Invited to fill a 2000m³ exhibition space for the 10th anniversary of the National Art Centre of Tokyo, French architect Emmannuelle Moureaux chose to create Forest Of Numbers – a suspended, 3 dimensional kaeidoscopic grid arranged in ten  multicoloured layers, each representing a digit from 0 to 9.

She has form in this regard.

Games theory and maths Puzzle boffin Presh Talwalkar shows how to multiply any two numbers just by drawing lines.

The origins of the technique may be Vedic or Japanese. No-one seems too sure.

Presh offers a fuller explanation of the method here.
