Don”t Look Down

at

This afternoon.

Grafton Street, Dublin 2.

Sauvingon Blanc writes:

The song says “ Grafton Street’s a wonderland ..there’s magic in the air”. Sadly the magic has disappeared, and has been replaced with a thick coating of dirt and grime.

What are Dublin City Council doing about it ? Absolutely nothing. Have they even got a machine for cleaning streets?

It’s the height of the tourist season ..10,000 people an hour walk down Grafton Street. Heads should roll because of the inaction of the Council. Please write to them at customerservices@dublincity.ie

Dublin in the summer is dirty. Dublin at any time of the year is dirty. Dublin is dirty.

    1. Janet, I ate my Avatar

It’s not dirty relatively speaking as a capital
I have seen much much worse
except why do grown adults think it’s ok to put the dirty feet on opposite train and bus cushions ???…now that’s dirty

      1. Termagant

What if I take my shoes off? I swear my socks are clean, I only changed them last week

      2. Ollie Cromwell

There’s a reason Dublin is called Dumpland.
When you’re tired of stepping over vomit and urine puddles you can always count the needles.

        1. Bernie

Ollie Cromwell, you get the same in most capital cities, the council can’t keep on top of the cleaning the whole time. London’s the same, what’s your point and why are you still here?

  2. Ina.

There’s nothing that can be done about it. They used the wrong stone. If they clean it today, it’ll be dirty by the end of the week.

    1. Alors

In France, shopkeepers scrub the pavement in front of their shops every morning. Not in Dublin, though.

      1. Ina.

Grafton street’s too wide a street. That happens in provincial France, but not on the Champs Elysee.

        1. Alors

It happens in Paris too – not on the Champs Élysées, but Grafton Street is no Chancy Lizzie. It’s kind of a matter of pride – by cleaning the pavement in front of your shop industriously, you show that you’re the proprietor. By the same token, the street markets that are ubiquitous in Paris are not independent stallholders as in Moore Street – instead, each shop puts out a stall on the street on the market days (usually twice a week, sometimes more) with goods for sale.

In fact, in Paris water is run through the gutters and along the borders of the streets every morning and evening to clear away any rubbish. http://www.secretsofparis.com/heathers-secret-blog/water-flowing-in-the-gutters-of-paris.html

          1. Janet, I ate my Avatar

we ain’t been to the same Paris
It’s the army street cleaners who clean up not the residents or shop keepers or market stall holders

      2. Lush

No idea where you live in France but it certainly doesn’t happen in Bordeaux.
        Janet, anything to add?

        1. Janet, I ate my Avatar

Everyone drops everything at their arse in Paris
sure we pay taxes for it to be cleaned n’est pas..

          1. Janet, I ate my Avatar

and shop keepers are doing you a favour to serve you….unless you are a regular ( then it’s love forever )
never mind clean the street hahahahah

        2. Rob

Not sure if it still happens, but when I lived there residents used to bring their dogs out for the morning dump, just before the cleaners arrived, so they wouldn’t have to deal with it.

        3. Andyourpointiswhatexactly?

Hey Lush! I was there recently. Beautiful: I really loved it. But very stormy: we were there that day the crops were ruined.
Funnily enough, I did see a few shopowners sweeping and washing the paths outside their businesses and thought that I hadn’t seen that in a very long time.

      1. Rob_G

I don’t know – what would you prefer DCC spend their money on: housing the homeless, or endless Sisyphean scrubbing of light grey stone in an effort to keep it clean?

          1. Rob_G

Well, sure it’s possible. Which of the taxes that you pay would like increased, or which services that you access would you like to cut in order to pay for it?

    2. The Dude

Nothing can be done about it?

Why not fire the civil servants responsible for choosing and approving the one material they were supposed to ensure to get right?

Such systematic inaccountability is exactly what is wrong and rotten at the core of the Irish state.

      1. Bob

The government chickened out and failed to bring in measures to restrict or ban chewing gum in 2005 which would have helped.

        1. Rob_G

Even the chemical composition of our igneous rocks is superior… Isn’t it great being Irish, all the same?

  3. Andy

Alternatively, the store owners could clean the street outside their units?

A bit of civic pride was never bad for business.

  4. Frilly Keane

It”s being quite the day for Punctuation domination
An” losing the run of itself
    Hasn”t it

    1. Dinny Do Well?

Correct. Though the rabblement will get the gist.

Us Grammar Nazis are so Anti-Semantic, huh?

  5. Gockdaw

Could you be overreacting just a little? Decapitations because the streets are a bit unsightly?

  6. Yep

and people are expected to sleep on that? Disgraceful.

And sure when was the last time you saw gold dust in a lady’s hair down there? Huh?

To the dogs I tell Ye.

  7. Dinny Do Well?

    That’s Joycean grime. Leave it.

But can they clean up the littering of apostrophes instead?

    White Lines Don”t Do It.

  8. Bernie

For anyone that was interested in the so-called Belfast rugby rape case, Spotlight, tonight on BBC1 NI, conducts an experiment to find out what people understand by consent. Should be interesting.

      1. Harry Molloy

one of my homes is in Dublin, should I go to my holiday home? I plan on being there for August anyway, my French has been getting rusty

        1. Sheik Yahbouti

Any one of your ‘homes’ will do, Harry – you are no longer even faintly amusing.

          1. Harry Molloy

not trying to be pal, you’re being aggressive to someone on the internet, no need for that. troll.

  9. Custo

It’s been like that ever since they relaid it a few years ago. Made a hames of it.

I was coming from the airport yesterday and the taxi through the North City from Dorset St through Grangegorman / smithfield and the quays – my god Dublin is a scruffy, dirty, bet down looking kip.

    1. Sheik Yahbouti

I notice that my previous heartfelt plea to other posters to return to the little slices of Paradise from whence they came, and leave Dublin to us natives, mysteriously disappeared. Strange days indeed – a Dubliner cannot even venture an opinion, in Dublin.

        1. Sheik Yahbouti

All the time, Frillser, me proud beauty – but my remark is valid. My earlier post WAS deleted. As for ‘Harry’ below, I’m not even going to bother.

          1. Harry Molloy

            but you did bother :-)

that sentiment doesn’t come from nowhere, upsetting as it is for me I am now questioning your sincerity. I mean, I’d hate to think you were an asshole

          2. Sheik Yahbouti

Oh, I suppose I’ll have to ;-/ It is a matter of debate, ‘Harry’ as to who is the greater asshole – that is for others to decide. Ne’re mind, the World Cup starts on Thursday so you won’t hear from me for a month :-D

  10. Sheik Yahbouti

Go home to the wonderful slice of Paradise you hail from, and leave this poo-y City to the people who were born there. Then you will have nothing whatever to complain of.

      1. Frilly Keane

Those time stamps seem ta” suggest t”was there all along

        Ya silly oul’ fart ya

        1. Bernie

To be fair to him Frilly, it wasn’t there earlier, when he was saying it wasn’t there, it wasn’t.

          1. Frilly Keane

The silly oul” fart must be in quarantine so

Or maybe I”m the silly oul'” fart
            It happens

          2. Bernie

Neither of yous are silly aul farts, whichever moderator/dictator was on last night, got a bit overzealous ;-)

  11. Jake38

The Shinner Lord Mayor is too busy bearing fraternal greetings to Hamas etc in Gaza to bother with stuff like this.

  12. Reidman

Wrong stone, government/public procurement model, lowest price wins, this is what you get, it was filthy as soon as it opened.

  13. Rois

Weren’t they supposed to seal it when it was done to prevent it getting this dirty? Also, are the side streets going to be redone?
