This actually seems to be an acceptable grammatical form https://data.grammarbook.com/blog/apostrophes/apostrophes-with-names-ending-in-s-ch-or-z/
“Yeats’ day” is problematic as that apostrophe form signifies a plural of yeatses.
Perhaps the most grammatically correct form is “Yeatses” but that seems a bit silly as well …
Personally I’d just go for “Yeats Day” but then I’d be accused of vanishing the apsotrophe
But the heading on the sign is definitely wrong. It’s not Yeat’s Day.
It might be Yeats’ Day, or Yeats Day or Yeatses Day, but not Yeat’s Day.
You have your rules a bit confused there, Robert. “Yeat’s Day” is just wrong because his name is not “Yate”. If you want to go for a possessive, it’s either “Yeats’ Day” or “Yeats’s Day”. “Yeatses” implies that there is more than one Yeats.
Like you though, I prefer”Yeats Day” without the possessive.
Robert. “Yeat’s Day” is just wrong because his name is not “Yate”.
Well yeah, I would have thought so, but if you follow the link I posted it seems as though it’s allowed.
That said, I’m not saying that site is accredited or anything – it was just the first result on google …
Private Eye solved a similar conundrum by changing the name of regular reader correspondence feature “Pedant’s Corner” to “Ped’ants Corner”.
“if you follow the link I posted it seems as though it’s allowed”
it actually doesn’t
> it actually doesn’t
It actually does – but the explanation is unclear.
And I may be wrong but you’re an ignorant thick.
you’ve read it wrong – but let’s not quarrel, I know you’re busy (that adult literacy course won’t fail itself)
then there’s this exhortation down in Sligo, which may or may not be gramatically correct, but it’s awful, either way…

Fairly schite sign all round really
fumbling in the greasy till, eh?
this isn’t the big baps post again is it ?
only if you make it so
Was it something y’ate?
Why hasn’t anyone noticed that they got the day of the week wrong initially or are we just being pedants on the use of an apostrophe?
To Err is human …
To Arrrr is pirate.
The stink around Sandymount is fierce. Together with the incinerator, there’s panic everytime the Irish Times Thursday Residential Property Porn comes out. Good enough for them. Yeats was humourless, he suits the area. And as for Bloomsday and those gobdaws on their bone-shaker bikes, pissed on claret….
Hah I thought at first SAMRA FUN DAY was a mangling of SAMHRADH.
How I chortled…
You’re gonna have to take a punt on it…

As it happens, Yeats himself was a terrible speller.
As it happens
So am I
