parents forcing their daughters to have their babies in mother and baby homes. It was grandparents approaching the church for help, “what will the neighbours think” type of attitude .Had they given a flying fig the welfare of the unwanted baby would not have ended up in a septic tank.
As for our politicians, it’s not that long ago that they allowed the file of Fr Brendan Smyth gather dust in DPP’s office for over 3 years in Dublin when police in Northern Ireland had warrants for his arrest.
