More than 2,000 volunteers will take to the streets for Barnardos National Collection Day.

Barnardos children’s charity works with more than 17,700 children and families each year and have over 550 families waiting for a service around the country.

Barnardos spoke to children in the run up to the National Collection Day to see what is important to them – they spoke about their home, school, family and friends…

The Dun Laoghaire Christmas Festival runs between November 30-January 1 and includes a ‘Santa Hat world record’ attempt for Barnardo’s on December 21.

The current record stands at 872 santa hat wearers (assembled in America in 2010) which doesn’t sound completely unbeatable, in fairness. Enrolments here.

The charity took the move because of repeated cuts to its budget over the past number of years, which have resulted in a reduction of its statutory income.The charity also says it is experiencing a decline in donations.
