Coming in relatively late are some of the highlights of recent on Dublin alternative radio station Dublin Digital Radio. Since kicking off late last year, the station has attempted to bring different voices and sounds to the Irish radio landscape, with shows recorded live in Jigsaw in Dublin, and pre-taped around the country.

Writes collective member Brian Hyland:

The Dublin Digital Radio roster expanded again this week as we launched some new shows including Off Target and Soft Landing Radio, making their debuts on the digital airwaves.

Among our top selections this week were, The Co-Present where host Dwayne Woods caught up with Steven Sharpe and Maija Sofia. Next was One-CP which had SUED label head, SVN in the house before his Dublin gig, well worth a listen. Last but not least, Beneath the Bricks with Breen gave us another stellar mix last Sunday.

Listen live or on-demand here.

Our now-weekly check-in with Dublin Digital Radio brings with it another eclectic selection of on-demand auditory treats and a packed weekend schedule (see above), ahead of the station hitting the road this weekend.

Writes DDR member Brian:

Week 16 has been good and busy for us here at DDR, with plenty of new shows starting and preparations for our first festival appearance at Quarter Block Party well underway.

Some highlights of the past week (embedded above) include Underneath The Orange Tree with host James Rogers and Graham Dundon bringing soulful grooves and afrobeats to the DDR Studio. Check out their first record, dropping soon. ELLLL continues her fine form following the release of her Romance EP with an hour and a half of tough beats, atmospheric techno and bass while Brian Coney of The Thin Air delivered his weekly mixed bag of oddities for his show Death Culture Blues.

Looking ahead to the weekend we are broadcasting from Cork City on Saturday with interviews, live performances and a bit of messin’ in Plugd Records from 2-6pm (your writer included – Mike), before we take over Gulpd Café to play records from 9pm-12am. On Sunday, Shivers radio returns from 5-8pm and Aidan Hanratty brings the ambient and drone vibes from 8-10pm.

Listen here, live or on-demand.

For the weekend ahead some show highlights to keep an eye out for include the Wino Boys’ show “Wah Wah Wadio” on Saturday. While on Sunday we have a new show called “Mullin’ it Over: Obama: A Retrospective” which takes a look back at the highs and lows of his presidency. At 8pm Major Problems boss Barry Redsetta is back on the airwaves, which is not to be missed!

Dublin Digital Radio, as mentioned in our radio overview a few months back, has been hard at work forging a genuine alternative for the nation’s airwaves, from its HQ at the Jigsaw arts centre in Dublin.

As they prepare for their twelfth week on the airwaves, they’ve given us a few choice cuts from the last week to share, embedded above.

Writes DDR’s Sean Finnan of the shows, embedded above:

Here at Dublin Digital Radio we’re celebrating our twelfth week on the digital waves. Since our initial broadcast we have expanded to over 50 residents and we aim to keep expanding, to become the go to platform for alternative music in Ireland while all the while being a community run station.

Some of our highlights for the past week include Little Gem’s Indie Hour featuring the best of the Irish underground, Breen McNamara’s Beneath The Bricks, a fortnightly exploration of anything from forgotten African sounds to ambient soundscapes and Emma Cawley’s feature on the Dark Entries Record Label.

Listen in live, and see the weekend schedule.
