Garda uniforms always look like they’re designed for the more obesogenic end of the force. Other police forces go for something a little more dynamic. It would be interesting to see a comparison of police uniforms around the world.

A Polo shirt? I think the ngards need sorting out but that’s cruel and unusual punishment.

I imagine the type of get up that monks wear would be far more striking – you could embroider the slogan Robes of Justice on the back in big gold letters and hide all kinds of crimefighting gear in roomy pockets inside

There was a case in England recently where Surrey Constabulary finally sacked its most unfit, desk-bound, overweight officer – and she took the case before the Employment Tribunal on the basis of unlawful discrimination on grounds of disability, gender, failure to make reasonable adjustments and victimisation.

Her occupation, weight and persistent absenteeism led to her colleagues nicknaming her “Blue Moon”.

She lost the case, mercifully enough.
